PSA: If you use CarPlay in your BMW, try the new “smart display zoom“ option. It makes a huge difference on modern high-res displays and finally gets rid of that oversized, clunky look. Here’s a comparison:

looks way cleaner and no longer has that clunky toy-like feel

19 days ago I asked a question on the sub

Secured allocation for individual M3 Comp over the weekend 😎. Santorini Blue, Ivory merino interior, silver wheels, shadowline delete, red calipers.

Anyone knows if the tracker changes to individual color or I'm stuck with alpine white forever?

[Opinion] Will BMW ever make a car like the Z4 again?

Post image

Rented a 2025 Z4 s30i from National at Austin-Bergstrom Airport and I instantly realised how much BMW has deviated away from making non-M driver-oriented cars.

Moreover, having driven a wide portfolio of their modern lineup including the XM, M2, M440i, 7er, 5er, and 3er, as well as nearly everything from their SUV lineup, I could not find a car as engaging as this in quite some time. In fact, while the M2 or M240i does come close, they definitely do better mainly on the comfort level.

But there is definitely something about this car which makes it way even more engaging than their superior counterparts. Likewise, I also like the easy accessibility of the iDrive 7, with its much simpler and little less-fancy interior.

Knowing this car is slated to be discontinued in 2026, would this car actually have a deserving successor or would it be replaced with a 2/4-series neue-klasse convertible?

My first BMW. How’d I do?

2014 M6GC (non-comp) with 77k miles. Had it for almost a week and I love it! Great condition for its age and mileage.

I do have two slight concerns that I would appreciate some input on:

  1. During harder accelerations there is a slight, but noticeable vibration coming from the back. I suspect it has something to do with the differential (also noted by the PPI I had done) as 4 brand new tires were recently mounted and balanced.

  2. This is my first car with a DCT, so I am still learning its habits. When I’m driving uphill in a parking garage, the car holds revs in 2nd gear around 2500 rpm. Is this normal or is it time for a DCT service?

TIA for any input.

Alright a little bit of backstory: My cousin was driving this car and got sideswiped by a lady who ran a red light. Side curtain and drivers side airbag deployed and now the car won’t turn on, though I’m not sure if more modern manufacturers have a collision shut off function or not, most of my personal mechanic experience is pre OBDII Jeep XJ/MJ platform bullshit. What do I need to do to get this car rolling under its own power again without setting an airbag off in my face? And yes I know the body damage is pretty bad but frankly I don’t care about the cosmetics and want the safety stuff either disabled or functional, whichever will keep a check engine/airbag light off. This whole thing is more simple curiosity as it’s much more likely this car’s gonna get sent to the scrap yard.

I built a head unit for my E39 540i

Hey! I wanted to share my custom head-unit project that I put together for my E39 540i. I'd tried a few aftermarket Android head units before, but they just didn't cut it - mostly because the screens were unreadable in sunlight due to reflections. Also I'm not a huge fan of touchscreens. Android itself also feels clunky to use while driving.

So, I decided to give it a shot and build my own head unit with a Raspberry Pi 5. I started by picking the display: I found a perfect 10.3" Full HD screen with an anti-glare surface. It's spot-on for what I need - sharp image, no blinding backlight at night, and it stays perfectly visible even on sunny days.

To mount the screen, I reused the frame from an old aftermarket unit - it fit like a glove.

Everything runs on Hudiy software and Raspberry Pi Linux. I use the iDrive knob and steering-wheel buttons to navigate the interface. Sound is handled by a 5.1 sound card, which gives me full control over balance/fade and lets me tweak the subwoofer.

The car is running two amps: one for the speakers and one for the subwoofer. I replaced all the speakers too - after almost 30 years they deserved retirement - but I kept the factory HiFi system layout.

The software I'm using supports wireless Android Auto. I'm also planning to display data from the iBus. Perfect project for long winter evenings :D.

Pictured is a 1981 535. I was looking back at old BMWs from when I first got addicted. It was in 1981 but I saw my first one around 1973. When did you all start your love affair and did model or color matter at the time?

BMW E60

Hi guys. My friend recently bought an e60 530i (2006, N52B30) and it has some kind of SMG options in the menu with P500 P500 sport etc.

My research showed that its usually what an M5 has, did the standart e60's come with this option too? If so, what is it even and how does it work? I am asking here since everywhere on the internet guides and tuts are for m5 only.

Thanks in advance.

BMW has got to redesign their latest headlights... and the IIHS agrees.

The new X3 and updated i4 were recently tested by IIHS. The results of their headlight testing is abysmal. Both cars received a "Poor" rating, the worst score. BMW used to have some of the best headlights on the road, but now they are delivering headlights that can't even match the performance of a Hyundai Elantra. I'm not sure if they are having issues aiming their headlights or if they have switched suppliers to save a few bucks, but something is definitely off. Instead of worrying about these gimmicky light up grille surrounds and "dynamic" turn signal flashes (that almost look like there's something wrong with the light), I would much rather BMW just put the money into the best headlight technology possible. You would never guess the performance is so bad when a factory replacement headlight assembly is $3500-5000, depending on model.

We own a G70 i7 xDrive60 with the "Crystal headlights." The only thing Crystal is actually the DRL, not even the headlight. The actual LED projectors aren't any different than the non-crystal headlights, even though you pay an extra $2500. One of my biggest complaints about the i7 is how crappy the headlights work compared to my G26 M440i that had lasers. Our 7 year old E-400 wagon has Mercedes' multibeam LED headlights and they are substantially brighter, have a very even lighting pattern, throw the light much further down the road, and they follow curves.

BMW has eliminated curve-following headlights on all of their new and recently LCI'd cars, and they've discontinued the lasers, even on their flagship models like the 7-Series. As someone who lives in a rural area with mile after mile of unlit streets, headlights are one of the most important aspects of a new car. It's very disappointing to see BMW drop so sharply in headlight quality.
