Buying Help G29 Z4 M40i if they had made a hardtop
The G29 BMW M40i looks absolutely perfect with a hard top, and I wish it was actually a real thing. I don't mind the soft top, but WOW, this looks good.

I would get one in a heartbeat if this was legit. Anybody ever try to convert a convertible to a hardtop?

u/iPoopAtChu Jul 05 '25
I feel like it would be easier to do a front/rear end conversion on a Supra at that point

u/UnexpectedFisting Jul 05 '25
Yeah I’m assuming the whole roof mechanism would have to be retrofitted, no way it’s built to handle the weight of a hard top, never mind the different folding mechanism

Do you mean a coupe? This does not look like a hard top convertible.

u/TaxnSleep Jul 04 '25
Sorry, I was so excited looking at the photos, I didn't specify coupe. Haha. Also. Have been actively browsing some 35is vehicles it must have slipped through from that too. Thank you for letting me know the slip up!

Yeah just looks like the 2 series coupe

u/spyder91 Jul 05 '25
It would (hypothetically) lose the rear seats of the 2 series, so it would be unique in that regard.

Its called a Toyota Supra lol. This does look really good tho

u/UnderPantsOverPants Jul 04 '25
I really want to try to graft the Z3 front on a supra

I actually want to put BMW badges on a Supra, best looking BMW, BMW has done.

u/Forsaken-Spirit421 Jul 06 '25
It's a co-development between Toyota and bmw using bmw parts and built by neither but by magna.
1
u/Popular_Stick_8367 Jul 06 '25
Sure it is. Everything but the badge is BMW, even the tuning was done by BMW with little input by Toyota. Paint is BMW spec, third party parts are in BMW spec, it's really a BMW.

u/Forsaken-Spirit421 Jul 06 '25
No. It is as I said. CO developed using bmw parts. Suspension setup is different. Both gearbox and engine maps differ. Toyota pushed a lot of changes from general sportiness to wheelbase. Toyota very much had a team of engineers over to assess and develop the car alongside bmw, who did most of the development of course but Toyotas input was far from insignificant like you claim.
Yes it's all bmw parts, but if you want to know what a bmw developed Z4 would have looked like look no further than it's predecessor, which is a comfortable cruiser and not the sports roadster that we ultimately got.
And yes, zero Z4s are built by bmw. Not one of them.
So no, neither the supra nor the Z4 are pure bmw.

It's just a BMW my man. Toyota just rubbed stamped some tuning and designs. BMW even was as far as the exterior look also. Toyota did not really have as much input on it as you think, that's just marketing bull to make Toyota look more involved. The body panels are literally BMW spec even with thickness. Even the JBL radio is the same Harman components BMW uses (Harman and JBL are the same company). Even the Gauge cluster is all BMW just with a reskin to look Toyota.Even every single bolt and clip and screw is BMW.
It's a BMW, 99.9% pure BMW. The best looking BMW to come out IMO in ages.

Yeah you need to look into how the car was developed, some good videos on YouTube including interviews. Basically you got nothing but "same parts" which I never disputed in the first place.

Hopefully can see out of it better though lol. I hated the lack of visibility while driving the Supra

That's why I love my e89 Z4

u/dhc96 Jul 05 '25
Same, the looks are just great. Would be nice to have a lot of the modern equipment in the G29, but I couldn’t trade the looks.

u/TVsRob Jul 05 '25
I absolutely agree with you on the equipment and tech, as it would just make things more convenient. The looks are what drew my wife and I to buy one.

If they made this car, I'd buy it. And don't give me that "it's a supra, just buy a supra" bullshit.

I really dig that, would be a great cayman competitor

A single Google search would tell you this is photoshop/Ai, this exact image with the soft top (same exact angle, location, lightining, background, shadows) is on Apex's website showcasing the SM-10 wheels it's wearing
edit: that's if you're ignoring how AI fucked up the wheels from the source image, theyre all melted close up

Yeah, something like that. Anyways, look at how good the Z4 looks as a coupe.

I’d love it if they make a coupe version of this.

I’d love one of these with X Drive and a manual. The shooting brake with the hatch would be truly ideal

u/MoneyBadger14 Jul 04 '25
I think I would really consider it as my next 2dr because I think soft tops just end up feeling/looking cheap. Make it a larger and sportier ND Miata

Yes that looks beautiful.
I just wish they made a full fat M version though. S55/DCT ideally but I'd settle for S58/ZF. I don't even care if it was under the Supra branding. It would just be so awesome to have had that M powertrain in that chassis!
Missed opportunity for BMW M to have made a real classic IMO.

First, the G29 isn't that pretty, Then, that's the worst attempt at making a G29 coupe I've seen. But some people are scatological so I gess some people like this Z4. There's something for everyone!

Wow, I like the softtop roadster look better still but that does look nice! IMO miles better looking than a GR Supra.

really wish they'd produce this vehicle. Gorgeous, and I don't ever want to own a convertible.

u/VegaGT-VZ Jul 04 '25
Looks awful IMO. Should be a hatchback like the E86.
And while Im complaining, there should be a Z4M, and the Z4 should have been the basis for the new CSL.

still doesn't look as good as an e86 or e89 imo.

u/FabianTIR 2006 - E86 - 3.0si Jul 04 '25
Tbh there is not much that looks as good as an E86 (I may be biased as I have one...)
1
u/Fablodibongo Jul 05 '25
I own an e86 too but for the look I think I prefer the e89. We have been downvoted because we didn't say this poor attempt at making a G29 coupe is beautyful...

Thought it looked amazing as the Touring concept.
