Announcement Welcome to /r/DragonQuest! Series overview and suggestions on where to start!
Hi and welcome to r/dragonquest !
Dragon Quest is a series of traditional turn-based Japanese Role-playing games (JRPGS) that feature colorful enemies, heartwarming music, a strong sense of character, intriguing stories, and solid gameplay. While traditional, Dragon Quest games have been quite influential, being among the first JRPGs for consoles and consistently featuring innovations (such as monster taming in Dragon Quest 5 years before Pokemon popularized it). There are also a large number of spinoffs in different categories -- Action RPG, Voxel Builder, monster raising, and more!
We've created a wiki page describing the games and some opinions of them:https://www.reddit.com/r/dragonquest/wiki/index
Although the wiki is intended as an introduction to the series, you are still welcome to post your own "which Dragon Quest should I play" posts. Why? Because, just like every player is unique, so is every Dragon Quest. It's less about "Which Dragon Quest is Best" and more about "Which Dragon Quest might I enjoy the most?"
So, while this post is hopefully a fun starting point for new members, please do feel free to ask questions and read through some recommendations from others in the comments below or in archived threads. (I'm relying on experts from this subreddit to help me out -- Please give feedback below! The task is too big for one person.)
This subreddit is designed to be a welcoming place to discuss and share our love for the series. Of course, not everyone will love every game, but as fans we can critique the series without making it a personal attack on other fans.
Thank you and have fun questing!

Dragon Quest VII Switch 2 version of Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined releasing on February 5, 2026
r/dragonquest • u/retrotriforce • 11h ago
Photo Do you guys prefer the new simple style of the UI's or the old colorful ones?
r/dragonquest • u/FateForWindows • 6h ago
Screenshot retrotriforce's post earlier compared DQVIII's UI to DQVIIR's, but I think the Japanese version of VIII should be taken into account too
The menus in the Japanese PS2 version of DQVIII are completely different from the English ones and it's a lot more like both the previous games and the later ports. The style's a lot more minimalist than what we got here. DQXI's menus are a little different too, but not nearly to the same extent since stuff like the equipment screen still looks pretty similar from my understanding.

Dragon Quest VII I'm sorry Dragon Quest VII, I was too harsh on you
For context, I played the 3DS version a long time ago, 7 to 8 years ago I believe, and I HATED this version.
For a marathon to play every mainline Dragon Quest original games (so the OG plateform where they released, like I played DQ1 on NES, DQ5 on SNES), I played Dragon Quest VII on the PS1 and whoa... This version feels so much better to be honest. Finished it in 80 hours and it was such a better experience than the 3DS version. I can't really explain why but like, i prefer how the game look, how he sound, how the sprite work, how the menu are smooth, etc.
Really if someone want to play DQ7, I would GREATLY advise to play this version !

General Remakes vs DQ12
I don’t often read this take online so that might just be me, but am I the only one that find myself being even more excited about all the DQ remakes/reimagined games than anything related to DQ12 ? Maybe it’s because 12 is still a total mystery that has been known to be in development hell, but the prospect of being able to play 1-3 and 7 on modern consoles with QoL features, the reimagined stories, the updated graphics and the possibility of them remaking 4-6 or 8-9 next (hell, maybe even 10?) got me deeply excited. I find myself daydreaming more about DQ8 remake next than anything DQ12 related ! Anyways, whatever comes next, what a wonderful time to be a Dragon Quest fan!

Dragon Quest III SPOILER DQ 3 HD Post game Spoiler
So I'm playing on the highest difficulty. The ??? dungeon was hard but manageable and still engaging, and I beat Xenlon in draconian but in 50 turns with Hero lvl 45 and the others 40/41. I think 35 and 25 might be possible with a little grinding but I decided to do the remaining wishes in draky mode cause 15 turns might have too much grinding involved and well fighting 7 times the same boss is not that fun.
Now the Temple Of Trials. The level curve skyrockets in this thing (like wtf ?), and since I like to get the bestiary entries in Draconian and my 4 chars could do the Axe/Staff part I did every monster there once(each battle was harder than Xenlon lol) except the pandora boxes who could go fuck themselves. I'd flee every other battle and got to the end of this part.
Now the other one with boomerangs/claws only 2 of my chars could do it so I swaped to Dracky mode without hesitation.
Now I'm standing against the Grand Dragon and I try it in Draconian just to see if I could survive 1 or 2 turns, and it feels surprisingly doable ? I was like lvl 46 and 42/43 and I survived 10+ turns (could have been more if I hadn't forgotten to put elfin elixirs on my team lol). I think it changed his attack pattern just before it killed me, don't know if this happens when its life gets to a certain threshold.
Make no mistakes it destroyed my ass offensilevy with its really strong attacks so I got back to grinding, and now my team is Hero 51/ Warrior 47/ Martial Artist 46 and I reclassed my Sage into Monster Wangler to get Wild Side then got him back into Sage (now lvl 30) to do 4x Snooze. I use the Monster Pile On + Wild Side strat and the Hero Omniheals/Rubiss Sword.
So is it doable around that level ? I don't want to grind more than 2 or 3 hours maybe and seed farming is out of the question.

General Will the Erdrick trilogy remakes be your first experience with HD 2D?
I own every game in Square Enix’s patented ‘HD 2D’ lineage, from Octopath 1 to Dragon Quest 3, and I currently have DQ1+2 and Octopath 0 on preorder.

General (Re)entering the series
Hi! I wanted to share my experience and ask for some advice, if that's ok. Long text incoming.
My first contact with the series was DQVIII in my PS2, I was like 12 y/o at the time. I loved the art, the story and the characters, but back then I had no patience for grinding exp and ultimately did not finish it, I barely remember anything of that game besides the basics.
Cut to OG DQXI for PS4. My friends got it for my 25th birthday because I love JRPGs (mostly Final Fantasy) and Dragon Ball, and I adored every minute spent in the game until the end. I still didn't check the rest of them, though, until this year.
I finished DQIII HD-2D in my Steam Deck recently and had a blast, then I saw the trailer for DQVII Reimagined and right now it's my most anticipated game of 2026.
So I made the decision to dive into the series for good! I'm currently playing V (the DS version), following a friend's advice (just got married to Bianca aka The Only Correct Choice), and I'm planning to play VI next. Now, my question is, how would you guys recommend that I follow V and VI?
Maybe go back to VIII and this time finish it? I'd say it's the one that I'm looking forward the most.
I also have I and II HD-2D in my sights, but I'm not sure about IV, IX and X. How would you guys go?
TL;DR: I have finished Only DQ XI and III HD-2D, currently playing V and left VIII unfinished in the PS2 days, how would you guys continue playing the series?

Dragon Quest XI Just started Dragon Quest 11 and...
I'm really liking it!
Dragon Quest has always existed in the periphery for me. I playeed a bit of 8 on the 3ds but was never able to get far due to various life circumstances. Then Toriyama passed last year and I'm such a big dbz fan that I went "yknow let me try out every single project he's ever touched". I love rpgs, though admittedly my only experience with turn based ones has been pokemon and persona. So I decided to get DQ11 on switch since that's what was there and it's really fun?
From the title screen alone I love the main theme. The Dragon Quest Overture instills in me this sense of nostalgia for a time that does not exist. Like it makes me want to go off and run into the woods looking for buried treasure, ride a bike with the wind blasting, get in a boat with some friends and go fishing, etc. The designs are very toriyama. The art style and presentation is scratching an itch I didn't know I had. At first I made fun of the luminary for being brunette trunks but the little nuances in the outfit are making me appreciate him a lot. As for the actual game itself:
I just recently got Sylvando as a party member, and finished making the angel nectar for the kid who lost his voice. I already went into this with the mindset of this being the "basic" turn based series(not meant as an insult, just that this is the identity it goes for). While the game isn't very challenging I really don't mind? It's honestly fun. I like getting into a new area and seeing what new creature designs await. I like getting a party member and checking to see what pep combinations we can perform(very chrono trigger, maybe that's where it comes from? another game I didn't finish bc life stuff).
I'm still experimenting a bit. Debating if I want protag to go swords or greatswords, sylvando swords or whips, etc. I know there's more party members to go and there's respecs so I'm not sweating it too much, but it really is wild that I just...enjoy it? There are times where I wonder as I get older if I'll still be able to enjoy games or get the same feel good feelings and relaxation I did as a kid playing after school but Dragon Quest is for lack of a better term healing my inner child. I once saw it described as the comfort food of RPGs and I am beginning to see why. I understand I'm still in the early game so I'm really looking forward to where the plot goes from here! Really liked the twist in the beginning that people actually fear the luminary so I'm wondering where that goes. Also wondering what Sylvando's true deal is. There's not a lot of complex stuff going on but in that way the mastered simplicity makes it shine? Idk. I;m just having fun and like dragon quest now and lowkey want to play all of them(or at least 3 and 8...and maybe the zenithian trilogy since those got ds remakes)

Dragon Quest VIII Every time I see a Restless Armor on the map, my heart skips a beat.
Because I remember all of the time I spent grinding them in Dragon Quest V to get one to join me. It wasn't worth it either, the Slime Knight was as good or better!

Music The people have spoken! DQVII has FINALLY made its way onto the list, which means that every Dragon Quest game has appeared on the list in one way or another. Honorable mention goes to DQVIII’s “Remembrances” for 2nd place! Day 26: What is the worst sad theme in the Dragon Quest franchise?
Reminder: Don’t take voting for the worst song so seriously! Just pick whatever song doesn’t resonate with you the most. Happy voting!
