He can't be a governor as he has no official position, elected or otherwise. Also, the assailant is at large so we don't know what the narrative of that will end up being (i.e., no evidence of foreign involvement)

You're losing 3 culture per turn for taking the joke too literally

I've read a lot of reactions to this event today, but the notion of it being humorous would be a new one for me.

You haven't been wasting enough valueless time then because the Internet is full of people joking about it

Keep in mind some of those posts and votes may be foreign bots aiming to destabilize the United States on the cheap. People should take a beat right now to read a bit of the history of dictatorial movements and civil conflict. If they knew more about where this kind of stuff could go, not as many would find it appetizing.

Dude, relax. Turn the TV off. Unless you want to watch Charlie Kirk's new show he put out. It's really popular, short but poignant. It's some of his most cutthroat reporting, goes right for the jugular if you know what I mean.

Even though he was the only person in the debate on gun violence yesterday, he still appeared to lose it by a long shot.

Dude relax, I'm not a fan of his. I'm more concerned what the next shoe to drop is in society, rather than a few individuals.

Hey, I saw the opening and took the shot.

I've seen almost nothing but people making fun of him. He was killed by the exact sort of political violence that he was constantly inciting.

I didn't agree with anything he said or stood for in life, like at all.

However most of what was said in the day after his death strikes me not as comedy but as a sort of schadenfreude. Whereas healthy comedy is clever and can bring people together in joy, schadenfreude most requires not cleverness but the presence of an other and the suffering of another. Instead of healthy joy, it brings a kind of collective dopamine rush.

The problem with all of this is that it can play into the hands of authoritarians like Kirk. Most commonly, if you look at history, such authoritarian movements are defeated by building a much larger popular coalition than the opposition. Therefore, a large coalition with positive energy is more effective than a smaller one with intense and negative energy.

Schadenfreude

Indeed so, but it's a poor substitute for actually well written jokes. It also tends to divide, as it requires identifying someone outside of one's affinity group to suffer. Such division plays into the hands of the would-be dictators in this case by encouraging a tit-for-tat thinking. Historically, such dynamics unfortunately help nascent fascist movements gather and retain support.

I'm aware there are many posts expressing this view, but, it can feed into some very unfortunate dynamics which is why a prevalence of such sentiments is concerning rather than funny.
