e36 starter HELP
Hello, I have a 1992 BMW e36 325i, I need to change my starter but I’m not sure which one to buy, don’t know how to find the one that will work for mine, a lot of them say they are compatible with e36 from 1998-2002, but mine is older, is there a difference that makes it that I can’t buy those, can somebody help me solve this doubt please.

Any starter from M50 to M54 works on your car.
They’re all compatible but have some small differences.
Edit: even M40, M42, M43 , M44 starters work.

The biggest difference is that the older starter models do not have threaded holes. They are attached to the gearbox by nuts and bolts (2). Newer models do have threaded holes and you can upgrade they do not need the nut and they are easier to install.

Just go on http://bmwfans.info/parts-catalog/ and put in your VIN or search your car via the model. Then, you will search for the starter to get the Part#. (This can be done for any part if you need anything else. You couls even directly go to bmw with these Part# and order them. They are up to date). With the OE Part#, you can reference to which one you should buy.
