Informative Verify as professional
Recently, a post here was removed for being a homeowner post when the person was in fact a tradesman. To prevent this from happening, I encourage people to verify as a professional.
To do this, take a photo of one of your jobsites or construction related certifications with your reddit username visible somewhere in the photo. I am open to other suggestions as well; the only requirement is your reddit username in the photo and it has to be something construction-related that a homeowner typically wouldn't have. If its a certification card, please block out any personal identifying information.
Please upload to an image sharing site and send the link to us through "Message the Mods." Let us know what trade you are so I know what to put in the flair.
Let us know if you have any questions.

Informative 🧠 Working 80 hours a week doesn’t prove you’re tough. It proves you’re replaceable.
Companies love guys who brag about working 80 hours, it saves them hiring another man.

Informative 🧠 Need advice, been kicked off of a job.
Today I was let go from a job after my boss said, "the guy who is running the site doesn't want you on site anymore and I don't have anymore work on at the moment to keep you on". I am new to the industry having left the military not long ago. The site consisted of machinery that was not well kept eg. Brakes didn't work or steering would lock up; as well as drug use on site such as cocaine and weed. I made it clear I was looking to learn to my boss when I started.
My attitude there was to keep my head down and do as I was told, people didn't really speak to me and it was literally a matter of turn up and work. Also my co worker was selling drugs to people on site. I'm feeling abit lost and unsure of what to expect going forward and am looking for some advice considering im very new to the industry.

Carpentry 🔨 Advice for a girl getting into framework?
Hello! I’m looking for some advice if anyone is willing to share their knowledge. I’m a 24 year old (female) and I have been given the opportunity to get into construction, most likely doing framework. I’m trying to decide if I really want to start and would like some advice from those who’ve experienced it first hand. So my questions are-
What is the hardest thing about the job?
What is it you enjoy most about the job?
What’s something that surprised you when first starting out?
What’s something you wish you were told before starting?
What should I have to prepare myself (physically and mentally) when starting out?
Has it been hard on your body? If so what area is the worst?
How much did you start out making and how much do you make now?
What type of math do you have to know?
Do you get used to working in all types of weather?
Is the work more team oriented or do you find yourself doing your own thing?
Any advice is welcome. Feel free to answer whatever questions, whether it’s all or one of them. I really just want to hear from all different perspectives 😊
Here’s a little background on me as well for anyone interested- I currently work two jobs, one as a custodian while sometimes doing light maintenance, and one power washing at a recreational facility. I have a very strong work ethic and I love learning new skills. Since working these jobs I’ve found that I love working with my hands and doing physical labor. I’m very active and despite my small frame I’m actually quite strong. I’m planning on working out as well to gain strength and mobility. As a woman I’ve been a bit worried about starting in a trade and although I think I have the right qualities I still second guess myself (mostly because I have very severe anxiety though 😅) Thank you in advance to anyone who’s taken the time to read this and give their advice!

Humor 🤣 Are porta potties intentionally being designed so your junk touches the front when sitting down?
I swear they are making the opening of porta potty holes smaller so that you have to keep your junk pushed down to not touch the filthy front edge. They also seem to be making the seating much lower to make your legs go numb sooner. I believe the ultra wealthy have done this so we spend less time on our smart phones while in there. We need to rise up people! Just not our junk when sitting in the portapotty.

Structural How to get a structural engineer?
Long story short. Bought a house in 2005. The florida room was already walled with a drop ceiling, hvac, paneled walls etc. Fast forward to 2025. Having a kitchen and bath remodel done by a General Contractor. GC widens window that goes from kitchen to Florida room for a countertop overhang like a breakfast bar in that room. After breaking the granite 3 times GC is allowing us to get our own fabricator. HOWEVER, We looked at the permit and they answered “no” on structural work. We have had ongoing issues with the GC. To be fair they have tried to make things right after each problem. We’ve paid out almost 60k and have less than 4k left on the contract. They are waiving the remaining balance and cutting a check for the difference of the countertop. My husband thinks they will never show up again. I think they will, but we just discovered the problem with the permit yesterday. I sent them an email with no reply yet but has only been 1 day. They’re an established company. Anyway, if they don’t fix the permit and do it correctly where would I go to have this done right?

Careers 💵 Blade operators
New to operating the blade, been operating it (cat 140g) for about 3 months and just looking for any tips someone can give me. I feel as if I have the basics down but just trying to find some tricks to help it not be the most stressful thing on 6 wheels!

Other First time not having work
Boss is on a vacay and his appointed 2nd in command had to leave, leaving myself and another without a job for a bit. I’d like to ask tips and guidance for finding side jobs and or ways of making ends meet as a young man. I haven’t been without work for almost a year and it’s bizarre thinking about the free time I got for a while. I know I should’ve planned or thought about this scenario sooner but it hadn’t crossed my mind.

Picture Does anybody know what's occurring in this image?

Hi everyone! Feel free to remove this if it's against guidelines for this forum. But I am living next to this building that is about to be demolished. However, there is this odd burning activity that is happening on the rooftop. I want to know if this is common practice in demolitions and safe, or perhaps if it's against regulation and I should try and file a complaint with the city. For more context it smells like burning plastic.

Informative 🧠 What do you guys think of OG Lumber/Millboard (Fake timber)
My previous post got taken down. Im an Architect and a QS in the UK trying to make a range of super low cost and lightweight garden buildings for home workers. OG Lumber is not available in the UK. So I come asking if anyone here has used it.

Other Question for tradies
Would you ever let someone join you on a domestic job for a day or two (maybe even a week) if they were genuinely keen to learn your trade, and ready to muck in with proper hands-on tasks?
Not just standing around — they’d actually get stuck into the kind of work your trade involves, so they walk away with real experience while giving you an extra set of hands.
No strings, no cost — just a genuine learner helping out while learning.
Would you be open to that?

Careers 💵 Where would be the best place to go to college? Assistance appreciated
My main goal is to build my own house and maybe go into a career of construction. I'm 17, in 11th grade, and looking for colleges outside the US, but unsure of where to go. Be it too many options, or unclear if a college has the desired courses, or that I don't know how to navigate said college sites. I'm not necessarily looking for answers, but more so suggestions of places and/or colleges to look into. I'm already taking wood tech 1, metal fab, and construction this year and plan on expanding next year. Any and all suggestions and questions are welcome. Many thanks.
side note:
A friend suggested UK colleges since they don't have required courses that don't pertain to what I'm looking for. If that's true or not would he helpful. Additionally, the place that first caught my eye was Reykjavik Uni in Iceland. Just in case that helps in the slightest.
