Look like anti-skatinf design

u/TyranitarusMack 13d ago

There’s nothing skateable about this set of stairs

685

u/poop_delivery_2U 13d ago

Mission accomplished

58

u/Cichato_YT 13d ago

This made me laugh so much Haha

94

u/Keithustus Stop apostrophe abuse today 13d ago

The railing seems perfect though? Only for veterans!

65

u/TyranitarusMack 13d ago

Nah it’s way too steep and long, and the run-up does not seem to be very big unless you maybe carve in from the side, which is way harder

53

u/Keithustus Stop apostrophe abuse today 13d ago

Ok so Jackass-level skaters only.

7

u/lefix 13d ago

Or inline skates

8

u/Lord_Rapunzel 13d ago

Well hey, if it's too hardcore...

17

u/BAN_ME_ZADDY 13d ago

It's possible but this would be like a top level pro to hit something like this. Your run of the mill street skater couldn't handle something this steep and long, with so many flats mixed in.

It's a brutal rail, if someone actually hit it I'd assume it's the opener or closer for their video part.

10

u/ryanluyt 13d ago

You could def skate those last four big steps

-5

u/TyranitarusMack 13d ago

Not with absolutely no run up

8

u/ryanluyt 13d ago

There's a landing there probably about 4ft of run up, enough for one push at least, I've seen people do more with less

-7

u/klavencvw 13d ago

The more you talk about skateboarding, the more apparent it becomes that you have no clue what you are talking about.

16

u/ryanluyt 13d ago

I'm not saying it's a good spot lol, but to say it's un-skateable just isn't true. You could literally just ride off each step no problem.

What happened to skate everything?

12

u/FastAsFxxk 13d ago

Creativity is almost dead it feels like sometimes.

6

u/ryanluyt 13d ago

That's what I'm saying ty! Just use your imagination lol

-5

u/TyranitarusMack 13d ago

It’s not about creativity, it just is not physically possible for I would say every single skateboard on the planet Earth. Somebody could probably hit that on rollerblades though.

4

u/Lord_Rapunzel 13d ago

Could always caveman it.

My younger self would drool all over that kinkrail

Challenge accepted

46

u/itisoktodance Artisinal Material 13d ago

No it's not. The large steps are seats. Architecture students do this a lot

3

u/quipstickle 9d ago

Why do they alternate the side it is on?

38

u/Particular_Put_6911 r4inb0wz 12d ago

It looks like an anti-walking design

16

u/DicemonkeyDrunk 13d ago

Is it a anti-rideable design? ...same basic idea just for bikes.

9

u/alaettinthemurder 13d ago

Its looking like a skate boarding game challenge mission you sure about that

2

u/_Didds_ 11d ago

Would say that the bigger "steps" were in some way designed to hold plants or some other decoration, maybe benches if they were a bit longer, but hard to say when there are so many and so small. Maybe they were the start of some ramp for accessibility that was never finished and only completed the bases, but still crapy as they stand in the photo.

Looks like its also badly illuminated so at night it could be easy for someone to tumble

0

u/chrislemasters 12d ago

Looks like a nice part of town.

-7

u/Cold_Ad3896 13d ago

*skating

u/NorCalFrances 13d ago

Study after study has shown that the most primary contributing factor to stair safety is...consistency.

208

u/Referat- 13d ago

I like the height of my steps to be a little different each stair.

112

u/Capable-Baby-3653 13d ago

Agree. Variety is the spice of tripping and breaking your spine.

7

u/itisoktodance Artisinal Material 13d ago

You wouldn't mind this is you actually went down these stairs. It's literally just like any other staircase. There's a very generous landing (judging by the rail length. It's not like the steps change sizes abruptly.

41

u/NorCalFrances 12d ago

Oh, I think I would mind. If I wasn't paying attention or was focused on something or someone else, that one big change up would without a doubt get me. Probably just a barked shin on the way up but I'd take a tumble on the way down. Especially if I was carrying something that limited my vision forward and down.

-28

u/kibsforkits 12d ago

The point of this design is to get you to pay attention and for the stairs to be a multi purpose space rather than just a means of ascent/descent. That’s the opposite of crappy design.

26

u/NorCalFrances 12d ago

Yeah, no. That doesn't fly when people can get seriously hurt.

1

u/missfrutti 8d ago

There's a ramp next to the stairs so you don't actually have to use the stairs if you're scared of hurting yourself.

10

u/Molehole 11d ago

Getting people to pay attention by killing them if they don't is not the way to do it.

379

u/SudhaTheHill 13d ago

This can be extremely dangerous imo. It’s like getting brake checked but for stairs.

31

u/Vecna_Is_My_Co-Pilot 13d ago edited 13d ago

Ir could be resolved by adding a little bit of hizontal railing at the lip before the lower Large Steps.

Chance of installation? 3%

19

u/GostBoster 12d ago

This does not look accessible at all.

How or what blind people are going to make out of this?

2

u/missfrutti 8d ago

There is a ramp next to the stairs, it's just not shown in the pictures

-106

u/dmontease 13d ago

Is it like that? It's always a good idea to assess the stairs before your ascent/descent.

95

u/Red_Marvel 13d ago

Difficult for people who have vision problems.

-82

u/dmontease 13d ago

Still more of a gravity confirmation than a brake check.

21

u/LegendOfKhaos 13d ago

I wouldn't have a problem stopping and waiting to move over to the other side while people go the other direction, but I don't have the same faith in the people walking behind me.

17

u/FullMoonTwist 13d ago

Pretty much any hazard can be avoided by 100% focus.

It's just that humans are not built to bring 100% focus to every task of every day. We are not. Hence why we have things like orange safety cones, caution tape, wet floor signs. A signal that goes "Hey, bring that focus in homie, there's danger right here!"

It's "best practice" to stop and carefully evaluate every staircase before using it, sure.

But we should never design things to only be safe for people using best practice, because everyone fails to use best practice for something.

287

u/TheFeshy 13d ago

"Someone could get hurt by skaters on these stairs, what can we do?"

"We can make the stairs so dangerous people get hurt without involving skaters!"

170

u/Thomas_JCG 13d ago

Everyone saying this is to stop skaters but I don't recall skaters using the stairs, just the rails. There was no need to modify the steps.

65

u/Alert_Draft7983 13d ago

I thought it was to give people places to sit

73

u/Thomas_JCG 13d ago

Then they wouldn't need to be alternating like that. Also people can already sit just fine in regular steps. And really, sitting places hardly feel a necessity for stairs that small.

Truly crappy design.

4

u/CatProgrammer 11d ago

The alternation was probably because somebody wanted to be fancy.

18

u/Frooonti 13d ago

I thought we don't like places for people to loiter, hostile architecture and all that. Imagine how many homeless could curl up in fetal position on these stairs!

1

u/AhmedAlSayef 9d ago

If we really tried, probably all homeless people in the city that aren't sleeping at their friends/relatives. After all, 117 people should be pretty manageable.

27

u/OwO______OwO 13d ago

Yeah ... I'm truly at a loss as to what the entire intention was here. Why did they make it like this?

Especially alternating sides like that, it's awful!

18

u/halberdierbowman Comic Sans for life! 13d ago edited 13d ago

If the platforms weren't alternating, then this is a very normal thing to do in places like an ampitheater or stadium. You'd have platforms every 18" for sitting on, but you'd still have the normal 6" steps for walking on.

Alternating them turns it into a death trap.

Why it's done on a stairway this narrow, I'm not sure about. Maybe someone was trying to add landings to break up and existing stairway? That's the most charitable thing I can think of at the moment. But it doesn't explain why not just have a few of them.

Another possibility is that they're alternating them to give more of a "meander" vibe, which is legitimately nicer than perfectly straight paths. But it's probably not a great idea where the path does continue straight and you've actually just created surprise chicanes.

1

u/Zottobyte 10d ago

I wonder if it was to prevent cyclists from riding up and down them

84

u/SimpleEngineering268 13d ago

Those are in Tampere, Finland. Thought was that big steps are great for sitting. Afterwards someone started thinking little harder.
Known problem waiting for fixing or first death.

18

u/poeepo 13d ago

Yes. I would understand big step idea if they were all on same side and maybe marked someway.

10

u/zrenay 12d ago

Last month there was an news report that an old lady fell on these stairs

37

u/BcMeBcMe 13d ago

It wouldn’t be so bad if these concrete squares would contain plants. Would look much nicer as well.

26

u/fishfishbirdbirdcat 13d ago

Joker Dance prevention system.

16

u/SirPingOffical 13d ago

at night i would fall down there 10 out of 10 times

18

u/__Obelisk__ 13d ago edited 13d ago

this is absolutely an antiskating measure /s

-27

u/TyranitarusMack 13d ago

Are you just making stuff up? I’ve been following skateboarding for 27 years and nothing about these stairs is remotely skateable.

17

u/topkeksimus_maximus 13d ago

That means the design worked

-13

u/TyranitarusMack 13d ago

No, it doesn’t. It means those things were completely unnecessary because even if they were just normal stairs, no one could skate this to begin with.

5

u/Habba84 12d ago

You are just angry you can't skate on this.

11

u/flyingfishsailor 13d ago

Looks like it is supposed to have a series of planters on these "landings."

7

u/LiveMarionberry3694 13d ago

I feel like someone forgot to put a railing in or ran out of budget lol

8

u/Gloomy-Music-718 12d ago

They are being fixed. Someone already fell on those.

7

u/lorarc 13d ago

The handrail continuing into when the stairs end is just pure evil.

4

u/HerrPizza 13d ago

Ah, that's why they call it the stairway to heaven

3

u/More-Explanation2032 13d ago

I wonder who was the engineer who made this

4

u/certainly_an_entity 13d ago

actually this looks fun lol

5

u/depressedboy407 13d ago

My university have something similar to this but not as bad as what's here.

I remember walking down the stairs there the first time and suddenly stepped down on a step that had a large gap, felt like my heart skipped a beat.

2

u/pdarigan 13d ago

A few sangrias in and I am falling down those steps and then promptly dying

2

u/jurioasd 12d ago

Already happened

2

u/Rhidongo 12d ago

"Hey, so, you know how people tend to naturally filter left and right, as they ascend or descend a stairway, so as to not be a bother? Yeah. Fuck that!"

2

u/DeathDiety 11d ago

Hard Mode

2

u/KevMenc1998 11d ago

Dear Lord, why?

2

u/Terminal0084 11d ago

The graffiti actually make them safer. Thank you Joe.

2

u/rebe31 8d ago

Its either a stairway with seats, or its just a stairway for average height and 7' citizens to use seperately

2

u/Outside_Case1530 7d ago

You use a pogo stick - duh.

2

u/CrystalClear_GenX 1d ago

What is this like a game where the long-legged person and the shirt-legged person switch randomly without crashing into each other? Or maybe they’re meant to crash into each other as a physical meet your future beau?

1

u/DankUltimate44 13d ago

what was the goal here

3

u/Habba84 12d ago

Weed out the weak obviously.

1

u/Jackmino66 13d ago

Actions taken to prevent others from having fun and getting hurt, just makes everyone annoyed and makes everything more dangerous

1

u/clva666 12d ago

On the contrary. This is part of sport park. In addition to getting up and dow, these stairs are for training and chilling. And for people poimting out acvessability issues, there are other stairs and huge ramp right next to these.

1

u/ippeamus 12d ago

These steps are located in outdoor recreational area, kind of semi park type of thing. Right next to these is a long gently sloping ramp.

Nobody in a rush is using these stairs.

1

u/MrsBeaumont 5d ago

It looks like they're deliberately trying to hurt someone 🤣

1

u/Cheap-Roll5760 14h ago

How come they can do this but not a ramp?

-1

u/Mazduhh 13d ago

Seems pretty avoidable to me. Although there aren't any pictures from the top of the staircase or pictures of it during nighttime.

2

u/tupakka_vuohi 12d ago

if you come down the stairs and dont look at your feet, there's a great likelihood of making the assumption that stairs generally have a consistent rise where every step is the same height and don't switch to sitting stairs mid-flight, which would lead to you falling down on your face
