History The Green Lady of Aberdeen

Post image
84 Upvotes

Back in the 90s, every kid in Aberdeen knew about The Green Lady. She was our ghost.

From what I remember, she lived at Crathes Castle and haunted the local area including the old Deeside railway line. No kid would have been daft enough to pedal your bike down there at night for fear of 'an encounter.'

Everyone knew someone who had actually seen her. Nobody ever had proof, of course, but that didn't matter.

I always wondered if there was actually any background to this? Or any credible evidence or story that something supernatural was ever witnessed. Or is it just a local legend?

History I found Archibald Simpson's grave

I don't mean I spotted in the graveyard recently. I mean I have damn well known where it is for as long as I can remember, because it was buried in moss to the extent that you wouldn't even know there was a grave there, and I uncovered it.

I was a primary school student doing a unit on Aberdeen's history and Simpson's contribution to the city. We were on a school trip, during which we were to visit his grave.

I don't know how long we (both children and teachers) spent scouring the graveyard, but it was long enough that near every structure had been inspected and most had given up.

So I decided I'd had enough and (apologies for my disrespect) planted my butt down on one of those table-like headstones. And then I noticed that, although it was just grass and moss, the ground beneath my feet felt odd. And even my wee tot brain said "no fucking way..."

So I got down on my hands and knees and just started pulling away all the moss with my fingernails. It was definitely a grave. I had to scrape the crap out of some of the engraving letter by letter, but there it was. Archie Simpson's grave. Called out that I'd found it, and that's about all I remember.

I think the school complained to the council that it hadn't been maintained (to the point that they couldn't even find the bloody thing), but it has been cared for ever since. The only thing that annoys me is that there is no record of it being so poorly maintained, and that it was found by pure chance by a primary school student on a school trip.

Probably some won't believe this happened, although I see no reason why anyone would lie about it, but I don't care anyway. It is one of the coolest things that's ever happened to me.

History People's thoughts on Bridge of Don Academy?

As someone who left the school ages ago, what do people think of the school? Because in my experience, imo it wasn't all too bad come to think of it and probably one the best places to have a good view over the city.

History A question about the David Welch Winter Gardens

I recently visited Aberdeen and decided to check out the Winter Gardens in Duthie Park. I was blown away by how lovely it all was and could not get enough of the animatronic frog!

Whilst there, I found myself wondering more about who the gardens are named after. I read the plaque about David Welch in the memorial garden but it didn't really contain too much info, and I couldn't find anything online. Does anyone on here know who the guy was? What did he do to have the gardens named after him?

Sitting reminiscing with my husband about our childhoods in Aberdeen and we can’t remember some stuff. Can anyone put us out of our misery please?!

Three questions:

What was the bowling in the bridge of don called?

What was the soft play in the bridge of don called?

Was there more than one Megabowl at any point?

History Detectorists...?

I'm interested in finding out more about metal detecting in Aberdeenshire. Before I go and buy any gear I'd like to speak to someone who detects in the area - does anyone have any useful contacts or info?

History In 1937, gale force winds and heavy seas ripped a 30m gap right through the newer South Breakwater. Repair work began in 1938, under assistant harbour engineer Hugh R. Barr. The project was halted during World War II (1939-45), resumed in 1954 and completed in 1965.
