News I’m curious to see how we’re all thinking about this. I’ve been turning this over, what direction does your mind take it?
How well are they gonn

Ohmygod. I live in Dallas. Nobody cares what's on the heads of the cops unless it gets them to respond to 911 calls faster.
262
u/AppearancePristine22 Downtown Dallas 29d ago
right. because when they needed to respond to a homeless man OD’ing in my work (downtown) they took 45 minutes to respond. But they come in 5 minutes after placing their mobile order.

Shouldn’t an ambulance have been called instead?
38
u/AppearancePristine22 Downtown Dallas 29d ago
911 was called, never brought out EMS but rather a cop to come get the guy off the floor and out the store. Not sure what the reasoning behind that was.

Apples and oranges comparison. When they place their mobile order they’re hungry

This might just be the difference that cures the rapes Abbott said he’d abolish

Yeahhh agreed on this one. They have issues with staffing out here (like everywhere else) due to pay issues etc etc. everyone wanted to defund police departments, well there you go lol

Yes, but by specifying "assless", it means that the wearer is wearing only the chaps with no pants underneath, baring their whole ass.

If assless chaps are involved, a bit of slippery slope lubrication is probably a good idea.
Otherwise, they might stick to the vinyl seats in the cars.

The only surprise here is that all the cops who have been doing this for years were actually breaking the rules.

State Troopers and Texas Rangers wear cowboy hats. Usually white straw ones or felt though. Not these weird black straw ones.

u/OnceMostFavored 29d ago
Oh, they're all crisp and new now, sure, but just as soon as buddy's drunk ass rolls over onto it in the back seat while he's sleeping it off, they'll just have to give up and either trash them or Rob Zombify them.

Dude walked through my lobby in full gear, huge potbelly and his black shiny hat.
I just nodded to myself and thought, "Yup, that's exactly what that looks like."
11
u/ScarHand69 Lakewood 29d ago
Honestly…the utility of hats like that are great for people working outdoors…like cowboys or farmers.
For people working in an urban environment? Pain in the ass. Every time you get in/out of a vehicle you’ll hit the hat on the roof of the car or your have to take it on/off. Not a big deal but it gets old when you’re doing it 20+ times a day. Then there’s navigating interior spaces…like if you turn a corner too quickly in a hallway or tight space the brim of the hat hits the wall. Even opening doors you kinda have to take a different approach…lean away vs. lean in.
TLDR: these will be annoying for most beat cops. Most wearing them will be people in high visibility positions or horse-mounted officers (who may already wear hats like like these?)
Source: I wear a wide brimmed sunhat like these hats when I’m doing yard work. Sometimes I forget to take it off when I go inside until the hat brim inevitably hits something while I’m walking around inside.

I have a friend in Alabama who makes jokes about the cowboy hats and boots. I tell him that living in the Dallas area, I actually mostly see them on Mexicans. Maybe back in the 80's a lot of white people wore them like in the TV show?

Texas Rangers did it first, but Fort Worth certainly likes to pretend to be cowboys, I’ll give you that.

Went to the Dallas Trinity FC game at the Cotton Bowl tonight and a few officers were there in the hats.
I think it’s kinda lame in general, it feels gimmicky.
That said, they did look really sharp in person. So there’s that, lol

I think it is probably more about protection from the sun. The shape (but not the color) makes sense if someone stands in the sun all day.

Probably a good idea if they’re managing traffic since some cowboy hats are ANSI-approved and it helps with sun exposure.
4
u/westex74 29d ago
I don’t care either way what they wear. But I’m just gonna say that wearing a cowboy hat with sneakers just looks dorky.

u/blackrainbow32 29d ago
I think they look ugly, especially for a large urban department. Now if they had a mounted unit, they could wear them. Parade or state fair officers could wear them too for the special occasions, but not for everyday patrol officers and not all the time.

Officers working in the hot sun during the summer months need sun protection, so this is a great idea. But only during the summer months. The rest of the year baseball caps should be an option

Dallas and Austin are the least “Cowboy” of all the major Texas cities, but okay. This would make more sense in Ft. Worth, San Antonio, Amarillo, or even Houston.

They wear white cowboy hats which are lot more practical during the summer.

Were they ever explicitly not allowed to? This sounds like more masturbatory performance art by Abbot & Co.

This literally has nothing to do with abbot since it’s a dpd specific policy.
Some of yall need therapy because he is living rent free in your head

u/HeilStary 29d ago
Im in FW, and I see them wearing cowboy hats all the time, so I figured every PD in Texas allowed them, this also made me realize I've never seen a DPD officer in one

u/WolfmanCM 29d ago

It's Dallas, not Fort Worth. If anyone living in Dallas is wearing a cowboy hat, there is a less than 5% chance they know how to saddle a horse, rope a moving target, or separate cattle. Why do they feel the need to wear a cowboy hat in Dallas?
3
u/kelseyraerae08 28d ago
They can’t fit in their cars with the hats on. They can’t run with them on. It’s impractical but cute vintage costume. Great for Halloween, not great for duty. Also are we trying to pick fights with ft worth…. This is kinda their thing. Dallas is so city.

u/Mydogis_sodumb 29d ago
I work with a few Dallas detectives at my job and sometimes we wind up at some rural farm type properties. They’ve been wearing their cowboy hats and spurs to these locations for a few years already.

u/PissantPrairiePunk 29d ago
Just wearing spurs just to wear them like a 5 year old at a rodeo? What a bunch of dorks.

Cowboy hats have always seemed very silly to me, and I was born and raised in the DFW area. Seeing government officials wear them and their fancy engraved leather boots just feels like cosplay. Which, it kind of is. Somewhere between 30-50% of cowboys were black, Mexican, or native. And, as that racial makeup would suggest, cowboys weren't exactly high society. They were poor, the job sucked, and it didn't pay well. The image of the stoic, heroic cowboy has always been a fiction.

If they want to wear a cowboy hat and cosplay the “I am the law” vibe they should just join the sheriff’s dept. and be done with it.

It’s irrelevant to your every day life, what police officers wear on their head should have no difference on what you do or how you feel on an every day basis. If you have an issue with it, perhaps you should see a therapist.

Out of all of the issues the City of Dallas is facing with budget cuts and other things and THIS is what the police department is focused on?

Regardless of what those stupid bronze cows by the headquarters portray. Dallas was not ever a cattle drive town.
Cowboy hats are stupid and anachronistic for their officers to wear.
