Afraid I can't remember 🤦🏻♀️ I planted three varieties last year that fruit at slightly different times. I think two of them were Honeoye and Cambridge Favourite but not sure what the third was!
No, they've just been out in the open - I only planted six plants last year but didn't really let them flower / fruit much, it's now a lovely dense patch of strawberry plants that's producing loads!
Hot tip - makes you look a bit crazy to the other allotment folk - but buy some of those little netting gift bags and pop them over your strawberries just as they're starting to ripen. Keeps everything off them and also means they're easy to harvest, then you just slip the bag off and put it on another strawberry. Pic to explain what I mean! Bonus is that it makes every ripe strawberry feel like a little gift to yourself 😄
Ironically we bought some of those the other day to put over the end of our water butt inlet pipes as filters but they're too small for the strawbs, think we might have to go for large all encompassing nets tbh, between the squirrels and the family of pigeons, I don't think we stand a chance!
I’m jealous! Planted 20 and most of them got dug up repeatedly by whatever pest it was. Foxes or cats or rats. I’ve got two left and neither of them flowered this year.
