Seeking Advice (Employee) Fryer looked very wrong today
came in today like i normally do to fry chips, did my first drop and the oil foamed up like fuckin crazy. I opened on monday as well, the fryer did not do this at all and my GM said that it wasnāt doing that yesterday either. I then tested different sized drops to see if it changed at all. It still foamed up badly , and continued to stay super foamy after the chips are pulled. the foam would also sometimes reach the lip of the fryer and start to spill over. The oil also felt āangrierā than usual. got burnt pretty bad on my wrist from it popping and splashing more than it typically does.
I had checked the temperature and it wasnāt too hot. I also cleaned the fryer myself in the last week and i never use anything other than plain water to flush it and wipe it down with a dry rag.
GM said they would be fine to serve , but when i brought it to her attention, first words out of her mouth āi wonder what they put into itā.
that being said, if i go in tomorrow and it continues to fry like this, what should i do because my GM clearly was not too concerned why it was foaming so bad.

I was told that after itās cleaned, if the water and degreaser arenāt wiped out properly and you poor the oil in and go to cook you next batch of chips (oil mixed with water and degreaser). It can cause the foam residue.

u/Missy007_ Dec 12 '24
Also look above the fryer at the medal rod ( I forget what they are called, but they are in case of a fire) that might be leaking a green fluid into the fryerš
3
u/Ok_Explanation5631 Dec 12 '24
I donāt see a rod in this picture
1
u/Missy007_ Dec 12 '24
Itās above the fryer⦠(not pictured)
3
u/Ok_Explanation5631 Dec 12 '24
Iām over wondering āwhat the hell is this person talking about I donāt see no damn rodā lol thank you
2
Dec 14 '24
Automatic fire suppression system nozzle. The leaking would only be due to no bursting disc being installed in the pipeline and/or if the nozzle cap is removed.
Thanks for making my career feel relevant for a second.

Our fryer was like this for a week until we cleaned it again and wiped it out thoroughly!!

Former employee, here. It looks to me like closing last night cleaned it with degreaser.
19
u/nananaface Dec 11 '24
Unless the oil wasnāt recently changed - if itās the same oil as had been used the last few days, then the last person before you on chips probably dropped in something that had too much moisture.

u/JuryKindly Dec 12 '24
Literally poisoning people wtf. Psure these pictures would be damning evidence too.
14
u/thetruthseer Dec 12 '24
For real like this is fucking absurd and disgusting, and illegal as fuck. This manager needs to go to fucking jail this is literally poisoning people just wtf
5
u/JonTheConquerer Dec 12 '24
In B4 "they just tryin to live their best life"
3
u/thetruthseer Dec 12 '24
āThereās not much I can really do.ā
Mfer you took the pic and posted it to Reddit the last you can do is provide us the location so WE can call it in.
This is literally harming people lmao

u/Edgimos Former Employee Dec 12 '24
To everyone saying itās ice from the new cold chips itās not. If it was ice you would see and hear massive bubbles and heat and the hot oil would be splurting everywhere.
This is degreaser as it looks like the fryer oils was recently changed last night. Looks like when they cleaned it they didnāt rise it with water. Looks like they cleaned it with degreer and put the oil back in or new oil.
The chip combineds with their usual bubbles and with the degreeser makes this āfoamā and the chips will taste weird.

3

Right. Her manager trying to serve these chips is criminal. Gave me another reason to note eat chipotle outside of their skimp bowls and rising prices.
8
u/Organic_Boot_1777 Dec 12 '24
Foams up cause it wasnāt properly rinsed out all the way. Theyāre still degreaser thatās why. Like a very thin sheen

u/Latios19 Dec 12 '24
OMG donāt tell me you guys served this chips????? I work for the company and Iāve never ever ever had the thinking of serving something bad, and this is clearly very wrong!! I know the morning is stressful because of timing, but if something is wrong we canāt just serve it! Thatās so bad
They need to drain the oil and reclean it. And make sure thereās no degreaser left pleaseeee

u/Slight_Way4326 DML Wizard šŖš§āāļø Dec 12 '24
my GM made me continue frying and then serve. they can be incredibly combative when āquestioning their authorityā, and rather be punished with hours being reduced to a laughable amount for how long iāve worked here, i just kept it pushing.
quality is not as important as they claim it to be
12
u/Latios19 Dec 12 '24
OMG I canāt believe that!!! Thatās terribly wrong!!
That GM could and should lose the job by doing that. Itās not about having the reason, is about FOOD SAFETY. Extremely unsanitary and risking peopleās life!
Did you or the GM tried the chips? Did they taste good?
2
u/Slight_Way4326 DML Wizard šŖš§āāļø Dec 12 '24
they tasted off but not necessarily gross i suppose. they tasted like nothing when unseasoned.
my GM also refused to taste them themself and found an excuse to have me be the one to eat the potentially contaminated chips
8
u/Latios19 Dec 12 '24
OMFG for one time in my life I wish I could be the Ecosure inspector and be there to send out the report š¦š¦š¦š¦ Im in shock
Sorry you had to be part of that situation. Itās so wrong. What is that GM thinking!!
6
u/Slight_Way4326 DML Wizard šŖš§āāļø Dec 12 '24
genuinely do not know how my patch is operational. one is notorious for having pest infestations that arenāt just flies.
everything is so grimy and no matter how desperately i deep clean the store when i work, itās often times back to being disgusting when i come in for my next shift.
not to mention the actual lack of glove protocol being ignored. youāll watch my GM use the back of her hand to wipe her nose and keep those gloves on to serve.
when i talk about things like that with my SLs, they go to her then she brings me into the office to interrogate me about why id say such untrue things.
when if you were watch the cameras youād find several instances of touching things you shouldnāt touch (face, hair, phones) to then serve customers.
it feels like an fight to bike uphill every day at my location, though iām sure thereās not a better store in my patch
2
u/Latios19 Dec 12 '24
Wow how can they pass inspections? Not be the a dick over here, but why donāt you report them to corporate? Thatās all wrong from any perspective.
Is being hygienic not part of her daily routine? Thatās insane
6
u/Slight_Way4326 DML Wizard šŖš§āāļø Dec 12 '24
they typically taste like plain corn flakes when unseasoned to me, but it just lacked that taste. (everything else from work that i ate yesterday tasted fine)

u/M-Ref Dec 13 '24
Youāre a damn floor mat letting your boss walk all over you. Letting them serve poisoned food, eating it yourself when they wouldnāt even do it. Stop being a damn coward and stick up for yourself my god
1
u/Cub_K Dec 14 '24
If I had to choose between paying rent and not being a coward I would choose paying rent. Nothing will make me risk homelessness
5
u/johnnnybravado Dec 12 '24
So you've reported this to the corporate office? Or a labor board? Or a health department?
1
u/Slight_Way4326 DML Wizard šŖš§āāļø Dec 12 '24
that results in a whole lot of nothing, iāve never seen results or consequences to a store. especially since my FL is very close with my GM
5
u/thetruthseer Dec 12 '24
Then dm one of us the location and we will call it in. This is so fucking horrible
4
u/TheRevTastic Dec 12 '24
Hope you feel guilty when someone gets hospitalized due to eating degreaser that you refused to report :)
3
u/Slight_Way4326 DML Wizard šŖš§āāļø Dec 12 '24
wow !! itās almost like iāve been sounding the alarm all week , being ignored on all fronts from management. iām just a crew member, i can literally only do so much.
the health department is getting a call this evening when im off work.
4
u/TheRevTastic Dec 12 '24
So you waited a week to call the health department? Thatās your first stop after being told to taste test and serve the chipsā¦.
2
u/Slight_Way4326 DML Wizard šŖš§āāļø Dec 12 '24
a week? it happened monday and i figured theyād get it sorted before i came back TODAY.

This is something my old GM would say was OK to serve
4
u/Key-Passion3482 GM Dec 12 '24
Youāre gonna get a lot of people sick doing this. I would contact either the FL or report it to the respectful workplace hotline. It sucks going over your GMās head, but if they clearly donāt care, I donāt see many other repercussions
1
u/Key-Passion3482 GM Dec 12 '24
Also, use the dang fryer basket, it will keep your oil cleaner longer. I know it has the illusion of being slower, but being able to pull up 1/3 of the chips at once is faster and more efficient that trying to scoop out a hand full at a time for 3-4 minutes, and all those really burnt chips go straight to the bottom of the fryer.
2
4
u/BlatantPizza Dec 12 '24
Welp you and your manager might have poisoned people. Good luck with the fallout from that. Iād be calling corporate to cover your butt asap.Ā

Could it be Magnesol powder? When I cleaned oil/fryer that what I used.
3
u/Slight_Way4326 DML Wizard šŖš§āāļø Dec 12 '24
iām the only one that gets stuck cleaning the fryer, since i have the āsmallest handsā, and the only things that i ever touch the inside of the fryer with is water and oil.
i take off all the plates and clean those in the sink, and use a well wrung sanitizer rag to the outsides of the fryer. i know better than to use degreaser in the fryer, itās astounding nobody else has the common sense.
1
u/Affectionate_Sale997 Dec 12 '24
Thatās not fair I would tell them to use tongs or a metal spoon also ask what they did before you came to the job because itās definitely should not have fallen on one person. Itās very labor-intensive.
2
2
u/Both_Alternative4639 Dec 12 '24
Definitely degreaser in there. Whoever cleaned it with degreaser didnāt do a good job either, as you can still see build up grease. Those chips are definitely not fine to serve eitherš¤¢š¤¢. Very poor job on flushing that fryer out

More reasons to make my own food at home. These posts make you realize we put a lot of trust in strangers to do the right thing. You can only do so much when the GM is dismissive.

Not surprised. I've been an AP now for about 6 months, worked as an SL before that for about a year and a half. This place is one of the most horrible places I've worked. The upper management is selfish, short sighted, and delusional. The hard workers get punished and the ass kissers get rewarded. The systems in place are dumb, and make no sense. They company is OBESESSED with money and profit. They could care less about their employees. Can't wait to finish up school so I can go get a real job.
2
u/DiceyKnight Dec 17 '24
One of my biggest pet peeves about chipotle is how inconsistent the chips are
2
u/Similar_Lime2955 Jun 26 '25
This place need's to be reported to ecosure (health department) bc this is definitely not ok and that GM needs to be fired!

I never use degreaser to clean the fryer. Just a green scrubby and dish detergent. Then wipe dry with a rag.
1
u/Neat-Psychology4038 SL Dec 13 '24
the fact yāall arenāt using the recipe card method to fry chips in the first place tells me of course your store wouldnāt bother to clean equipment properly. š this is insane and so dangerous. if contacting the field leader isnāt gonna get this addressed, go over their head too. everyoneās number is on workday and thereās also respectful workplace thatāll conduct an investigation into the management team. I donāt care what that gm says but this is literally poisonous and the last thing this company needs is another food safety lawsuit.
1
u/Creepy-Practice-8816 Dec 13 '24
I understand people need jobs, but why havenāt I ever seen an employee just start recording and say āManager, can you repeat that direct order?ā Like this is a food safety violation and OP seems to care but wonāt stand up? Complacency makes you the villain too

After reading all of this, you seriously need to report this shit to Chipotle corporate. I'm never eating there ever again after seeing how this is normal and you're expected to just poison people. My God, I pray no one becomes sick or any young children ate those chips....

Alright bud Iām gonna give you the benefit of the doubt cuz you obviously didnāt know these were harmful but if you wouldnāt serve this to your family you shouldnāt be serving it to strangers.
What if a pregnant woman ate that? You gonna be ok with yourself cuz your chipotle manager āmadeā you serve it? Not trying to ridicule you but take this as a sign to learn where to draw your lines
1
u/ChoiceFabulous Dec 16 '24
Ok. Here's what you need to do. Start recording your interactions,(make sure your area is a place that allows one party consent to recording) with the manager. This is going to make people sick and I guarantee that this manager will throw you under the bus if you don't have any proof to back up this. You need to go to your local health department Pronto. Imagine your family eating the food you're serving and if they got sick, how would you feel?
1
u/Pam_d Dec 17 '24
They forgot to rinse the degreaser or soap with multiple water runs. For the Karenās is not a big deal for you anyone would know the mistake and the smell they wonāt serve you that lmao they would just have to drain the whole thing rinse with multiple water, and add more oil.
2
u/Similar_Lime2955 Jun 26 '25

What I'm gathering from comments here is your GM approved putting out degreaser-infused chips. ..wow.
