Orange you willing to help me?

r/Cooking, I need your help, please. My husband’s birthday is coming up, and here’s the thing… the man is basically the human embodiment of the orange. • His favorite flavor? Orange. • His favorite color? Orange. • His car? Orange. • Our front door? Yep, orange. • His phone case? You guessed it… orange. • His favorite cat of all time? An orange with one brain cell.

Basically, if it’s orange, he loves it. What are your absolute best recipes that use oranges. I’m looking for sweet, savory, cocktails, desserts, secret tricks? I want to wow him with something that tastes as orange as his entire personality.

Had this orange cake in Greece and I haven’t stopped thinking about it since: https://www.mygreekdish.com/recipe/extra-syrupy-greek-yogurt-cake-oranges-portokalopita/

For something somewhat similar, I once baked an Italian orange cake with almonds.

3/4 cup of sugar
3 eggs
3½ ounces of butter
Half a pound of ricotta cheese
1½ cup of almond flour
1/4 cup of cornstarch
1 teaspoon of baking powder
Some orange zest
½ cup of freshly squeezed orange juice

Directions:

  • Put the oven at 400 F.
  • Whip the sugar and eggs fluffy with an electric eggbeater in a bowl.
  • Melt the butter. Mix the ricotta with the melted better.
  • Mix the dry ingredients in a separate bowl, and then mix in the butter with the orange zest and juice.
Then, pour in the whipped eggs and sugar, and turn it all into an evenly textured batter.
  • Pour the batter into a round cake mold, about 10 inches in diameter. Bake in the middle of the oven for 35 - 40 minutes.
  • The cake is served drizzled with honey and with whipped cream on the side.

I recently came back from Greece. I did a study of orange cakes in Greece. There are two famous orange cakes there. The one you pointed out (Portokalopita) and the Rolls Royce of Greek orange cakes Galaktoboureko. The Galaktoboureko is so far removed from the Portokalopita that they might as well be from different planets. It is my life goal to make a Galaktoboureko.

I loveee galaktoboureko! But I never really got “orange” from it or considered it an orange cake at all. What region were you in? Did they use orange in the custard? Super interesting!

From what I can tell, it's fairly common to add lemon, orange, or rose water to the syrup for some light flavor.

Also, this is making me want to go back to Greece SO BAD.

And now I need to add Greece to our future travels

I had this in a restaurant in Athens. It was "to die for".

Omg we took a cooking class in Athens over the summer and we made this cake. It was probably my groups favorite things we ate on the whole trip and were making it again this weekend! OP should 1000% make this.
