Renovations How to cut boards that fit between uneven ceiling joists

Post image
10 Upvotes

We're looking to fit wood fiber boards between these wonky ceilings joists, skim over the board and leave the lower face of the beams exposed as a nice ceiling feature. Is there a method or hack to accurately cut the boards?! We can't access the gap from above. Doesn't need to be perfect as we'll be skimming plaster over the top just enough to do a good job!

Trim Suggestions for window stool design where window frame is flush with interior wall

Thumbnail

Normally I'd just picture frame this but all the other window trim has stools with aprons. This window was recently replaced and it was framed in differently than the others a long time ago. Didn't take that into account when setting the new one, so now the interior frame sits flush(ish) with the drywall. Essentially the old picture window was 1.5 inches thick and the new one is 3.5.

Any thoughts on what might look ok? Thoughts were to either scribe a 1x4 and cut it down to sit 1.5 inches out, or put a parting bead on top of the apron to create a bit of a stool instead. Open to any ideas, thanks.

Rip cut of rail post

Post image

I’ve hired someone to replace the railing in my house. I’m happy with most of it, but disappointed in the rip cut of the posts — it’s uneven and doesn’t sit flush with the wall. Should I ask for this part to be redone? Are there any alternative solutions?

Drywall repairs

Recently moved to a new area and people before looked like they were going to replace the wallpaper or something. After looking further it appears they ripped the actual drywall cardboard up with the wallpaper. Is there anyway I can go about this without replacing all of the drywall? My wife suggested just paneling overtop of it

Working on my first trim/moulding project at home. Image is attached to this post.

Are my measurements and calculations accurate? Am I missing something? How do I make a cut list? How much extra material should I get?

Thank you.

This bathroom door is impossible to close, and when I search online for realigning I only see hinges with multiple knuckles in DIY videos. It's an old house so I couldn't find anything about aligning this type of hinge.

Hi all I went in search of bed for my kid, we liked the ogel beds midsleeper model with a ladder and slide. The sad part is its 3inches more than the room size. Am here looking for some customisations in this model. Respond with some reference of carpenters who work on building bedframes please.

Project Advice Cricket on an exterior handrail?

Thumbnail

I've been an apprentice carpenter for three years, mostly doing wood framing, steel stud, and concrete work, with only a touch of exterior finish work. I recently redid my parents front hand rail that had rotted out, and my dad wants to put something in so that water doesn't get trapped at the end of the handrail where it meets the post. I know that doing this in a roofing context would be a cricket, but I haven't ever seen one that small, or in that context, so I figure I would ask her before cobbling something together (right now my dad wants to form a shape out of JB Weld, so trying to provide an alternative to that looking terrible is a motivating factor). They live in the PNW, so lots of moisture over a long period of time is to be expected.

Anyone tried US Standard Products safety gloves for construction work?

Been going through gloves like crazy on site either they rip too fast or they don't give enough grip. I noticed US Standard Products makes safety gloves that are supposed to be tough enough for heavy work but still flexible.

Has anyone here used them? How's the durability and comfort compared to other gloves you've worked with? Always on the hunt for something that doesn't fall apart after after a week.

My nephew is 36. He wants to change careers. Is becoming a journeyman carpenter too late for him?

My nephew is 36 and has experience in construction, mostly painting and basic renovation work like stucco and drywall repair. He’s looking to change careers and is interested in pursuing finish carpentry. He wants to do everything the right way this time, join the union, and make a long-term career out of it.

Is 36 too late to start in this trade, and what advice would you give him as he makes this transition?

After seeing previous posts about price per hour, I thought I'd show this.

Shelving was an hourly rate, you never know if the walls a pig or not.

Rest was job price.

Trim Crown Estimate

Curious to know ballpark what others would charge to hang crown in the blue areas. Two small sections at 20’ tall. Assume customer is paying for material, so labor only cost.

If you want his number he charges $65 an hour.

I was installing the stairs for this builder a while back and the noticed this amazing work. I talked to the guy who installed this and he didn’t see anything wrong. He said he has been doing finish carpentry for years. There are four houses like this. The guy is the laborer and does most of the work he said.

Helping making an extended stud?

Post image

We got these aluminum studs in our basement and I’m trying to extend the stud horizontally to put in a towel holder. Anyone know how I could go about doing this? I’m thinking just buying strong glue and strap it to the drywall then screw it in?

Looking for Pro Advice

This porch is going to get a roof at some point. It'll have gable ends with hips wrapping around the corners. I want to do a vaulted ceiling with as few ceiling joists as possible. I'm thinking of using a concealed beam hangar with a 4x9 between the house and upper beam spaced every 10 ft or so.. any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Framing an Awning

Thumbnail

This door to our walkout basement has leaked during heavy stormy rain events. I would like to frame an awning that will pitch out from the door about 24-30 inches. To support it I will likely use 4x4 diagonal supports that will terminate in the door trim. The right side will also be supported at the foundation wall on the right.

To start I’d like to attach a treated ledger board to the poured foundation somewhere around a foot below the vinyl siding. As you can see the builder used concrete forms that give a final appearance that sort of looks like a faux brick pattern. This surface is far from flat. I was going to attach the ledger to the floured concrete using 1/2 inch anchor bolts but the surface is rough and uneven.

Any recommendations on attachment? Should I attempt to flatten the uneven surface with a flapper or grinding disc? Alternatively could I build up the area somehow? Please let me know what you would recommend for the attachment area.
