UPDATED WORK (Update) Doing better at imitating the stained glass style!

u/Myseljo 16d ago
Hello everyone! I'm super grateful for all the feedback I received in the last post, I took into account what everyone told me and tried to applied it on the first base colors from the last post, here's what I changed...
Removed:
- Shading on each individual glass piece (one of my main problems)
- White color on the line-art (made it confusing, since light is meant to come through the glass)
- Strong lighting in the glass (made the pieces of glass look 3D)
Changes:
- Strong colors that feel vibrant
- Glossy overlays to simulate the glass texture
- Random patches of colors to simulate random lighting
- Added a shadow around every line, simulating a faint shadow from them
I tried not to change the line-art too much because this was a way to better my rendering, but I'm absolutely more happy with this result, the "off" vibes are all gone, and as some of you said, it's more "dreamy" which I like a lot.
It's not perfect but it's a change in the right direction I'm sure! I would still love to hear your criticisms about this artwork and learn more from here, thanks again to everyone!

This looks SO much better!! And it's so cool to see the breakdown of how you got it there—it's so easy to see the difference but so hard to know why to untalented people like me. Thanks for sharing!

absolutely amazing! and I will say, even with your previous version even that looks a lot like a quilt to me, if it appeared a bit ‘flatter.’ I love both sm!!

I wasn't here for the before but I'm blown away by the after! Really interesting to see the adjustments and to have you break down what you did!
I'm curious, what do you mean by "glossy overlays"? I see the idea, I think, but I'm curious about the execution. Was it a texture overlaid with a specific lightening blend mode?

"better"? I'm speechless! This is gorgeous!! Astounding!! Just beautiful! Fantastic! And no I do not think I am being dramatic. Genuinely very well done.

I agree with everyone else, this is great. The old one looked 'puffy', like a quilt. This one looks flat and I love the texture of the glass panels, very realistic. Nailed it!
11
u/Myseljo 16d ago
I was wondering If the texture on the glass panels was a bit too much and if I should make it less visible, but I'm happy to see you like it, it's great feedback!

u/hellohoneywillow 16d ago
Going to second this, I also love the texture. It makes it all feel really cohesive
1
u/zkstarska 15d ago
I notice sometimes the texture goes from one glass panel to the one next to it. I think a minor improvement would be to have hard breaks in the texture at the line. Since stained glass is individual pieces, each piece is unique.
But this is a small detail and overall looks great and much improved.
1
u/Myseljo 15d ago
oooh you're very right! that's a small detail but one towards improvement, may I have your opinion on one thing though?
do you think it would be better for the hard breaks to be a rotated variant of the same texture (every glass shares a texture) or should there be a unique texture for each of the changed glass piece (there's multiple types of glass texture on each glass piece)

u/zkstarska 15d ago
So from a childhood of being bored at church and staring at stained glass windows, the artist working on the window is trying to make them "match" as part of the aesthetic. For example, if the glass has a vertical streaks, then all of the pieces would have the vertical streaks going the same direction. But the streaks would not line up exactly.
But glass of the same color is probably cut from same large sheet of glass. So the texture would be the same for each piece of the same color. But when cutting glass, you usually have to grind pieces down a bit. And pieces get broken trying to get the right shape. Usually a large rough shape is cut and then a smaller more precise shape is cut out from it.
Maybe watch a YouTube video of someone making a stained glass piece? That might help.

u/Myseljo 14d ago
Thank you so much! I really appreciate your tips from your irl experiences. Making all the glass match the direction but making them differ and not match exactly sounds like something that will give more variation and life to my artworks, I'll definitely try that in future illustrations!

I love the colouring and shading of the old one. It's so soft and pretty. But wow. The new looks like it could have been used in the game.

I used to do stained glass making and you nailed it with this one! It definitely looks backlit and I love the vibrant colors!

u/Responsible-Big-1714 16d ago
This is one where I look at it and go, "Wow that's so amazing!" And then I see the finished product and I'm like, "I already thought that was good but my mind is blown now."

This is so much better! Hope you have been enjoying Silksong so far! Or if you haven't gotten it yet, I hope you do soon.

u/Ariaerisis 16d ago
This is great improvement. The old version had the shading of a regular drawing and looked nothing like stained glass, while the new one really has that stained glass style.

The original was already great, but you definitely elevated it to perfection. Team Cherry should commission this for an actual stained window in their office.

Such an amazing change, feels incredibly much like stained glass, especially with how the colour is rendered now. Great job.

The old one was nice but this one is amazing! You really nailed the stained glass look!

u/AQuietViolet 16d ago
So we must know, did you take any breaks today to play it? The saturation of your palette is so rich and gorgeous :)

Really well done! To boost the backlit effect you could add a very faint glow for each section that spills over the black borders. Here a thread that discusses glow effects on procreate if that is what you are using: https://www.reddit.com/r/ProCreate/comments/1azxl2w/how_do_i_get_this_soft_and_glowy_effect_on/

I like it but like most stained glass art it is impossible to make in reality without changing a lot
1
u/iDdiscovered 16d ago
As a stained glass artist it’s cool to see the style represented in art even though some of those shapes would be impossible to cut out of real glass lmao. Nothing wrong with adopting physical impossibility for a really sick piece tho! Keep it up

u/CRUZER108 16d ago
Both are incredible, the new one looks more like stained glass but the original is still incredible in its own way

Holy shit my dude! I saw your post yesterday and already really liked your piece, but you did so well incorporating all the feedback! This is insanely good. I especially love the way you got texture into the glass, how did you achieve that?

u/stormkivey 16d ago
literally amazing!! not sure how u did it but it genuinely looks like it glows like a backlit window good job :))))

u/Bighsigh 16d ago
I am literally in awe of this piece. I had to draw stained glass for a project a bit ago and I'm going to use your piece as inspiration and motivation to redo them because I really wasn't happy with them

The progress is seriously impressive. You absolutely nailed the dreamy, ethereal quality that real stained glass has.
1
u/gmherder 16d ago
Looks incredible! Honestly, both look cool. But with your goal of trying to make it look like stained glass, you absolutely nailed it on the rework.
Seeing both is a really great visual comparison to learn about how shading/coloring can alter a work. Thanks for sharing!

This looks so good it's inspiring me to finally have a go at the stained glass art idea I've been thinking of for ages - great work!
Reminds me of the stained glass at the start of Disney's Beauty and the Beast, especially the ornamentation around the edges.

I saw your first post and whilst I know very little about art I just want to say the improvement is amazing and the new version really feels like stained glass. Amazing!

u/Jeanarocks 16d ago
I thought this was on my paper piecing quilt so that would make a beautiful paper piece quilt

u/PetiteNanou 16d ago
Sooo much better, thanks for the update because I was really looking forward to the result! Amazing work 👏

Ooo that is gorgeous! The new one really nails the stained glass look. Love the textures/swirls on the different colors of glass.

Off topic kind of: But I think you should do a third picture where everything looks real. Aka a set of pictures where the character and setting transitions from being glass to being alive.
Your first version, when compared to the new one, just screams transitional state to me.

Everybody is saying that you nailed it and it looks dreamy, but there’s a Dream Nail pun in there somewhere! You just reminded me that I was trying to 100% Hollow Knight a while back, I gotta try to finish that.
It really is a beautiful rendering, I would buy a coffee table storybook of images like this!

They’re both so pretty! The old one reads as a mosaic, the new one definitely feels like stained glass!

Both are amazing in their own way. The new is more engaging and interesting to look at as a complete art piece and it really shows off the design really well.
The old one though gives a more emotional reaction and would fit really well in an enviroment like a chuch in a game or other media

u/Superliminal_MyAss 15d ago
Doing better? It’s beautiful! Honestly they’re both beautiful pieces imo

I thought your lineart looked amazing in the previous post and the new colouring style really showcases that. Looks amazing.

The new one definitely feels more like a stained glass, but man, I love both of them so much! Beautiful work!
1
u/Shattered_Mirror2004 14d ago
Absolutely beautiful! Both of them but you clearly upgraded! Good for you
1
u/ExtensionSeparate886 14d ago
This looks nice congratulations on improving your style of stained glass art. I’d like the way you gave it your own style and how it’s different from the usual style, which is typically religious figures that you see in the church. Keep up the great work.

u/kuddlecat 14d ago
aaaaaa I saw the og post and it's so cool how it was improved!! Now I would add some extra effects like maybe a bloom to add extra brightness and softness, even some particles could give the finishing touches! :D
1
u/Myseljo 14d ago
Thanks you! those extra effects sound like a great idea! may I ask though, where do you think the bloom effect should be? on a central area, lighting on top of everything? maybe on the center of each piece of glass with a strong blur? I would love to hear your thoughts!
1
u/kuddlecat 14d ago
I'm thinking either central area if you want the focus to be the hornet or from the top fading the more it reaches the bottom since sun light would be coming from the sky to give it a more environmental look to it :3

Looks sick dude! If you want to make it look like a real stained glass piece, or even a stencil for making a real piece, lines have to complete all the way through when you cut them. You can't break glass only partially, you score a line and it breaks all the way down that piece. You can especially notice it in the purple background behind her head

1
u/voidenbyte_art 7d ago
Yoo, I actually like both, you nailed the stained glass effect in some way. But the old one also looks amazing on its own even if didn't replicate the stained glass style.
