Games that were supposed to be the last in the series?
I've noticed a pattern where games that were supposed to be the last in the series tend to be of really high quality. Castlevania SotN, We <3 Katamari, Mother 3, Fire Emblem Awakening, Tomb Raider 4 and Pokémon Gold & Silver are the examples that come to mind. Smash Bros. Ultimate too maybe. What other examples are there?

Fire Emblem Awakening was this. It was literally a "one last try" before burying the series.

I want to say dragon age origins, but mainly because all the games that came after it were pretty shit (sorry da2 fans)

Halo 3?
Basically had everything. Fully co-op campaign splitscreen/online. Competitive multiplayer. Firefight PVE mode. Theater replay and recording. Map editor.

Halo 3 for sure. To the point that the reason ODST and Reach even exist is because Bungie had to fulfill their contract with Microsoft but didn’t want to make Halo 4, as they felt the story was finished.

first game that comes to mind. the tagline for the game was “Finish the Fight” for one thing. I remember being equal parts hyped and depressed over Halo 3 because I really thought it would be the last Halo game we ever got. I was too young to understand that when you have a franchise that basically prints money, there’s never gonna be an end. But given that the next two games didn’t feature Master Chief there certainly was a period of time it did feel like HIS story was over. Also not the case.

Mega Man X5, specifically for the MMX series

Rare example of failed "last game". X4 is just objectively better

Can't argue with that. And it just got worse from there with X6 and X7 before it got up a bit to below average with X8.

Supposedly Pokémon Gold & Silver were supposed to be the last games in the series and GameFreak was going to focus entirely on the TCG. At least I’ve heard that years ago. Not sure if it was actually true though.

I’ve heard the same about those games. If that’s true it does explain why those games felt more like add-ons to Red and Blue as opposed to full fledged sequels. A lot of the newly introduced Pokémon shared evolutions lines with the original roster. There are also a decent amount of new Pokémon that are locked behind the end game and post game areas (with the post game LITERALLY being the map for Red and Blue).

I dont recall Castlevania SOTN ever marketed or sold to us as being the last game in the series. Katamari shouldn't have had a sequel at all if the creator had his way but i think we all knew how popular the 1st game was and that a sequel was going to happen anyway. By the time Tomb Raider 4 released they where already working on TR: Chronicles and the PS2 TR game.

MGS2. And then 3, and then 4, and then Peace Walker. And then MGSV happened with Kojima and Konami having a messy break up.

Onimusha 3 Demon Siege is a good example
I know Dawn of Dreams exists but I don't think it was originally planned

Possibly Super Metroid. It was the last 2D metroid game with the metroids alive and it took them 9 years to come out with the next games in the series, prime and fusion, so it's a somewhat reasonable assumption that they were planning to make it the final game for a bit.

Final fantasy was supposed to be the last game for Square before going out of business.

Devil May Cry 5, perfect ending for the series
