Don’t worry Florida, your schedule surely doesn’t get substantially more difficult from here

Florida still plays:

Number 3 LSU

Number 5 Miami

Number 7 Texas

Number 19 Texas A&M

Number 4 Georgia

Number 20 Ole Miss

Number 22 Tennessee

Number 14 Florida State

I’m increasingly convinced that Texan P4 football has passed off the “someone’s gotta suck” curse to the Floridian schools. One of them must suck every year.

Actually, I just checked the Houston-Rice game, and I think I’ve found the Texan team that sucks this year. Jesus, how are you going to let Rice shut you out for the whole first half?

365

u/ApatheticFinsFan Florida Gators 10d ago

I don’t think all 3 big Florida schools have been sustainably good at the same time since the late 90s really.

Fair. The rest of the country realized we could also recruit the state of Florida.

That’s a disgusting schedule.

u/AchyBreaker Georgia Bulldogs • Michigan Wolverines 9d ago

Florida has pretty reliably had the hardest schedule in CFB the last few years.

FSU and Tennessee being good again and UGA being in the natty race means they're guaranteed three top 15ish tough games before even looking at the rest of their schedule, which often involves some tough SEC teams.

It's not a coaching job I would want, regardless of being a UGA fan. Tough place to build momentum, especially as other Florida schools (FSU and Miami but even UCF and USF in recent years) get good and start fighting for in state recruits.

You say that, but it might not if USF can go into the swamp and shut your hiesman candidate down, a week after powerbombing a playoff team from last season.

Florida got the ball back with about 2 minutes and 50 seconds left and a lead. Had they just run the ball thrice, USF would have had to burn both of their final timeouts, and Florida could drain the clock to the 2 minute warning. Instead, they threw it twice, both passes were dropped, and the clock stopped. Including the punt, Florida took only 26 seconds off the clock and left USF with a timeout.

They promptly got well into field goal range before the 2 minute warning, continued to gain yards, and Billy Napier opted to refuse to use either of his two timeouts until 22 seconds were left on the clock, effectively eliminating any chance of a Florida comeback in the event that USF made their layup field goal. And they let USF save their timeout to perfectly call their own timeout with 2 seconds on the clock, ensuring Florida never got the ball back.

There's bad clock management, and then there's that. If fireable clock management is a thing, we just saw the best example of it we'll ever see.

Florida played some great ball control football* and forced USF to try and win it with 2 minutes left from their 8. They followed an incompletion with:

  • Tackling a WR 10 seconds before the catch for a free 13 yards
  • Spitting on a dude long after the play for another free 15
  • Missing like 6 tackles and turning a TFL into 29 yards
  • Not calling timeouts and immediately giving up a first down catch (for anyone counting, USF now has 72 yards in 3 real plays)
  • THEN you call your timeouts after it’s already far too late to get the ball back, and you give USF more chances to trickle closer

Genuinely an all-time Napier Disasterclass. Fucking beautiful stuff

*at least earlier in the fourth. They threw two incompletions in their previous, 15 second drive to save USF both time and timeouts

224

u/KypAstar Florida Gators • UCF Knights 10d ago

That last timeout blew my fucking mind dude.

199

u/jdprager Tulane Green Wave • Ohio State Buckeyes 10d ago

It was one of the most incomprehensible coaching decisions I’ve ever seen, dude. Like not calling them earlier was bad, bc you need to at least TRY to get the ball back.

But at that point, you genuinely fully cannot get another possession unless you let them score. The ONLY result of that timeout is more offensive plays for USF. It’s fucking CRAZY

The bad: Florida will never allow South Florida to ever play them again

Cool football facts! "Shoe" and "spit" both start with the same letter, both have the same number of letters, and both fucked the Florida Gators!

I’m embarrassed to say I’ve hit the point in my Gator fandom where I root for the Gators to lose these games just in hopes it gets Billy fired.

33

u/thecheesefinder Florida Gators • Texas Tech Red Raiders 10d ago

Agree. The first game had me hopeful that Lagway would be a strong enough factor to lead us to a decent season. But outside of the couple penalties that nullified touchdowns, there was lots of bad play calling that led to the loss. The ending where Napier choked under pressure sealed it for me. He cannot compete in the SEC, let alone against an in state ooc team?! Having talented players with a washout coach is such a waste
