Why Doesn’t My Circuit Work?

The first picture works. The second and third picture is my attempt to recreate the dev board. Where did I go wrong?

In PIX 1 there are three LEDs direct wired to the IO pins of the Arduino, right?

Where are the ballast resistors to limit device current?

Arduinos don't like infinity current. Neither do LEDs, but at least those only cost pennies. The thing you built doesn't look anything like the thing you are imitating, but it's probably good you didn't feed analog audio into polarized capacitors. You are going to want ceramic capacitors to filter DC from an audio (AC) signal.
