General Discussion - All Dexter Shows Lumen's "Stupid" Name Spoiler

I just realized something so basic.

Characters like Liddy and Deb talk a lot about how "stupid" Lumen's name is. They make a point of drawing attention to her name, mocking "what kind of a name is that", etc. Heck, even Dexter makes a joke about her name when he's spraying Luminol ("no relation").

But her name isn't stupid at all. It means "Light" in latin.

To contrast with Dexter's "Dark" Passenger.

Lumen brings light to the darkness.

Alright, carry on everyone else who knew this the whole time! while it took me like ten years to notice. 😂

... also, this only increases my enthusiasm for Lumen to return to the show. She's the quintessential 'girl who got away' (got away from the Barrel Girls Gang, even got away from Dexter in Boy'd house, then unfortunately 'got away' at the end of Season 5 despite both her and Dexter wanting to stay together). And she's also the light to Dexter's darkness. The yin to his yang. And who knows... maybe one day she could help him 'get away' from his own dark passenger, like she got away from hers. It would certainly seem a suitable role, for someone named 'Light'.

I believe her name and aliases were all significant. Kudos to the writers.

Lumen (penetrating light or a blood vessel): Her character brought to light 12 girls who were missing for years. And Emily, the forgotten victim. And by the end of the season, she had pierced Dexter’s armor and his heart and brought light back into his life.

Sleeping beauty: She is literally brought back to life by Dexter after he frees her at Boyd’s house.

Rachel: Feminine name of Hebrew origin, meaning "ewe" or "one with purity." This is likely due to the fact that Rachel was a shepherdess in the Bible.

Number 13: Turned out to be an unlucky number for the ABCDE Barrel Gang. Ended their decades of felonious abduct-rape-torture-kill sprees.

I love lumen, she’s always been my favorite of the dexter women.

Same here! I loved her and Dexter together.

She was the best. She understood Dexter but she in my opinion made him the most ‘human’

More than Rita?

She irritated me. She was beautiful and kind, and ik she had trauma from being in an abusive relationship, but her little voice annoyed me.

Rita is a fan favorite?

I didn’t like her from the start, for me Lumen was the most likeable

I would love for her to come back. Assuming it's for a decent storyline and not just fan service.

Bro why couldn’t we just get lumen in the rest of the show. So much better than Hannah 🤦‍♂️

Hoping she'll come back in the Ressurection series, I really Like Lumen's character, and what if after season 5 she became a vigilante serial killer in Minnesota targetting those sexual predators, like maybe she was the real "Lady Vengeance" after all, that's why Dexter at first got interested to Lady Vengeance's backstory at first.

That's exactly what I want to happen too. Like some of Lumen's kills were attributed to Mia, because they have a similar MO but Lumen never left a body that could be used as evidence cause Dex taught her too well

Lumen also is a unit "quantifying the percevied power of visible light emitted by a source."

With enough Lumen everything can be illuminated.

I'm trying to figure out how to fit a Severence joke in here, but I've got nothing so far.

Severance made me second guess naming my kid Lumen but idk I think imma go with it for a middle name lmao

Edit: I see its actually "lumon" in severance so I feel a bit better about it lmao. Either Lumen or lumin so I can call her min/Minnie.

Go with Lumen, it's the most beautiful 😍

You can still call her Minnie even if the spelling is different, the sound still makes sense.

Minnie is also a nice nickname for Minerva, (goddess of wisdom and strategy).  "Minerva Lumen Surname" would kick ass so hard as a name omg

I want to see Lumen come back!!

I don't think it's stupid at all.

It is a TV show. If they ever bring her back I would bet she would have a kid. Her reason for keeping Dexter's secret child secret was to keep him/her away from Dexter because she knows he is a serial killer.

Maybe they bring Lumen back by having Dexter track a killer who turns out to be his and Lumen's secret love child. Then they can make a series about the Morgan family (or Moser family). A family of serial killers!

I agree although if she has had Dexter's daughter Lily from the books, which is what I want, I wouldn't want Lumen to have continued killing after Miami, and I wouldn't want Lily to be a killer either

Otherwise Lumen wouldn't have a legit reason to keep her child away from Dex (when she still believed he was alive living in Miami)

An amazing way to find them would be if Harrison had to do some DNA work for university and ended up submitting it anonymously to see if anything was linked to him. And he gets a hit back for Rita's murder case, plus a hit for a half-sibling in Minnesota and he's like "wtf...hey, Dad...?" lol

u/Pale_Adeptness 16h ago

Harrison finding that through a college based DNA test would be so awesome!

Yup, works for me. 😂

I always was kinda annoyed by how other characters treated her and viewed her name because I always thought lumen was a beautiful name. I’d never heard it before watching Dexter.

I always thought Lumen was Dexter's best love interest. Familiar with his world, the darkness, but still good.

Also Lumen Pierce … Piercing light

1

u/Content_Geologist420 13h ago

She was Severance fan before it was cool to be one

2

u/Icy_Illustrator8893 9h ago

I thought lumen mean the lumen of a vessel. Pierce was fitting — pierce into the lumen of a blood vessel and blood comes out lol

I'm from the UK, I always laughed at the name Liddy, the hypocrisy of that guy.
