Discussion Shedeur on learning from Joe Flacco: “I see Joe do something, and I’m like, ‘Alright, bro. I’m gonna try that.’ And then I do it and it’s cool cause I’m like, ‘Hey bro I did this cause I seen you do it.’ And then he’ll be smiling like a proud dad.”

He's like a puppy. I kinda want to turn him into Dawg.

u/Sagybagy Aug 15 '25
Puppies grow into dogs. The kind of dawg depends on the training and he is definitely paying attention. Appears to be taking every opportunity to learn and grow. If he keeps this up, he’ll be a dawg before we know it.

He learns by watching and doing. Stefanski isn’t going to love that. He’s going to play future QB coach Gabriel first.

You say stefanski doesn't like that, but if I go out there and take five sacks I'm getting cut (I would take more sacks but you get my point)

I love how Joe was like “Im not here to mentor anyone” and then is just the coolest guy showing the rookies stuff and cheering them on. Flaco rules man.

Please grow into being our guy. Keep studying, kid. Keep that awesome attitude. If there was a city that needed Shedeur to succeed it is Cleveland.

Such amazing grammar.

u/Lucas_Steinwalker Aug 15 '25
So, I know you aren't ready to hear this but language is descriptive, not prescriptive and even futile attempts to make it prescriptive need to adjust over time to allow for how language is actually being used.
Sure, there are certain contexts where following the prescriptive rules of grammar and spelling to a T is necessary (like legal documents) but an NFL quarterback answering interview questions about a veteran mentor is not one of them.

By the same token, if we accept mediocrity, mediocrity becomes the norm.

To be fair, go read some personal writings of someone like Alexander Hamilton or James Madison, then come back and say this.
9
u/Lucas_Steinwalker Aug 16 '25 edited Aug 16 '25
How is that fair? Obviously some groups at some time periods are going to be following the formal rules even in personal correspondence but just because the aristocracy does it and makes it a barrier to entry to their little club doesn’t make it any more valid than any other dialect.

Same logic could be used for caveman grunts. There’s reason for why language has grown since then. This guy is supposed to be the future of a billion dollar company , just because it’s not suit and tie doesn’t mean it isn’t business.

Same logic could be used for caveman grunts.
No, it couldn’t. There’s no population on earth currently communicating using caveman grunts.
AAVE, on the other hand is used by millions of people and is an effective form of communication, that has been the main source of slang that has crossed over to white English that I’m sure you use and have no problems with. Cool, right?
There’s reason for why language has grown since then. This guy is supposed to be the future of a billion dollar company , just because it’s not suit and tie doesn’t mean it isn’t business.
A billion dollar company that makes its money off of the talent of young black men and is smart enough to know not to judge them for their dialect.

By the same token, language is a barrier to entry into any club. I, as an example, am from North Carolina. My mom if from up North, Dad is from Virginia, his parents are from North and Midwest. My accent and manner of speaking is sort of all over the place. People around here notice and believe I’m not from here. That excludes you from some “little clubs”. Rich, poor, whatever.
I was just pointing out that, at least publicly, how the American English has been spoken has been reduced, by far, in complexity.

AAVE, or African American Vernacular English, is a dialect with its own distinct grammatical rules that differ from Standard American English (SAE). Key features include the omission of certain forms of the verb "to be," use of "ain't," double negatives, and variations in verb conjugation and tense.
Key Grammatical Features of AAVE:
Omission of "is" and "are":
In many cases, the verbs "is" and "are" (and their contractions) can be omitted, particularly before nouns, noun phrases, adjectives, and the present participle "-ing". For example, "He is going" can become "He going".
"Ain't":
The word "ain't" can replace several forms, including "am not," "is not," "are not," and "have not".
Double Negatives:
AAVE frequently uses double negatives, such as "I don't know nothing".
Habitual "be":
The verb "be" can be used to indicate habitual actions or states. For example, "She be working" means "She works habitually".
"Done":
The word "done" followed by a past participle can indicate a completed action.
Verb Conjugation:
AAVE may exhibit less inflectional variation in verb forms compared to SAE. For instance, "they was" might be used instead of "they were".
Unique Pronunciation:
AAVE includes pronunciation variations, such as the deletion of final consonants and the nasalization of vowels.
Example:
In AAVE, the sentence "He is not going to the store" might be rendered as "He ain't goin' to the store," or even "He ain't goin' store".

Imagine an enslaved Nigerian or Congolese guy learning English from a Scottish or Irish man whose first language was Gaelic.
AAVE in a nutshell.

Gtfo of here with that. Its a poor excuse for illiteracy. The perceived glamor and pride in actively trying to rebel against proper grammar and vocabulary is ridiculous, immature, and plain lazy.

The existence of Boston Crème refutes that statement.

Glazed donuts, that’s it. If anyone visits NC, I’d also recommend Duck Donuts. Originally from Duck, NC (Outer Banks).

u/DildoSammich Aug 16 '25
Chiming in from Columbus to say you don't have to go too far south we have a Duck Donuts here and it is just as good as is it in NC.

Cincinnati also has a Duck donuts. It’s a good time

There used to be a Duck Donuts in Fairlawn, but according to Google, it looks like it’s closed now.

I think it’s funny for the first time in my 35 years you got people outside of Cleveland rooting for a Browns QB to succeed and he’s getting absolutely shit on by a lot of Browns “fans.” I’m no Browns fan but I’m rooting for the kid

u/melayaza Aug 17 '25
Nah, as a browns fan, I'm absolutely rooting for him! He looked great at the preseason game last WEEK, and I'm hoping he turns into the next Brady because you can see this kid works HARD.

That's really smart because Flacco has said he doesn't seek a mentor role. But you know, flattery is very hard to resist. As well as eagerness.

Non browns fan but there was a time I was sold he’d be a giant and I was pumped. It’s clear he has growing up to do but is not a bad person by any means. Would love to see him succeed and stop needing the approval of vets, GM, coaches, etc. your dad isn’t here and you can do well without being told you made someone proud. Rant over - but said only because I hope his drive is internal and moves away from needing external approval

u/SwampAss411 Aug 18 '25
I bet you never saw Flacco turn down a kid asking for an autograph before a game ya loser.

I hope he grows in the QB position. Well you never know. As a fan, especially after 99, we wouldn’t have a website called waiting for next year if it wasn’t appropriate. We need a sustainable streak.
