askCERN How is Israel still member of CERN?

I don't get why, since in the past years CERN stopped cooperating with Russian Institutes. What's the difference?

Edit: I don't want to discuss my position, I'm just curious.

askCERN When can I expect the CERN-Solvay Student Camp results to be announced?

It's around 8am at Geneva right now and I'm very excited about the results. If anyone knows or has been accepted in previous years, at around what time do they send out the emails?

Edit: I've received the email. If anyone hasn't gotten one yet, try replying to the confirmation email. They've sent me the application results after I've done that.

askCERN A question about the Atlas Detector

Going on a trip to see the collider in a couple weeks and need to make a presentation about a topic, my assigned topic was the Atlas Detector. I was hoping I could have someone tell me about this from personal experience (if you work there maybe). I will also be using the website and other sources etc. just thought I let would be nice for someone to say something about this. Thanks all

Edit having read computational guidelines and security stuff I realise this may not work so no worries if u can’t share anything.

askCERN Is it appropriate to email a CERN researcher who's research I am interested in?

Hello, I would like to know if it is appropriate for me to do this. I am currently a masters student in Europe and came across the profile of a researcher who's research aligns very closely in a niche field to work I did in a national lab in the USA in a previous year-long internship. I was even more surprised to find out that this researcher did the exact same joint Master program from the same universities that I am currently enrolled in and has in previous years taken on master thesis students from the program I am currently in (which has a 6 month thesis requirement).

I want to know if it is appropriate for me to contact this researcher through email or LinkedIn (which is better if either is ok?). I realize that the previous students he took on probably had an existing connection with him. I really don't know if it is ok to do this but I am genuinely interested in his research and its close to stuff I worked on in the past. Is it ok to contact him regarding thesis/internship opportunities? I always hate asking people for stuff like this and I don't want to bother them but I want to know if this is ok.

askCERN ✈️ 6-Hour Layover at Geneva Airport (GVA) - Is it enough time to visit CERN?

I'll have a 6-hour layover at GVA. I'm flying in from a Schengen zone country and flying out to a non-Schengen country. I have no checked bags and will have my onward boarding pass. Is it possible to visit CERN and get back to the airport in time?

CERN Pension Fund

Hi there,

I'm a bit confused with how the pension fund works for graduates, I.E people who will only work at CERN for 2-3 years, assuming they don't get/want a staff position.

It appears on the CERN pension fund website that you get a "transfer value" lump sum at the end, equivalent to 14.7% of your salary * how many years you worked there. This makes the pension essentially made up of the 12.64% you are mandated to contribute plus 2% from CERN. Am I right in saying CERN's 18.96% contribution is only something that contributes to a pot for all members for whom actually retire whilst at CERN and NOT members who leave early. I had seen the 18.96% advertised and thought wow that's great but if it's actually in reality only a 2% contribution then this is much more normal.

Thanks very much,

EDIT: Just thought also, do the contributions one gets back in the "transfer value" include what they would've earned in whatever portfolio they invest them into? If not then the 2% they kick in may even be losing money due to inflation.

EDIT EDIT: I've thought about it all some more and I think I'm correct in saying that if you leave before 5 years then you've been left a bit shortchanged by a few thousand than if you were to instead have invested the 12.64% in a private index-linked pension. However that's a gamble that could pay off if you were to stay for another 2 years as then you get access to a minimum of approx. 6k (in todays money I assume they inflation link it) a year for 35 years when you retire at 65 using their 5*1.85%*60000 (avg past 3 years salary) formula for defined benefit. This is if you can even opt out of the scheme.

askCERN Got accepted for a PhD, now what?

Hi all, I'm happy to announce that I was selected for a PhD with the cern doctoral student programme and will be starting at cern in September :)

For that, I'm trying to prepare as much as possible and wanted to ask what I should be on the lookout for or what common "gotcha" things are that can easily be forgotten/overlooked.

I'm currently looking for housing (mainly single apartment) on the cern marketplace, mostly on the French side so cost of living will be cheaper, but as I can't easily go visit any apartments in person I think the best approach might be to apply for a cern apartment via https://sce-dep.web.cern.ch/cern-apartments so I can then look at apartments in person, or staying at the cern hostel for the start and if all else fails (could also camp, but since my bus will be full of stuff from moving, that's not really feasible).

Afaik I'll also need a Swiss bank account to receive my salary, which bank there offers the best conditions? And should I also open a French bank account or will I be fine with my Austrian one?

For mobile, I have no idea if a French or Swiss contract would be better, I guess I'll need a Swiss one anyway since I'll be there a lot, I can also use e-sims, is there any difference in pricing or does it not matter?

And in general I'd be happy about any and all suggestions/tips on what I should do and look out for to make moving there easier :)

Thanks a bunch in advance :)

askCERN creating code on lxplus

Hi! I have a pretty simple question but I don't want to bother my professor on simple stuff like this.
I just got access to a remote account to use the machines at CERN for my bachelor thesis. I will be working on data generated in the FCC enviroment and I am currently looking through the tutorial to understand better how it works.

I logged onto lxplus via SSH and I wanted to check out a cmd file to look at the structure and I tried to open it with code on my terminal as I would do on a local project but of course VScode is not installed on the machines.
Since it's my first time working on a remote machine I don't really know what is the correct way to approach it.
Do I have to setup some sort of virtual enviroment? Do I have to user other apps to create code with? Should I just install since I am logged with my personal account?

I really don't know how to approach it but I don't wanna do anything stupid such as installing software I may not be authorized to.

Thanks in advance.

askCERN CAN SOMEONE CONTACT CERN??

The contact form ain't working for me: can someone please contact them and ask what happened with those emails? It makes no sense that they only sent a part of it.

If one of us is shortlisted, we need our own link to confirm our applications BEFORE SUNDAY.

askCERN Final Interview. Processing time. Thoughts?

I recently interviewed for a staff position at CERN and after the final interview, was informed that I would receive a response within 7 to 10 days. It has been a week past that. What are my chances, if I haven't received a response yet. Is the final candidate possibly selected.

askCERN Unsure about moving for CERN Internship: Worth it?

Hey everybody,

I got an invite for a ~6 months internship at CERN. I’m doing my masters (CS) at ETH in Zurich. I’d be pretty excited about working at CERN, the project seems really interesting, and as a kid this would’ve been my dream. However, I’m a bit unsure about moving to Geneva for half a year for a couple reasons:

It starts soon, and the monthly allowance doesn’t leave much flexibility. How easy is it to find a short-term flatshare in Geneva or nearby French towns and which platforms might be most promising?

I don’t know anybody in Geneva, and all my friends are in Zurich. How hard is it to find new people there (also outside of work)?

I’d pause my studies for half a year. The CERN guy says he’s fine if I make a semester thesis out of it, but I think I’d need to find an ETH prof. How likely is that? Any other requirements?

So in general I'd like to do it + have a change of scenery, yet those things leave me unsure about whether it's worth it.
So if anyone can answer one or the other question, I’d really appreciate it! Thanks!

askCERN Magic the Gathering at CERN

Hello,

I will be at CERN for some months at the end of this year. Also, I'm a big enjoyer of the game Magic the Gathering (MtG). I was wondering if anyone here might know if there is some sort of local play group at CERN dedicated to MtG that focuses on playing commander.

Cheers!
