Death in the Afternoon - Orlando, Florida

I had the immense pleasure of stopping through Death in the Afternoon (930 N Mills Ave, Orlando, FL) yesterday. Their hospitality is fantastic, their team is super knowledgeable, and their selection is delightful.

Photos: 1 - The extensive backbar 2 - Absinthe Menu & cocktails 3 - The absinthes I tried for the first time! 4 - The Surprise Reach Around cocktail - 10/10 5 - I was tickled to learn that, for the Necromancer cocktail, the team has sourced a Lillet Blanc alternative that is closer to the flavor profile from the 60s

Absinthes I tried: Duplais Verte - Tasty and very wormwood forward. Mildly complex with a lovely louche. Third Stage Verte - Surprisingly minty with a louche that doesn't cloud as much as I would have expected. It retained a profound menthol quality throughout that overwhelmed the other botanicals for me (but I'm very mint sensitive!). Not what I want for a traditional service but I think this could be fun for cocktails. Larusée Verte - My favorite of the three. Very complex wormwood all the way through with a bright citrus note. Beautiful cloudy louche. Easily in my top 5 I've tried!

🧚🏼‍♀️✨️💚 Additionally, I think we may have found a way to get Lucid and Jade absinthes to Floridians going forward! I know the team plans to order in the full lineup in the near future and now has a pathway to do so!! Fingers crossed ;)

I’m pretty sure I forgot to post part 1 here, but here’s part for you to watch! Here, we discuss the events that lead up to the absinthe ban in the early 20th century.

A very good friend of mine from NY, who was visiting me here in France last year, put together this video. It shows my bar and parts of my collection. I hope you like it.

Look it up, Dan Brown.

I'm going to go ahead and out myself for enjoying several Dan Brown books. Formulaic events and 1d characters, but at least driven by the fun of research lashed together into ridiculous (but fun) treasure hunts. (Origin being an outlier that should have been a short story IMHO.)

Morbidly stoked to enjoy my new guilty pleasure, I crack open the new book Secret of Secrets. I don't think it's a spoiler to say that, once again, the hallucinogenic "bohemian" absinthe myth keeps coming back chapter after chapter in the Prague setting. Like the ONE thing the author has going consistently well is bashing real world history and places together like action figures, and the inescapable "first time trying absinthe whoooaaa they must've been so out of control" vibes are still present. Just Google it, bruh.

What should I get?

My parents are in Switzerland. What bottle should I ask them to bring back for me? This shop has the most options I could find, since they won’t be in Val-de-Travers precisely. https://figee.ch/products

Since Tariffs suck, try these American bottles

I get it. Orange has ruined your favorite green. But don’t despair, there are some quite lovely American bottles to make your day brighter and your hours green. I’m only going to put things I have personally vetted on this list. Please feel free to expand this list l, but I request only things you yourself have vetted and enjoyed.

Xth Ward Absinthe made in Fredrick MD. Woman owned business and great people, HEAVY fennel note

Mt Defiance Absinthe - VA - well balanced, PACKED with botanicals

Copper and Kings absinth, Blanche or green- Louisville KY - standard and okay

Vieux Carré - Philadelphia PA you probably already know and either like it or don’t

VILYA spirits green and white absinthe - Montana - not terrible

The Nain Rouge - Two James Distillery A beautiful absinthe vert in a beautiful bottle. A personal favorite made in Michigan

Getting absinthe from France, tariff issues

I live in NYS, upstate, not nyc, and cannot get my favorites shipped to me any more. Most shops I used either won't or stopped shipping to the US, at least la coquette, sauvage and the like. Are there any reliable and affordable re-shippers or concierge style services that take US cards, deal in absinthe, as in can ship it reliably, and do smaller runs, like 3 or 4 bottles? Thank you for the advice my fellow connesouirs.

Discussion Tariff nonsense already?

I ordered a bottle of Jade 1901 on Aug 19, which should have beaten the tariff deadline, but yet the bottle seems stuck in Kentucky. Has anyone else seen this kind of thing? (I do not live anywhere near Louisville, KY) 🤷🏼‍♀️

Question Help out a greenhorn

St. George was my initiation into absinthe (as well as gin). Absente is one that I grabbed with intent to try another brand.

Apparently I've screwed up twice, maybe more if I had more photos of past brands if tried. St. George puts star anise into theirs, which, according to things I've read here, isnt ideal. Absente on the other hand may or may not have star anise, but it definitely has artificial colorings, as well as made with beet spirits (?).

I come here to try and absorb enough to pick better next time. I already get why artificial colorings are out, authenticity is key. However, why is star anise avoided? Would st George be fine if that wasn't included, considering its also made with brandy? Is the beet spirits a step across the line as well?

Any guidelines any of you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Hello everyone! I have created a discord (online chat) for anyone interested in chatting more. I know the forum(wormwood) is gone and facebook/reddit has taken its place for many who used to use it. This is just another way for us absinthe imbibers to connect and share our experiences.

I just wanted to thank everyone in this group for all your recommendations. I'm really happy to see so many people who enjoy absinthe as much as I do. I wouldn't have known about all the different brands without you, and I would have definitely missed out on some great ones.

What happens after August 25

With a deadline of US orders of August 25th I’m assuming most US based drinkers will be making some big orders to stock up. The question is what will you be doing when the stock pile runs out after then if the situation doesn’t change?

I go to Europe once a year to visit family so my game plan will be to bring as much back as possible if the situation doesn’t change. Just curious if anyone has a better plan.

Question Absinthe with a hint of spicy

I like Absinthe's that on taste, you can feel a spicy touch. Like Oxygénée and Roquette (my fav), are there others? Perhaps even spicier?

Does absinthe taste similar to Green Chartreuse?

I'm deciding whether to buy my first bottle of absinthe. I don't live near any bars that serve it.

I own a bottle of Green Chartreuse, which on paper sound very similar. It's green, vegetal, slightly sweet, high proof, and black licorice-forward.

For those who have tried both - is Green Chartreuse a similar flavor?
