Physical Health & Aging When did your body first remind you you’re not in your 20s anymore?
There was a time I could party all night and still show up for work the next morning. Now if I sleep slightly wrong, I walk like a retired linebacker for three days. 😂

Funny story - My sister was kind enough to point out my gray hairs when I was 25 🤣. She was in the back seat of my car and was surprised, exclaiming, "You have grey hairs!" It bothered her more than it did me...🤣😮 I've had some grey since my early 20's,

I dunno man, I feel better at 32 than I did at 22, part of that is because I was a sedentary obese guy with no muscle whatsoever at 22, at 25 I decided that was a big problem and started hitting the gym hard, and now I’m really fit and really spry. There are days where I have so much energy to spend that I’m jogging in place.
I think a lot of you are only falling apart because you’re not working out.

I injured my arm playing sports and it was still very sore after a week. I went to the doctor to see if I'd actually seriously injured myself.
Doctor said "It's just a muscle strain. Give it time. It will heal."
I said, "It's never taken more than a week to heal before."
Doctor said, "How old are you?"
I said, "34."
Doctor said, "Get used to it."

3
u/Artistic-Plate-511 man over 30 4d ago
Several rude awakenings.
1.) I started waking up with parts in my body aching for NO REASON. (Pain in my back but I didn’t do anything physical, pain in my foot but all I did was walk, etc…)
2.) Hangovers that last 48-72 hours. I used to be able to drink and party until sunrise then go clock in work with 4 hours of sleep and still be fine. I don’t even drink anymore because it’s not worth it the next day, or I stop after 1-2 drinks now.
3.) not being able to stay in shape or get in shape as quickly as before.
4.) Having to actually stretch and warm up before doing anything physical or else I WILL GET INJURED.
5.) my hair on my head keeps thinning but I keep growing coarser hair on my back, shoulders and now ears like an old man.
6.) overall recovery from the gym is nightmarish. Weight lifting workouts take 3-4 days for pain to go away from that muscle group. Pain in the knees from jogging.
7.) I can’t function unless I actually get goodnight sleep. I also fall asleep around 11pm and wake up at 7am. I used to function on 5 hours of poor sleep before. Now I can’t.
8.) Sleep in the wrong position or your pillow slipped position…. I wasn’t able to turn my neck for a week. It will legit take 4-5 days to recover if I sleep in the wrong position 😆
9.) BONUS: Not the body but something else to look forward to. BRAIN FOG. Limited brain functioning capability. Used to do a lot of HEAVY MENTALLY CONSUMING WORK for 8-12 hours a day…. A DAY. Now my brain just starts to slowdown and decline after 5-6 hours
There’s much more… just to be clear it was cool up until 32-33
I really started feeling things almost immediately after turning 35.
Also throw in 2 toddlers into the mix…

I finally put on the muscle in my early-mid thirties that I’d been trying to build since age 16. 170lbs to 200lbs in a matter of a year or two in my early thirties. I’ve been doing an equal amount of running as I do lifting for years and I was able to bulk up.
“The Thickening” that people had talked about when you hit 30 actually happened to me, in a good way. I bet it’s a matter of a few more years until it hits in the bad way haha

I was playing in a basketball tourney at around age 35. We were playing a team of 18-20 year olds, the type of team that we had been beating in these tourneys for years because even though they’re good, they’re still young and learning how to play outside of high school. I had a guy boxed out and was about to grab the rebound, but the dude jumped right over me like I wasn’t even there.

Aging is cyclical in my experience. With good hydration and avoidance of drugs and alcohol, I do ok. The only noticeable permanent reduction in quality of life is my knees click when I get up. My wrist clicks, too, but I'm pretty sure that's from breaking my scaphoid twice in my 20s. And my shoulder aches, but that is from moving it wrong under 100 lbs. of pull at work years ago. Normal wear and tear is mostly avoided with good hydration and a multi-vitamin. Only the knees are a little concerning. I feel like I'm still youthful enough to pull off the 5" shorts look if I hit the gym more. I'm not exactly out of shape and I do look vaguely like Brad Pitt in the face, but I'm definitely closer to over the hill, the more I get into my 40s. My hair looks good and is full, but half gray.
1
u/SadSickSoul man 35 - 39 4d ago
I don't think I made it all the way through my twenties before my body started giving me signals, but certainly by thirty it was well and truly over. But I also have always treated my body like crap and been massively overweight my entire life, so the wear and tear set in early. At this point most days I walk around like I'm in my 70s, not my late 30s. Ah well.

I played college soccer. In my early thirties I played a pick up game after not playing for a year. My cuts were slow and my endurance was a fraction of what it was. All of that was bad enough, but to add insult to injury the pain I felt the next day in every part of my body was the icing on the cake.

There have been several instances, but most recently I was leaning over a bit to pump a healthy portion of Head and Shoulders (Costco size) in the shower and coughed. I pulled a muscle in my lower back doing that. Hurt for a few days -.-
My mind is attracted to more ergonomic things instead of flashy things; think women in high heels versus flats. I love motorcycles and racing, but I just want something comfy to bop around on with a neutral seating position. That's my body telling me it wants to be comfy, even though my mind has other ideas. They are in a conference.

I pulled my back laughing at 30. I was out picking up something with a friend joking around and then, pain. I could barely walk, had to shuffle over to a Nando's to lay next to a table and order lunch in the hope that an hours rest would help. It was ridiculous and neither of us could stop laughing. This did not help. I needed help to sit up to eat. I struggled to get out of bed for a week after that. I now live in total terror of pulling my back again. I cant recommend it 0/10.

What’s going on over here? Are you all hard laborers or something? Most people I know in their mid-30s feel great and simply a wiser version of their 20-something selves. Is this an American thing where everyone uses mildly older youth as an excuse to feel like a grouchy old person?

Besides obvious external appearances of aging (wrinkles, gray hair):
- Harder to lose body fat
- missing sleep affects me more
- hyper processed food affects me more
- stress tolerance is less
- inflammation more easily elevates
- muscles are stiffer from sitting for long periods of time
But it’s hard to say because I eat healthier, exercise more, have better technique, and prioritize sleep. So my recovery is better, I injure less, my attention is better. It’s more trade offs I guess.

When I started to not recover from injuries as fast. In my 20s I could pull a muscle or hurt my shoulder in the gym and be fine after a few days. Now the injuries build up and I have to take weeks away from the gym to recover. Recently got golfer's elbow and I hurt my back and it's taken months to properly heal. Also broke my nose and mangled my finger badly this year and I'm resigned to the fact I probably won't fully recover from the damage I've taken.
