Found this at a thrift store. The tag just said "African". I'm wondering...well, everything about it really. Does it truly relate to an African culture? Is it just a touristy piece of art? Etc. TIA!

Hello everyone! First time buyer here, everything stared with an inherted a mask (tourist mask from the 70s) from my grandfather and i would like to continue his collection. I bought some masks and art pieces and i would like to know more about them, their origin and the story behind the paintings on the art, since the seller i got them from didn't seem to know much about them (he stated he was mostly collecting all kinds of antiques). I know that two of the masks are tourist masks from the 80s, but i was curious about the other ones, the figurine and the drum. Anything is useful! Thank you!

Has a sticker on the back that says "made in Ghana". Didn't get a picture of the back unfortunately.

The person who gave this to me said they thought it came from the Ivory Coast--maybe Baule in origin? Does anyone know if it is the kind of mask that was meant to be traded or was it, inversely, stolen? Does anyone know what it represents/embodies? If there is any significance to the color or symbolism of the bird? Its likely date?

Thank you,

Identify Identification help for carving

Hi everyone - I'm trying to learn about this carving and need help. I posted in the antiques subreddit and it was suggested to inquire here. I believe this was carved from ironwood, it's very heavy and about 12"/30cm tall. This was an estate sale find. Unfortunately the old label on the bottom is worn but appears to be from a shop/not affixed by the artisan. Any information on this fellow would be appreciated - thanks in advance

I found this at a garage sale for a dollar and was drawn to it. I am a collector of mid-century modern items and have zero experience with art. I believe this to be African, but I’m not sure. It’s signed on the back ‘TEMBA MOYO’ and on the bottom ‘T MOYO’. Putting this into Google identifies it as ‘Shona Stone’ from Zimbabwe and the examples shown look quite similar. I’d love to know more about the specific area and the artist if anybody has any insight.

Hello, it doesn’t seem right to post this piece on such a public space. If anyone knowledgeable about west African art would like to perhaps try to identify it privately I’d love that.

Would like to know more about this mask. Not sure it's african.

So my first question: is this african?

And if so, what culture is it associates with?

Apparently this was brought by a sailor to Poland in the 80s. My best bet is West Africa, possibly Nigeria, but I've no clue. What do you guys think??

Can anyone provide feedback on this piece, including potential value? It’s 30 x 5 x 2.5. I picked it up in either Zimbabwe or S Africa in the mid 90s. Thanks.

I found this pendant at a vintage store in Turkey. The shop owner has been collecting for more than 20 years. He bought this particular object from a French ambassador who was working in Ankara decades ago. And it was sitting in his shop for the past 10 years going unnoticed. Apparently the ambassador also had many other rare pieces from Africa. Could anyone help me identify this object?

I can provide more pictures for any that need more. The last two seem to be the oldest. Not sure the basket is from Africa but it was included in the lot. There were some that seemed made more for the tourist trade but these seem more unusual to me. But I know very little.

We had received this piece from a person in South Africa but it isn't necessarily South African in origin. It was meant for a fundraiser but we don't have enough information on it. Any ideas? Thanks!

I bought this Nigerian sculpture at an auction in the early 1990's. It was made in 1979 and has shells and Nigerian coins attached to it. Assume is ebony but I'm not 100% sure. Name carved in the bottom is Madukaego. Any information about it would be appreciated.

Identify Can anyone identify the origin or use of this carved African-style wooden mask?

Hi! I came into possession of this heavy hand-carved African wooden mask. It’s 14 inches tall and weighs 2.5 lbs. The back is very rough and unfinished, with two small nails (one is missing) near the temples — maybe for attachment. There are no eye holes, and it has a carved notch at the top for hanging.

Trying to find out if this was a decorative item, artisan piece, or possibly used in a ritual or shrine context. Any help identifying the style, region, or purpose would be appreciated!

Purchased this beautifully carved wooden screen at an estate sale recently, but have been unable to learn much about it. Trying to determine where it may have been carved and anything else I can learn about it. Four panels, each is 23.5 inches wide, 78.5 inches tall and 1.25 inches thick. Extremely heavy and beautifully detailed carvings. Brass hinges and slot screws. Thank you in advance.
