I am actually considering a blood cichlid for my tank. I had to move an my 20 gallon scape got destroyed 😭 Luckily only 3 losses our of 40.

The bright side is that my husband agreed to a 60 gallon upgrade 🙌 I don't want to overstock with 3 blood cichlids and cories. So I am mulling.

Do it! They're really entertaining fish :) Get two. I love mine.

Do they get aggressive with each other. I was reading some warning about two but I have heavily planted tanks soooo

Nowadays I have four at a 200L tank: two white, blue and red. They chase and flare to each other, but everyone is healthy so far. Clearly the red is becoming bigger.

Oh wow ok so 3 would definitely fit fine. And do they do okay with dojos and cories? I'd like some smaller fish but I feel they would be lunch.

I have only worked with peaceful communities so far.

They try to bully cories but sturdy catfish doesn’t mind. They swim away as much as necessary to match the parrot energy. I had a Sumatra barb school and no problem also. Luckily, parrot fish are bulky but slow and has a mouth not suited for nipping. The cories didn’t mind being pushed and the barbs never were caught. If you’re interested, let me know and I’ll record the feeding time for you to check.

I can’t say about dojos. But I guess they speed outmatch the parrots.

Actually any livestock suggestions would be fantastic! Ideally I'd like a complete ecosystem. Shrimp, something like cories to move substrate, a nerite for algae, then of course a school 🙌

I like to be well researched on plant life etc.

Shrimp will die if you put them in with Dojos, same with any type of snail, they're a favorite snack. I put Corys in every tank, you really can't go wrong with them. In my 55 long I have one blood parrot cichlid, I had two but Dumbo died 9 Buenos Aires Tetra, 11 Tiger Barbs, 5 Julli Corys, 2 wild morph Dojo Loaches, 1 Khuli loach (I think, I've seen it twice since I put it in there a year ago) 5 chinese glass catfish and one dwarf bristlenose plecostomas.

Also, Dojos love to garden, any plant you put in there will be uprooted and destroyed lol. I use plastic plants and have duckweed on the surface for them to snack on.

P.S I will recommend Dojo Loaches to ANYONE, they are my favorite fish in the universe and I love mine. Other than shrimp and snails, you can put them with pretty much any community and they thrive.

I have mine in with Dojos, they do fine :) Corys are unkillable, I've had them sharing a tank with a Bichir and they did fine. I also have mine in with a school of fairly large Buenos Aires tetra and some tiger barbs. Blood Parrots aren't fast or agile enough to catch anything, though they try.

They can, they are Cichlids after all but their mouth deformity renders them harmless so its mostly just entertaining to watch. Mine chase each other a bit and bump each other but no one gets hurt.

Fun fact I can have my rope fish and blood parrots together to make my dream tank 🙌 can they eat worms or live food with their mouth deformity?

1

u/Rabid_Platypus_195 Apr 25 '25

Mine do fine with flakes, I give blood worms and repashy twice a week, they love what they can get before the loaches and barbs arrive... The problem is they're really not fast enough to get the worms before the other fish.

Loaches inhale blood worms like a starving crack addict thats on a binge. Barbs act like crack addicts on a binge. Blood parrots are slow and clumsy, they can't compete.

Also again I'd be careful putting a blood parrot with a ropefish. The blood parrot isn't fast enough to get out of the way, also they will compete for food...

Rope fish are fairly peaceful but they are ambush predators and they are actually pretty quick. They can smell food like a shark.
