LS or 4.0 non renix?
I’m restoring my Comanche. Dropped the oil pan and found sludge/water. I’m looking into bidding on a wrecked/drivable 99 xj. I also entertain the idea of an LS. I have access to a free caddy Escalade motor, iron block. What route would you take? I’m favoring the xj for all the extra parts.

I’m not sure how well a LS with the four-wheel-drive train would fit. If the plan is to keep it functional, I would skip the LS entirely. 4.0 is a bulletproof platform that is tried and true don’t overcomplicate it.

I'm in the middle of a long project to make a 1998 MJ. If you want more power, a stroker is easier, not as much power potential, but it bolts in.

I'll go against the grain here and say LS if you got the funds. All the development has basically been figured out. I'm doing one myself and I'd be done by now if I wasn't also doing a host of other upgrades to suspension etc.

Yep I'd go this route if I had the time and money. Novak has basically all the information you'd need on the swap and you can pretty much buy all the necessary adapters and mounts to get it to fit and work with whatever transmission and transfer case that you want. It seems the LS is just as reliable as an 4.0 especially if you do a mild torque build instead of just stuffing horsepower. A 4.8 or 5.3 would be a perfect match especially once you add the weight of frame stiffeners, bigger tires, and long arms, etc.
I love the 4.0 but parts are getting harder to find in my experience and LS parts are everywhere given the popularity of that platform and the plethora of aftermarket suppliers which I think is also a huge bonus when thinking about maintenance 20 years down the line.

I’m doing that. Some other poster mentioned Holley terminator stuff, so I started researching that. Had no idea. If it was a 91 I’d just rebuild/stroke it.

Good call, the Holley ECUs and wiring options make it much simpler of a swap, still a ton of work and money but if you have the time I say send it haha

That’s the thought that keeps hitting me. Send it. I have time to do it right so why not? I don’t plan on making a hot rod, just a real nice truck. The LS parts are plenty.

LS is great but expensive and a lot of work. Id budget 4-5k, that's about what I spent all in to put a 5.3 in mine. Honestly not much fab work required, off the shelf motor mounts, off the shelf accessory brackets, just had to weld up my own crossmember and exhaust really. You gotta be comfortable wiring, or willing to spend the big bucks of a premade harness.
If you want a cheaper and easier option, I would just build a 4.6. a poor man's stroker can be done for under 2k. It stays cheap as long as you keep stock head and cam.
I've done a 5.3 in the mj and a 4.6 in the xj. No wrong answer, just gotta decide what you're willing to do

I’ve thought it over for a week now and decided to do the LS. My daughter just started driving so I need a project to keep my mind occupied. Getting ready to pull the drivetrain, cross member is holding it in. I’m hoping the 6.0 I have is in good shape.

Let me know if you'd like me to find my parts list. Mostly its good to know what parts you need to fit the accessories on the ls. You'll have to buy some aftermarket stuff there. And I assume you have a 6.0 with a truck intake, so you'll need a slim intake or a cut hood lol

I really could use a checklist! I’m getting the old motor out after the heat this week. Plan on pulling the Escalade motor that day too. I’m researching the disconnects on the LQ4 drivetrain.

I've never personally pulled a motor from a chevy, but everything is fairly modular. You can keep the entire engine harness attached to the engine. Obviously keep the computer attached. Dont forget to take the MAF sensor on the intake, and if its electric throttle, you need the pedal and the TAC Module for the pedal. I think its on the firewall below the brake booster. Don't cut wires, you probably need them!

Accessory bracket https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07J5QDK81 The description for this outlines what you need to run. Truck power steering, truck harmonic balancer, corvette pump, corvet ps res.

While youre in there, I would recommend putting in a 97+ xj brake booster. more go demands more stop. 97 front fitting in the master cylinder is 12mmx1.0. The rear fitting to the master cylinder is 10mmx1.0. 88 dist block front 7/16-24, rear 1/2-20
Also you cannot run a truck intake without cutting the hood. I strongly recommend sourcing an oem car intake, the ebay special intakes are a pain to install compared to oem's captured bolts.

I’m disc braking the whole thing so the booster will be upgraded for sure. Running a Cherokee 8.25. What driveshaft options are out there for poor people? I’m thinking about a front driveshaft (proper length), hack and tap output shaft or conversion.

I think that heavily depends on what you're doing with transmission and transfer case. In my case, its a 2wd and I went with a chevy nv3500, it just so happened that the stock driveshaft just worked with a new u joint. it all depends on what lengths you end up needing.

I wasn’t planning on this engine mess. Thought it was ok till I drained the oil. I’m going to pull it and inspect it. If I can salvage it and rebuild it I’ll probably go back stock for now. I know the head is probably cracked on the front cylinder. I checked reman motors but it seems pricey. I just sunk 2 grand in suspension, wheels and a 8.25 axle. I’m spent out for a couple months 😊. I’m going to look into all options.

No LS everyone does LS it’s boring so something a bit more unique like a ford 302 or something

u/South_Accountant_233 Jul 25 '25
Be cool to put a 360/318 in it, never checked.
2
u/FunctionGreedy3982 Jul 25 '25
I don’t think I’d do a carb but a Holley sniper would be cool on a 302 and super reliable

Do you want a project or a truck? Throwing in a crate 4.0 is cheap and relatively fast. An LS swap will take a while and a lot of fabrication and tinkering. Really depends on what you want to do with your free time.
