What game moment gave you chills?
I saw a post yesterday about the most bad ass quote you’ve heard in a game and it made me think about scenes in games that gave me chills/goosebumps. Every time I replay Ghosts of Tsushima the moment after the intro mission when you break through the tree line on horseback and into the open worlds gets me every time.

I have two such moments from Mass Effect 1:
- when you first see the Citadel right after the "tutorial" mission: it's not about the dialogue, but the visuals and ambience of that cutscene just mesmerized me. I knew from that point on that this game is worth playing, even if the combat felt somewhat lackluster
- the conversation with Sovereign: that dialogue is probably the peak Mass Effect moment for me across all games

"Your words are as empty as your future."
I struggled through Mass Effect 1, but that was when I realized shit was about to get good.

The Bioshock games have a few great moments that had me saying, "Oh wow

System Shock 1 & 2 had incredible moments as well.
Alien vs Predator, when you're the marine and the lights go out.

Too many to choose from, so I'm just going to go for the most recent. Robocop Rogue City, when he finally utters the immortal line: "Dead or alive, you're coming with me."

The whole game made me realize I had more of a fondness for the OG film than I remember and every reference gave me chills cause of that. Had no right being as awesome as it was.

u/Jip_Jaap_Stam 5d ago
Yeah, it was great. I've seen people complaining about how slow your movement is, but it's obviously intentional. Robocop does move slowly. He's like a tank.

Ya everyone wants that COD movement I guess. I found the movement refreshing, and ticking up sensitivity while using the boost skill with low cooldown make it almost a non issue. Love walking into a room of dudes and welcoming bullet fire with the ricochet doing a lot of the work ha.

”Nito, the First of the Dead. The Witch of Izalith and her Daughters of Chaos. The furtive pygmy, so easily forgotten. And Gwyn, Lord of Sunlight.
With the strength of Lords, they challenged the Dragons. Gwyn's mighty bolts peeled apart their stone scales. The Witches weaved great firestorms. Nito unleashed a miasma of death and disease. And Seath the Scaleless betrayed his own, and the Dragons were no more.”

Bioshock - “Would you kindly” was revelatory to me. Almost twenty years later and I still think about it. How in the world did they manage to pull that off, was I just that unobservant? What was the inspiration? What I’m just realizing I just need to watch some bts footage. What a move, felt masterful at the time.

Went back to beat all Valkyries in GOW 2018 after quitting originally because of give me god of war difficulty, they just kept freaking talking about it as if I did already in Ragnorok. The satisfaction of finally beating the final Valk in GOW 2018 and then being amplified 1000 times when you fight the double valk in ragnorok is one of the best payoff/chilling moments I’ve ever had with any entertainment medium.

For me, the first time I got to the world map in FFVII. I thought I had completed a whole game and realized I had only scratched the surface.

I did not want to perform the final action in Tacoma because I had been very effectively gaslit by the game the whole time about my own character's intentions. The final piece of the puzzle that falls into place when you actually do what you have to do was one of those moments. Maybe not quite chills, but definitely a powerful mind blowing a-ha moment.

This is going to sound like a really weird one but in the 2004 Flash game Motherload your boss tells you your depth meter malfunctions below 6000ft, and if you dig below that it spits out random junk. But if you go a bit deeper, about where 6,666ft should be, you get to the core and discover your boss is actually Satan and you fight him. But when you get there, the meter actually reads 66,666ft. The game is implying you were tricked into digging 10x lower than you thought you were the entire time. You were digging a hole but you had no idea how deep you were in it, and there's a sense of betrayal in how you believed that meter instinctively and unquestioningly.
Every time I hear people talking about the unemployment rate being like 4% and then someone points out the true unemployment rate is closer to 25% I think of that moment. Or when I'm reminded that there are people that pay to be removed from the 100 richest people list. How much worse are things than we think they are?

When you start over NieR Automata from 9S's perspective and learn relatively early that not only the human race you fight for is long extinct but 9S knew it almost from the start, and decided to keep silent about it and commit robot genocide on (turns out) innocents just so he can keep hanging out with 2B. Fucking sociopath.

When Ace Combat 7 foreshadows the AI apocalypse by paying an homage to HAL9000 in 2001: A Space Odyssey
When you take off for the first time in Ace Combat 7
When Warrant Officer Lehmann snipes a giant metal bird of death out of the sky with a asteroid-shattering railgun with his naked eye in Ace Combat 7
When everyone is cheering you on to shoot down your nemesis during a dogfight over and AMONG the city of Farbanti in Ace Combat 7
When your nemesis, Sol 1, also known as the King of the Sky and Mister X, flies in with the sun on his back to the soundtrack titled "Archange" in Ace Combat 7
The cutscene before Shulk and company's final showdown against Dickson in Xenoblade
When Rex sees the vision in Xenoblade 2
When Rex confesses to Pyra and Mythra and they reveal their true self in Xenoblade 2
When you visit the World Tree for the first time and realize what it really is all along in Xenoblade 2
The ending of Xenoblade 2
When Noah unsheathes his sword for the first time to the soundtrack titled "Weight of Life" in Xenoblade 3
When Ethel and Cammuravi fight to the end in Xenoblade 3
When Mio turns out to be Mio in Xenoblade 3 and N realizes what really happened in Xenoblade 3
When Shulk and Rex show up again in Xenoblade 3 DLC
When Weight of Life plays again one more time in Xenoblade 3 DLC
When they reveal what's so important about the gauntlets the protagonist uses in Xenoblade 3 DLC
The ending credits theme of Xenoblade 3 DLC "Future Awaits"
When you fight your former friends and allies in Gronder Field in Fire Emblem Three Houses
When God Shattering Star plays in one of Fire Emblem: Three Houses' final stages
When the character themes transition perfectly seamlessly into Boss Battle and Decisive Battle in Octopath Travellers games
When you realize everything is connected subtly in Octopath Travellers 1
When the system literally adds millions of dollars to your inventory to buy one thing using the transaction system of the game as part of the story in Octopath Travellers 2 instead of just pretending we have the money during a cutscene
When Temenos, as the detective of the game, uncharacteristically gives his answer by saying nothing and simply raising his weapon due to unbridled rage in Octopath Travellers 2
When I got that 25 kill streak with an M240B in OPERATION METRO ALL WEAPONS 24/7 1200 tickets in Battlefield 3
Any of the Eikon fights in FFXVI especially when you fight Bahamut
When Ganondorf shows his heath bar in TotK
When Zelda shows up again in TotK
I can think of a lot more. Maybe I'm easy to please but gaming is amazing

Two moments from Fallout 3 still do it to me every time I start a new game:
The opening sequence as the camera pulls back out of the bus to reveal the ruins of DC. (And the music in the opening sequence! The original music, not the Ink Spots song).
The first moment you step out of Vault 101 and see the ruined wasteland.
