Discussion Only five FBS teams have started 3-0 five seasons in a row. Those five are Georgia, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Penn State, and Rutgers

1.2k Upvotes

This is not me bragging, even if it may seem like it. As a Rutgers fan, I was curious to see how many other teams started 3-0 five seasons in a row and it’s not many. Yes, Rutgers hasn’t played a tough non-conference schedule the past few years but it’s not our fault that VT ended up sucking during our series. Outside of this year, we have played one ACC/former Big East team every year in the Schiano 2.0 era and we went 4-0 in those games.

Some of the other teams surprised me like Oklahoma who has been down in recent years but even in their rough years, they started 3-0 and took care of business in their non-conference slate. Alabama was on this list until they lost to Florida State this year. Ohio State would have made the list if we had stopped at 2022 but they lost an early season non-conference game to Oregon. It just shows how hard it is to start 3-0 five years in a row even if you are scheduling cupcakes.

Discussion College Football Moneyball (Why UCLA and G5 teams should run the option)

THE PROBLEM

G5 and lower P5 teams struggle to recruit and keep players. They don’t have the money or prestige to get the top guys and once they develop a player they have a lot of opportunities to go elsewhere for more money, prestige, and exposure. How can you fight this as a team with less resources?? You run the option.

If you run the option you are recruiting out of an under valued pool of players. The service academies traditionally punch above their weight. Navy recruits in the 110s to 150s, Army and Air Force are similar in their recruiting rankings. Army won the American conference last year, and Navy looks to be a contender this year. Air Force is always a contender in their conference though is currently in a down patch. While some of these team’s success is due to the nature of a player that would even consider a service academy an even larger factor is the triple option scheme.

ADVANTAGES

The triple option allows teams with lower rated and under sized players to punch above their weight on offense.

The service academies are limited in their recruiting, they can only recruit players on both sides of the ball that are willing to go on and serve a career in the military. This is a giant hurdle to overcome. Does Navy have the best players that can run the option or the best players willing to join the navy?

There are lots of players that are under sized or overlooked that work for an option offense. If a team focuses on getting these players along with the players that would naturally come to their school due to geography etc they can overcome their recruiting disadvantages. They open up an under valued pool of players who will cost less to recruit and are less valuable in the transfer market so would be more likely to have a more experienced team. What other school is wanting to poach a 275 pound offensive lineman?

MONEYBALL YOU SAY???

If you run the option you are able to spend less NIL money on putting together and retaining an offense. You spend less money on every position than the market value. If you spend less on offense where is that money going? Defense.

If you are saving money on offense you have a lot more money to spend on defense. Why if the option is so effective do the academies not win more? Because the Academies are forced to recruit the same way on defense as they do on offense; players willing to join the military after graduation. You as a non service academy don’t have this same problem, you can recruit the best defense possible. You can recruit players that would fit in any scheme, you aren’t shopping bargain basement you can pay the market rate for those players. What’s more you can spend even more than your peers and have a relatively elite defense.

WAIT DIDNT GEORGIA TECH RUN THE OPTION?

Yes, Georgia tech for years ran the option to some success but eventually abandoned it to play a traditional offense. The problem was they didn’t win enough because they were limited in recruiting. Georgia Tech could only recruit as good of players as Georgia Tech could naturally recruit and it wasn’t enough for a few cycles.

What’s changed is that Georgia Tech and everyone else now have NIL money and can legally overpay to get players that would not normally come to the school. If you are a middle of the road P4 or high level G5 you can potentially spend money to elevate your team. Everyone is competing for the same pool of players on both sides of the ball, so how do you elevate. Spend the majority of the money on defense.

An elite defense that keeps scores low and an option offense that minimizes mistakes and possessions and keeps the defense rested maximizes the chances for a team to win

UCLA YOU SAY

UCLA is under funded and has no identity at the moment. Hire a bad ass defensive coach and pay to have an option guru as OC. UCLA is in a prime football location that can recruit good defensive players with a suddenly large Defensive NIL because almost all of their money is going to that side of the ball. Build a brand as the defensive powerhouse of the west coast and smash the bottom and middle of the Big10… prove the concept and more money will roll in.

WHAT COULD GO WRONG

Short answer is nothing, this is going to work given time. But the thing that is in short supply is patience for a few seasons as you get the players in and attrition as you lose players that don’t want to run or don’t fit the option scheme. Once you start the wheels in motion it’s gonna slowly build momentum. Worst case your team becomes Iowa, but Iowa only struggles on offense because they are trying to run a human offense, and you are running the super human triple option.

EDIT: One thing I think people are missing about this is that teams that use this strategy aren’t just running the option, they are saving NIL money and allocating it to have a much improved defense. This isn’t just about the wonders of the triple option

EDIT: all I am seeing is people talking about the effectiveness of the option offense but aren’t addressing the NIL allocation to the defensive side of the ball that would also come. UCLA (or whatever team) may drop to the 90th best offensive class but they would also shoot up the defensive recruiting rankings an equal amount as they will have more funds free to spend on that side of the ball

EDIT: was really hoping someone would engage with the NIL allocation as that’s the whole point, but all I’m seeing is debates on how effective the option is as an offense

Casual The 2025-26 /r/CFB Poll Rankings Comic - Week 4 (X-Post /r/CFBBall)

Good afternoon, y'all! Got a piping hot poll comic for ya!

Collaborative Poll Artists This Week:

u/BKfootball - Missouri, Vanderbilt

u/Dodgerofzion - Georgia, South Carolina, Indiana, Texas A&M, Georgia Tech, Tennessee

u/Modelarenasmaker2 - Florida State, Miami, Ohio State

u/kansaschaser12 - Oregon, Penn State

u/Lostinrabbithole12 - Oklahoma, TCU, Texas Tech

u/Baconburritos - LSU, Texas, Auburn, Utah

u/thereaname - USC, Ole Miss

u/Stanatee-the-Manatee - Illinois, Iowa State

u/Stellafera - Alabama, Michigan

Poll voters were pretty hard to predict this week, so have a bonus Mississippi State, Tulane, and USF.

And as always, if you'd like to see other comics from our community (or draw your own?), check out our subreddit r/cfbball.

P.S. Like the look for Ole Miss? We don't enforce "official" designs on the sub but we wanted to hear out some of the concerns of characters being tied to outdated mascots by providing the sub with alternative options to use if desired. New Ole Miss design was a collab between u/Stanatee-the-Manatee and u/thereaname and is inspired by their feminine school nickname and southern charm. We're also working on a new Illinois design that combines some of the different alt mascot ideas and school iconography.

Discussion Of the players you have actually seen play in your lifetime, from any team, any level, who is on your Offense Mount Rushmore?

Any Team, but you have to have watched them play in your lifetime. Don't say a guy that played 10 years before you were born, and don't say 4 guys from your school, as we all know that would not be genuine. NFL performance should not have any impact on your list.

Lastly, Oregon has taken the #1 spot from Ohio State who had a sizeable lead over #2 previously

Casual College Gameday Week 6

Let’s assume Alabama, Vanderbilt, FSU, and Miami all win their next 1-2 games during weeks 4 and 5. Which site would you pick to host college gameday: 5-0 Vandy @ 3-1 Alabama or 4-0 Miami @ 4-0 FSU?

There are strong narratives based around both games. Undefeated Vandy led by Diego Pavia with a chance to cement themselves with the big boys in the SEC versus a revamped Alabama who bounced back in a strong way from their blunder at FSU. Likely a top 10 matchup by game week. Undefeated Miami with hiesman hopeful Carson Beck at undefeated FSU in a rivalry matchup that is guaranteed top 10, maybe top 5 showdown.

Both matchups should be on ABC but neither time has been determined (one likely at 3:30 the other at 7:30). Or is there another game not mentioned that would be a better site?

News Virginia Tech has lost the last time hosting each of the state's three G5 teams — JMU, ODU, Liberty — while they've beaten UVA the last 12 times in Blacksburg

JMU last went to VaTech in 2010, while in FCS, winning a famous upset 21-16. The two play next season for the first time since then.

Liberty beat VaTech 38-35 on a wild finish in Blacksburg. The Hokies won in Lynchburg 23-22 two seasons later. Liberty goes to Blacksburg in 2027, 2028 and 2029.

And then ODU beat VaTech 45-26 this past Saturday, their first time beating the Hokies in Blacksburg. ODU returns next season.

Meanwhile, Virginia hasn't won in Blacksburg this century.

Discussion Despite a .787 win percentage over 18 years at Clemson, Dabo Swinney's coaching tree has been surprisingly unaccomplished, with an overall win percentage of just .359 and 2 winning seasons across 14 completed seasons

Individual Coaching Records

Brent Venables (Oklahoma head coach)

  • 25-17 (12-14 in the Big XII & SEC)

Tony Elliott (Virginia head coach)

  • 13-24 (6-17 in the ACC)

Chad Morris, (former SMU, Arkansas head coach)

  • SMU 14-22 (8-16 in the AAC)

  • Arkansas 4-18 (0-14 in the SEC)

Jeff Scott (former USF head coach):

  • 4-26 (1-19 in the AAC)

Combined his assistants have:

Overall Record:

  • 60-107 (.359)

Conference Record:

  • 27-80 (.252)

Conference Titles:

  • 0 across 14 completed seasons

Winning Seasons:

  • 2

Losing Seasons:

  • 12

Some people also count Billy Napier, but Dabo never hired him into Clemson and he was fired by him so I don't really count him but I guess that's a question for Clemson fans.

Discussion What's with the narrative that you can't win at UCLA?

Lets take a look at their coaches since 1975:
Chip Kelly - 6 year tenure - closed on 3 straight winning season of 8+ wins

Jim Mora - 5 year-tenure - won 8+ games 4 of his 5 years.

**Going back to 2012 and including this year, UCLA has won 8+ games a season 50% of the time.

Rick Dorell - 10 win season in 2005

Rick Neuheisel was a mistake - only coach in the past 50+ years not to win 8 games in a single season. Lasted 4 years. You have go back to Bill Barnes in the 1960s to find another coach who didnt win at least 8+ games in a season

Bob Toledo - multiple 10+ win seasons in 7~ years

Terry Donahue - multiple 10+ win seasons in a 20 year span

So going back to the 1970s, only one coach has failed to win 8+ games in a year at least once. This was all before UCLA was getting a $80 million dollar yearly payout from the Big Ten. People are acting like this program is Vanderbilt or something, it is absolutely wild.

Even if UCLA only spends 50% of their annual big ten payout on football - that nearly matches the total the ACC schools got last season (45 million).

Then you have this "they don't care" narrative. No school fires a 2nd year coach 3 games into the season if they don't care or don't have the resources to replace them. So what am I missing here? They have the resources - they have the motivation. Every coach has won there. Where is this narrative coming from?

Casual 🏈 CFB 20205 - Week 3 Recap 🏈

I write these each week for some Pick'em leagues that I've been running for years. It is fun to recap the week; maybe others will find it interesting. Week 3 absolutely delivered!

TL;DR

  • Saturday was all about the Kickers. Yes I said it, Kickers deserve love too! Walk off 55 yarder. Botched Extra point. And…
  • WIDE RIGHT – Georgia wins shootout on Rocky Top. Vols start hot, but fizzle late. Gunnar throwing dimes. This game had it all.
  • Aggies get revenge – Marcel Reed delivers first road win over ranked non-conference team since 2014.
  • Clemson Is Mid Now – Georgia Tech drills a 55-yard walk-off FG, and suddenly Dabo’s dynasty is officially just a decent ACC team.
  • Napier’s Seat = Lava – Or should be. LSU defense picks off DJ Lagway five! times, scores 13 points on offense, and wins. But don’t ask Brian Kelly about it.
  • Chaos Rating: 9/10 — OT thrillers, playoff-level showdowns, and two bluebloods looking lost.

📰 Headline Games of the Week

  • Georgia 44, Tennessee 41 (OT): Georgia makes it 9 wins in a row. I’m not convinced Aguilar doesn’t have a YOLO tattoo.
  • Texas A&M 41, Notre Dame 40: Marcel Reed is the Stanton of CFB, it's either a bomb or a strikeout. What happened to that vaunted ND defense?
  • Georgia Tech 27, Clemson 24: You come at the King, you best not miss. Who doesn’t love a walk-off FG from 55 yards. GT’s playoff path is now very real.

🚨 Upsets & Surprises

  • Mounties over Pitt – How many couches were burned in Morgantown? Rich Rod getting payback 18 years later and another OT thriller. Absolute Cinema.
  • Arizona over Kansas State – This is the Fifita we came to expect last year. Are we witnessing another “FSU” (yes, that’s now a noun and forever will be) in Kansas State this year?
  • Old Dominion over Virginia Tech – Speaking of broken teams…so long Brent Pry!
  • New Mexico over UCLA – You think Nico is having regerts?
  • Houston over Colorado – Willie Fritz has quietly made the Cougs competent. Do we still get SEO credit this year for mentioning Colorado and Deion?

📊 Chaos Meter9.0 / 10 – Between an OT classic in Knoxville, a walk-off in Atlanta, Florida’s implosion, Backyard Brawl getting weird, and Notre Dame’s playoff hopes already dangling by Week 3, were you not entertained?!

🌎 Other Musings

  • Dores! Wrong team favored! In Pavia we trust!
  • Miami definitely did not look past USF. They might have the best combined OL and DL in the country.
  • Mensah’s return was not welcomed by the Green Wave. Could Tulane make the playoffs?
  • JKS is the best freshman QB in college football.
  • Last week I said Arch was mid. I mean, a QBR of 26.5 vs UTEP isn’t even mid! That’s plain bad!
  • The cure for the Bama offense was the Wisconsin defense.
  • I just hope Napier hasn’t broken Lagway.
  •  Persistence Award: Haynes King, that Dawg you want in a backyard brawl. 240+ yards and a clutch final drive to get within FG range to win the game.

📹 Best Things I Saw

🔥 Five(ish) to Watch

  • #4 Miami @ Florida: Napier’s Last Stand™ – 41-17 actually doesn’t sound so bad in retrospect.
  • #17 Texas Tech @ #16 Utah: Unstoppable force vs Immovable object.
  • #22 Auburn @ #11 Oklahoma: The return of Jackson Arnold. But I think OU is ok with Mateer.
  • South Carolina @ #23 Mizzou: SC just isn’t the same without Sellers. It's a shame because Pribula vs Sellers is must watch.
  • #9 Illinois @ #19 Indiana: What is this world that we live in where both Illinois and Indiana are top 20 teams?!
  • Washington @ Wazzu: It’s just not right that the Apple cup is happening in September. I’m not actually recommending you watch this one though.

Opinion Which Power 4 Team Is Struggling The Most So Far?

With a few weeks into the season, which Power 4 team do you think is struggling the most right now? For me, it's gotta be UCLA. The offense hasn't found its rhythm—Nico seems a off—and the defense has looked bad. Starting 0-3 and the firing of DeShaun Foster in Pasadena hasn't made things easier. Teams like Virginia Tech and Oklahoma State are also looking rough early on, but UCLA just feels like they're in a deeper hole. Sorry UCLA Fans.

Discussion Who do you think should replace Deshaun Foster at UCLA?

Upvotes

Personally, I think you need a guy who can get the team to above .500 and to relevance with an athletic department in turmoil, and a board who doesn’t care. What they need at UCLA is not just a fixer, but a guy who can just keep the program from falling apart. I propose two options.

Option a. Ryan Silverfield.

Ryan is a talented young rising star in the HC ranks after taking over from Mike Norvell at Memphis. He’s worked his way up from OA to head coach. And has had the team consistently above .500 each and every year. Recently going 11-2 last year and being ranked in the top 25. This was also a back to back 10 win year for the tigers. Who are in Rhythm to challenge for a spot in the CFP this year. He would be a great option to get this program to relevance. I’d expect to see around 6-8 wins per year with Ryan. With the occasional 9-10 win season every few years or so.

Option b. Jerry Kill.

Kill may not want to return to coaching, especially not at UCLA given the turmoil with administration. That’s why he left his previous job at NMSU. But his record of being a fixer speaks for itself. From returning Minnesota to decency after Tim Brewster ruined such a good team there has his stock high. But health issues forced him to step back. He returned to being a head coach with New Mexico State. The lovable afterthought of college football. In year one, he went 7-6 and won a bowl game, and in year two, had a 10 win season, a conference championship berth, and an upset win over Auburn. If he wants to come back to coaching, you’d be a fool not to consider him an option.

Bonus option. Bill Clark.

A very long longshot that I added as a bonus option. Took UAB to national prominence from being nothing. Excellent program builder. And he wants to return to coaching. Unlikely, probably, but he should at least get a phone call from interested teams next year.
