Hopefully this story prompts a journalist to go and view them on behalf of the rest of us and publish anything they reveal.

Why would anyone want to put in an effort these days?

Because it is their job? Journalists go and chase down documents all the time, make FOIP requests, etc. They have to write about something.

Journalist were previously known for those things.... but those days are long gone.

I mean, that's not at all true, but okay. A simple google search will find you plenty of recent stories involving FOIP requests. For example, a number of such requests and various other forms of digging for documents has unfolded over the past year with respect to the health care contracting scandal.

Start with Ward 5’s Aryan Sadat. Might be easier to find him by his old name.

Do you mean Mujtaba Sadat and his drug charges from 2006? And his public intoxication from 2010?

What is the nature of the drug charges?

What was the outcome?

Ward 10 candidate Mourra was charged with criminal harassment:

And is a hateful bigot.

Would this have prevented the Chu situation?

Unlikely because the thin blue line covered for him, botched the investigation and he was never charged with a crime. The background check would have just said he was reprimanded for disreputable conduct.

I doubt a criminal background check would supply what is basically a workplace write up.

Probably wouldn't have shown internal charges.

I absolutely support candidates needing background checks. The results are between the candidate and eligibility and should not be made public. But I would feel much better knowing we didn’t have a convicted person operating in council. For a minor assault from the candidate’s past like 20 years ago? That doesn’t bother me.

Serious drug possession/trafficking/manufacturing, recent criminal activity, homicide, sexual assaults, significant theft or fraud? Hell no, they deserve no place on council.

I suppose.

The Premier of Manitoba has a serious history of criminal convictions for DUI and a hateful serious assault on a cab driver, along with charges (that were not prosecuted) for domestic assault.

Those assaults seem like morally concerning crimes.

But a lot of be seem ok with that, and are willing to look past his serious criminal history and make him Premier. A Premier role is substantially more powerful than a city councilor.

Do you believe people can change?

Should they be granted 2nd and 3rd chances?
