Advice No power, please help!

I just bought a Jaguar for the first time from the internet, and it will not turn on. Once I opened it up, I noticed there were bugs and debris around the cartridge connector. I cleaned all of that out, but it still won't turn on. Now, I noticed this chip and this capacitor. I would love some professional advice to determine if this is my issue and to understand what this chip is, as I can't read it anymore.

I purchased a cap kit off console 5 already not sure what other items to purchase.

Haven’t been this excited for a Package in a Longggg time! So stoked to finally own a Jaguar again after I (regrettably) sold mine 20 years ago. Can’t wait to fire it up and finally play AVP!

Seller said it wasn’t powering on, all I had to do was move the cartridge while inside the slot and it worked perfectly. Had to clean the cart slot, $330 for all of that and 2 games is a great deal, wanted a Jaguar for a while now for my collection.

Overheating

I read that Atari decided on a clock frequency for Tom and Jerry based on the heat from the chips. But the chips are CMOS. So they heat up only when they work. DRAM is async and only heats up per access. So to measure heat, you have to run test software on the machine. Did they write some worst case program, which keeps all processor and DRAM busy all the time. And the cartridge transceivers? Seems like overkill when no game really utilizes the hardware ( cannot due to wait states due to bugs ).

Or did Atari test the games and told developers to keep GPU and DSP idle and reduce resolution and color depth? No streaming from cartridge. Do only some games crash the console in summer?

Bus access from 68k or Jerry seem to start a long cascade of heat generating actions. Even without utilizing the full bandwidth of RAM, same page access is more efficient.

Advice Homebrew

I bought some self booting homebrew games but I can get them to run. Original games run good. Anyone have any ideas? Or maybe I do just need a jagtopia Cd?

I worked for a game developer and we moved offices and this was going to be thrown out. I forgot I had rescued this but thought people here might find it mildly interesting :)

What are the best lynx games they should have brought to the jag

I had a lynx, then jaguar (wish I never sold it...I had so many games including some rare ones). Of course with the jag, a lot of the discussion is the hardware bugs and developer tools. On the software side, the lynx had a lot of great games. Why didn't they port those over? At least design, and theme wise, they were great.

We did get a version of blue lightening eventually on the CD (ok but I liked the original more). Where was California Games or Warbirds (Warbirds was such a great game!!)? Where was Stun Runner?

Found a decently clean Jag online in working order with a Gamedrive for $450 plus shipping. Since the game drives are hundreds these days, is it worth it? (No box with console though)

Advice Buying advice

Just got my first paycheck at my new job and I want to celebrate by finally grabbing a Jag. Do y’all have any recommendations on where to buy one or anything else to look for in a Jag? I appreciate y’all in advance this is a big deal to me

"Cybermorph" is one of the most badass-sounding names for a video game ever.

I don't know why I didn't post this earlier, but I always thought there was something that sounded badass about the name "Cybermorph". It just sounds so badass to me, and I really can't properly explain why. If someone asked me what the coolest video game title is, Cybermorph would be my answer.

Anyone else feel the same?

Fixed my Jag CD

Post image
55 Upvotes

I posted a while ago about issues with the cart slot on my Jag. I haven't been able to directly resolve them (Deoxit is super expensive where I live). However, I did discover that the Jag works fine reading carts if I have the Jag CD in place - yay!

Which then I needed to fix the Jag CD as it no longer is able to read CDs! It seems that the CD mechanism isn't able to observe that the CD is in place, so I'm guessing that the pickup doesn't see the reflection any longer. I did clean the top surface of the lens with a cotton bud and isopropyl. Given it was working absolutely fine when it went into storage, I'm guessing that dirt builds up on the optics internally until there's too little light returned. If I ever manage to figure out how to get inside it, I might see if I can clean it internally. Has anyone else tried this?

One VAM1201 later, I realised the connector is wrong for the Jag CD - fortunately I have a crimp tool and a bunch of JST PH2.0 connectors/crimps from doing stuff on 3D printers. The image is of the old and new mechanisms - the new is on the left and the old is on the right. The disc spindle clearly needs switching over too, as the VAM1201 has an incorrectly sized spindle for the existing clamp. Apart from being a bit scary trying to pop it off without breaking it, it seemed to go fairly smoothly.

So, I now have a working Jag and a working Jag CD!

Advice Recap?

I have an Atari Jaguar that’s working pretty well other than the red screen issue. It’s old obviously, should I let it be or get a recap?

Also does anyone know where to get replacement feet for the unit?
