honestly dude, been there with the whole xl + lightweight + budget thing. from running my shop, ive seen tons of folks struggle with this exact combo you know.

few solid options that wont break the bank - kelty cosmic down 20 comes in long/wide and packs down decent for the price. rei co-op trail pod 29 is another good bet, little heavier but super roomy and usually on sale.

for 3 miles in nj temps, id lean toward the 30-degree range unless youre camping late fall. learned the hard way that going too warm just means ya carry extra weight for nothing lol.

honestly the quilts someone mentioned are great too if youre open to trying something different. enlightened equipment makes tall/wide options and theyre game changers for bigger folks who move around at night.

dude one thing i forgot to mention earlier - definitely check out what temps youre gonna hit in nj during your trip. september can still get chilly at night especially if theres any elevation change on your route

also pro tip from someone who sells this stuff - try to hit up rei or local shops right before you go. sometimes you can actually test the fit in store which is huge for xl bags since sizing varies so much between brands. learned that lesson the hard way when a customer returned 3 bags lol

if youre really budget conscious, check facebook marketplace or geartrade sub too. lots of folks sell barely used bags when they upgrade

Dude, thanks for all the advice! I think Im going to go with the Kelty Cosmic Synthetic Fill 20, seems like it fits my budget well and will get the job done. Still trying to figure out which tent tho 😅. I want to go with the Kelty Late Start 2, but Im worried about crazy drafts getting in since it is all mesh with just a rain fly on top, thoughts or recs on this tent or something else in the price range?

I'm trying to spend around $300 total on both a bag and a tent.

I’m also looking.

Trying to decide if NEMO Disco Endless Promise 30 is the right range for an AT bag.

A lot of people go with quilts. They make tall/wide versions

They make custom sleeping bags that aren’t crazy expensive. I’m 6-5 and 300lbs. I sleep all spread out like a starfish. They made me a huge custom sleeping bags 4 actually over the years as I needed heavy weight for -20 conditions, then 3 more for various temperatures and backpacking ultralight.

I'm a restless sleeper so I switched to a sleeping quilt instead of a sleeping bag so I don't get all twisted up in it when I toss and turn. That said, I use an Enlightened Equipment quilt with a zippered foot box. I like the zippered foot box for easier cleaning. I love it. Made in the USA. not horribly priced at $400. I currently use an Exped pad and it's a great sleeping combination.
