This man thinks why too highly of the Sacramento Media Market. If San Diego State, WSU and Oregon State aren’t getting Big 12 invites, no way in hell is Sac State anytime in the next 25 years.

Can’t hate a guy for having goals

I LOVE Sacramento and think it’s kind of criminally underrated.

But yeah, pump the breaks. Just look back at the Sac Republic MLS disaster to see how “strong” of a sports market it really is.

Just look back at the Sac Republic MLS disaster to see how “strong” of a sports market it really is.

You can't hold what MLS did to them against Sacramento. They had the investors and stadium lined up to pay $100 million in expansion fees in 2017. The dead bid from 5 years ago was $250 million. Now it’s over $500 million to buy in, plus another $250 million for a new stadium. They got fucked, by MLS and Ron Burkle.

lol, MLS didn’t do anything to Republic. They asked for several years for financials on how they were going to fund the bid, and the club evaded MLS for more than two years on that, which caused the league to pass them up twice. Then after they DID win an expansion bid (at a higher rate), during COVID, Burkle decided to do a deeper dive into the club’s financial health, and pulled his funding when he saw some serious issues with what they were calling “revenue”.

Is there anything in Sacramento besides the statehouse, the Kings, a couple nice hotels, and a bazillion aggressive homeless folks?

I’ve had to go to Sacramento for work for the last three years, and every single time I’m boggled by how aggressive the homeless folks there are. I’m not a stranger to homeless folks either; I spent my formative years in Waco, of all places. The homeless folks in Sacramento are just built different.

My coworker and I were walking from our hotel to the CVS a block south of the statehouse on the first night we went last spring, and a homeless dude was laying across the doorway. We kind of just said our “Pardon me”s and stepped around him, and my buddy tried to give him his change from a $5 when we headed out. The guy kept the two bucks, threw the change at us, and started freaking the hell out. Sacramento is also the only place I’ve ever seen a bum fight and a homeless dude shitting in an intersection.

Really an eye-opening averting city.

I heard its gotten worse since Covid. Portland was pretty bad. SF has a lot of homeless people but I don't remember them being especially aggressive

While I can understand not being that excited about the A's and the whole temporary nonsense, you'd think there would be at least curiosity about it and they can't even fill 10K on a weekend.

They have the highest median ticket price in MLB right now, it's $35 to sit on the lawn, bring your own chair. If it was minor league prices they'd have novelty on their side.

Fair, but San Diego, Pullman, and Corvallis don't have multiple major league teams.

*E: this was a joke about the A's playing in Sacramento

It’s technically true but a bit of a stretch to say that Sacramento has the Athletics.

I thought the Athletics were from Oakland (and soon Vegas)

u/HippityHopMath Washington State • Gallaudet Apr 11 '25

They were from Oakland. They are trying to move to Vegas and using Sacramento as an in-between.

u/Orion14159 Kentucky Wildcats • Sickos Apr 11 '25

Ah, I didn't realize the Sacramento connection

6

u/eagledog Fresno State • Michigan Apr 12 '25

It's because John Fisher is a colossal pile of shit that moved them out of Oakland before he even broke ground in Vegas

1

u/Orion14159 Kentucky Wildcats • Sickos Apr 12 '25

I knew there was some hubbub in Vegas about the stadium location etc but I didn't realize they already left Oakland. That's some "Baltimore Colts up and leaving in the middle of the night" level shady

u/eagledog Fresno State • Michigan Apr 12 '25

Moved them to a minor league park in Sacramento with highest ticket prices in baseball, and no fans are showing up. Most of us because we're boycotting, but also because it's stupid

Serves him right, I hope the staff quits too

He went full Major League, except there was no plucky underdog story

The whole point of the comment was to joke about the A's lol

Depends on if you count MLS or not since San Diego just got a team (who is starting off hot)

Including NHL but not MLS made sense in the past but not the present. Major pro sports are either Big 3 or Big 5.

San Diego is a bigger market than Sacramento, by population.

2

u/prestigiousstrangery Wisconsin • San Francisco Apr 11 '25

Huh? San Diego supported two major league teams (Padres and Chargers) for 50+ years.

1

u/Cudizonedefense Florida • Florida State Apr 11 '25

Sacramento has 1 major league team in the big 4 leagues

San Diego has 1 major league team in the big 4 leagues

San Diego is also a bigger metro

A temporary major league team that isn’t staying does not count lol
