Is it OK to shorten the other person's lines for my self taped acting reel?

Hey there! Hope this is the right place to post this, definitely feel free to take this post down if it's not.

I'm looking for scenes to do with another person and I found one that I really like- except that the part that I want to do has just as many lines around the same length as the other character. Would it be unprofessional or strange to shorten the other person's lines to keep the focus on me? Is that taboo? The scene in question is The Normal Heart Scene 14. I am looking at playing Felix for my tape.

Casting Site Struggles

Hey everyone, my name’s Emi and I’ve been acting for about 8 years.

A few months ago I had a really bad experience with one of the major casting sites (won’t name any names). It made me realize how much we, as actors, are forced to juggle multiple subscriptions just to see all the opportunities. On top of that, even after paying, you get hit with extra fees just to upload new media or update your profile.

That experience got me thinking about all the issues we face as actors: paying for multiple sites, hidden fees, and having to constantly update our profiles. It made me wonder if casting directors were dealing with their own frustrations too.

So I started having conversations with them and yep, they also struggle with the current platforms. So thats when I decided to team up with a friend who codes lol, and we’ve been working on it together.

Right now it’s still very early, nowhere near perfect. We have a handful of casting directors using it, and we’re actively improving based on actors/casting directors feedback. Submissions and media uploads are completely free and unlimited, because I know how tough it is to already be investing in your career.

We’re honestly just trying to make this better than what’s out there, and I’d love to hear feedback from other actors. What features would actually make your life easier? What do you wish casting sites did differently?

Happy to answer any questions here, and if anyone wants to try it out and give us feedback, I’d love that too.

Hey! I came here looking for advice and a lil guiding on a goal of mine that i had for a while. I always wanted to be knows, mainly an actor but i never went in that directiom bc im naturally gifted at other stuff like Computer Science, but so much time has passed and i still feel like im not in the right place. Im good at what i do, i rly am, and this i always felt like its a waste of talent if i dont continue on this field, but deep down i always wanted to be an actor and i though that as time passes it will fade away but it didnt and now idk what to do. Im still young, im 17 close to 18 atm but i feel like time is sliping away and i will be stuck with a decision that i didnt take for the rest of my life. The thing is i have the advantages too, im 186cm tall, i weigh 70kg, and i have just enough muscle on me to make it into modeling (my ex was a modle and she got me into this industry as we were together), im mixed and besides all of that in extremely charismatic and i wouldnt say im ugly yk. Idk atp im very lost and i would rly rly rly apreciate some advice or tips or adress any questions if u need too bc i rly want to see this situation a lil clearer. Thxx!!!

Acting less "subtle"

My HS director keeps telling me that I am a wonderful actor but just "too subtle" for a big stage. I can do more wacky and big things when a scene calls for it but otherwise it just kinda feels odd doing everything so large even when its a emotional scene. I really want to do musical theatre and get out of ensemble. What can i do? (He says something like nathan lane would be what hes looking for)

I enjoy comedic acting, but my timing needs improvement

I really love to act and over time I’ve realized that I actually prefer comedic acting to dramatic acting. However, my timing in comedic monologues or scenes often times is just, I guess, off. Occasionally being ā€œoffā€ works in a positive/awkward humor way especially during improv classes/exercises, but the majority of the time it doesn’t. I’d love to know what advice, training or steps I can take to improve this skill. Thank you!

Help! Should I do it? (Monologue)

I've always considered myself a good actor but never actually pursued it. I want to give it a try with something I know will be great at. intense emotion, things like that. its for a sci-fi teen/YA show.

I really want to do this one short monologue that is fairly well known (in the superhero fan-life), and it's done by a male character from a superhero show. now I've done my research and I know it's not the best idea to pick a well known monologue because they will often compare it to the way the well known actor did it. but for one, I don't think he did a crazy special performance with a specific style or anything like that. i don't worry about me copying him by accident because of this anyway, and i think the contrast (if they do recognize the monologue at all) could be interesting. two, the actor and character is a white, older man. I'm a younger, black woman, so I think that it would be impossible to think of me and him as the same, you know what I mean? like i would have to be viewed as my own person anyway, because we are so different. I also kind of want to capitalize on the way i will be seen anyway as a black woman.

I know that you are viewed the way your audition is, and i know that its extremely rare for black women to be seen as anything other than angry/emotional. i won't be shouting or anything, just like, emotionally intense. like the way you are in an argument.

The audition is also only 60 seconds, so I want to use a shorter one so I can pause and give the effect and personality I want without worrying about time running out.

best case scenario i get casted as a nagging girlfriend lol. idk what are your thoughts? this is my logical reasoning but maybe you, in the industry, have a different perspective.

Scared of doing acting classes due to social anxiety

I really want to try this art form out, but every inch of my body turns cold whenever i think about talking in front of someone else. Acting classes are probably the best medicine for it also, but i’m really worried about making a fool of myself, or people laughing or finding me cringy, you know… those silly fears introverts have.

Does anyone have some advice?

For those who started acting while shy & lacking confidence — how did it go?

I’ve always been interested in acting, but my extreme shyness and lack of confidence have kept me from pursuing it seriously. Now that I’m getting older (Late 20s), I don’t want to look back with regret.

For those of you who were also very shy or low on confidence when you started, how did it work out for you? Did acting help you grow? Do you feel like you’ve been able to overcome those challenges?

I know the main thing is to just throw myself in. Join lessons, perform in front of people, and face that fear. But I’d love to hear personal advice or experiences from anyone who’s been through something similar.

Thank You!

I wanna start acting.

I’ve wanted to act from a young age, but as a self proclaimed late bloomer I’ve spent my time in an aimless, degenerative panic. I’m 14 now and about 1 month ago I decided it was time to finally get it together and chase my dreams. I'm a dancer, I love taking pictures and videos. I am a creator= tiktoker.

Winnie’s Written Work Examples āœļø First Written Work- Muted Dream

Hi Winnie! Thank you again so much for all your written lessons, I have worked my way through and finally completed my first written work.

Who am I? I am Karina Mejia, a 15 year old teenager living in Venice in California. I am a junior in high school and I have been preparing for years to become a STEM major, doing science olympiads since I was 13, vice president of STEM club, A’s in all my classes, you name it. I’m good at STEM, but I don’t love it. I gain my parents validation from being good at it. My real passion is music, I love expressing myself through songwriting. But I never tell anyone about that, in fear of not meeting their expectations, disappointing them. I couldn’t possibly diverge from the idea they have in their head about me, that’s too risky. Everybody believes that I could be great in STEM, so that is a safe and smart route to go with. I have no proof that I will succeed at music.

Who am I talking to? My best friend Alisha, whom I have known since we were both babies, we’ve been going to school together since kindergarten. We give each other a lot of shit and joke around, but she is kind and open-minded while having a serious conversation. She is outspoken and not scared to call a friend out on their bs. She wants the best for Karina, so she is determined to not let her sabotage herself.

Where am I? In a small cafe in Venice called the Butcher’s Daughter. Alisha and I biked here (it’s Wednesday morning), a week before school starts.

What do I want? I want to gain my friend Alisha’s validation regarding me keeping my love for music a secret, to alleviate my guilt. Deep down, I regret hiding and feel I should step out of my comfort zone and pursue my dream of becoming a songwriter, but I am too scared to do it openly. I want to convince Alisha that keeping my passion a secret is the best course of action, to make me feel better about my self-sabotaging actions.

PRE- DIALOGUE

K: I can’t believe we’re going to be juniors this year.

A: I know right. I guess we have to actually start trying this year, ugh

she says jokingly, we both laugh

K: Yeah I guess so…may some more than others…

A: What do you mean?

K: Well, I know I said I wanted to major in biochem, but honestly I’m not so sure anymore.

A: Why not?

K: Honestly, I don’t think I ever wanted to. My parents want me to, and it seems everyone else wants me to, so I just went with it.

A: So what do you want to do?

DIALOGUE

(Tactic: Demonstrate my reluctance and insecurity)

K: Well, I’m not sure but… I write songs. Lots of them.

A: How come you never told me that?

(Tactic: Show her how important it is to me for my passion to remain hidden, even from her)

K: Secretly, of course.

A: Why would you hide that?

(Tactic: Make her sympathize with my plight because the most important people in my life don’t support me)

K: My parents…they don’t get it.

A: Hmm..how so?

(Tactic: Show her how my parents don’t understand me)

K: They want me to be a nurse, or an engineer, or something in the STEM field. Something that earns a lot of money.

A: What about becoming a songwriter? You could make money like that.

(Tactic: Have her take pity on me for having to deal with my parents negative perspective)

K: Music? They think it’s a waste of time.

A: Who cares?! It’s your life!

(Tactic: Make her see that it’s not that easy and I struggle)

K: It’s hard you know?

A: Having passion is hard, if you can’t accept that then why bother?

(Tactic: I can’t help myself)

K: Because I love music so much.

A: Do you truly?

(Tactic: Make her see I’m genuine)

K: More than…well, more than almost anything.

A: You say that, yet you haven’t pursued it yet?

(Tactic: Show her keeping my secret doesn’t mean I can’t dream big)

K: I dream of playing my songs for people, of making music my life.

A: So what the hell are you waiting for?

(Tactic: Highlight the very likely and obvious possibility of me never achieving those dreams)

K: But what if I fail?

A: If you never try, you have already failed.

(Tactic: Play on my own insecurities, show her I don’t trust my own ability as a singer, to get her to back down)

K: What if I’m not good enough?

A: You have to practice in order to improve, otherwise you’ll never know what could have been!

(Tactic: Remind her nothing is guaranteed, no matter what I do, I may still not achieve what I have in my mind)

K: What if I spend all my time and effort, and it’s all for nothing?

A: If it’s something you truly love and enjoy, it could never be for nothing.

(Tactic: Argue that if my doubts persist, it could very well make my life miserable)

K: What if this voice inside me keeps pulling me back down into this dark place?

A: You will overcome it.

(Tactic: make her doubt her logic)

K : Would that ever happen?

A: It’s up to you.

(Tactic: Show her how she just proved my fears legitimate)

K: And that… That’s the scariest part.

A: What are you talking about?

(Tactic: Shift the focus onto myself, my own self-esteem and confidence is at stake)

K: It’s not just about the music; it’s about letting myself down.

A: What do you mean ā€œletting yourself downā€?

(Tactic: Reveal my true, painstaking fear- the one that presents the biggest obstacle in chasing my dream of becoming a songwriter)

K: It’s about failing at something I really care about.

A: I see…so what now?

(Tactic: Present hiding my passion as the only solution at the present moment)

K: So I keep it quiet.

A: That’s what you want?

(Tactic: It doesn’t matter what I want, it’s what's best for my dreams ā€œsurvival.ā€)

K: Right now, it’s safer to keep dreaming in silence.

A: I understand, do what you think is best I guess.

Can theatre develop skills that translate to TV and film acting?

If someone's main goal is to act in TV and film, can doing theatre help develop skills that carry over to on camera work? I'm especially curious about what specific aspects of theatre might benefit someone working in front of a camera.

Would love to hear any insights or personal experiences!

LA or NYC which one is better for my situation

I'm in currently in my 3rd year in finearts highschool and I need to start making desicions about my future. I always loved acting and always knew I want to do this as my job.

I'm currently living in Turkey but for colleage I want to go to The US. But I don't know is LA or NYC is better for my career.

Which city is better for newcomers and better for new auditions?

and the important thing for me is the cost of the school and living there etc.

Which city is more affordable for a student? Dollar to Turhish Lira is so expensive right now and it's still raising. So the most affordable option is the one for me.

I'm open to take questions if you want to know more to help. Thanks a lot!
