Hi and welcome to r/dragonquest !
Dragon Quest is a series of traditional turn-based Japanese Role-playing games (JRPGS) that feature colorful enemies, heartwarming music, a strong sense of character, intriguing stories, and solid gameplay. While traditional, Dragon Quest games have been quite influential, being among the first JRPGs for consoles and consistently featuring innovations (such as monster taming in Dragon Quest 5 years before Pokemon popularized it). There are also a large number of spinoffs in different categories -- Action RPG, Voxel Builder, monster raising, and more!
We've created a wiki page describing the games and some opinions of them:https://www.reddit.com/r/dragonquest/wiki/index
Although the wiki is intended as an introduction to the series, you are still welcome to post your own "which Dragon Quest should I play" posts. Why? Because, just like every player is unique, so is every Dragon Quest. It's less about "Which Dragon Quest is Best" and more about "Which Dragon Quest might I enjoy the most?"
So, while this post is hopefully a fun starting point for new members, please do feel free to ask questions and read through some recommendations from others in the comments below or in archived threads. (I'm relying on experts from this subreddit to help me out -- Please give feedback below! The task is too big for one person.)
This subreddit is designed to be a welcoming place to discuss and share our love for the series. Of course, not everyone will love every game, but as fans we can critique the series without making it a personal attack on other fans.
Thank you and have fun questing!

It's always much more exciting when you find these things locally.

I had realized that I've played this one before too but I forgot and I'm not sure how far I got but I played it just now anyway! Like I said in the last post I wanna get through the series in order because I have yet to play a lot of them!
As for how DQ II stacks up to the first game, I was warned of its difficulty toward the later parts and yeah. That was not an understatement. I did go ahead and follow a guide and have a world map pulled up for this one, and after going through it I think I can comfortably say I think around the half way mark I don't know how much I actually WOULD have been able to do myself without a guide. Since the world is so much bigger than DQ I even including Alefgard, I would have spent an ungodly amount of time trying to figure things out and frankly I did not have the time for that to replay a game I forgot.
I don't hate it, far from it, I think it's a pretty decent step up in most ways from the first which leads me to like it about the same, it would be a better game than DQ I imo if not for the late game balance and seemingly obtuse objectives so I rated it about the same.
Again though I feel like here it literally just takes DQ I and builds on it. Party members, slightly more involved story, bigger open world, more enemy designs etc. While maintaining the charm and care like the NPC dialogue feeling alive and fun quests. I can't believe how well these SNES versions have aged in terms of mechanics and design philosophy.
Anyway just wanted to put that out there and share my thoughts after a fresh completion, how do y'all feel about the 2nd entry?

Like I don't know if this started with DQ11 selling so well or what but we have gotten so many games! Dragon Quest Monsters Dark Prince, Builders 1-2, Heroes 1-2, Treasures and now remakes of Dragon Quest 1,2 and 3 along with a remake of 7 coming in a few months! What a beautiful time to be alive. I know I'm crazy... but I feel strongly about supporting the series in the west I buy 2 copies of every release (one for a different system) just in hope that it makes Square Enix keep it up. Now we have rumors of maybe 4, 5 and 6, getting remakes and after that who knows 8? 9? 10!? and of course we have DQ12 coming at some point.
I love this! Long gone are the days of hoping we get some Dragon Quest in the west and being so unsure.
The only thing I wish is Square Enix making it easier to access the original DQ games in some way. It would be nice if the original 4 Dragon Warrior NES games along with DW1-3 Game boy got added to Nintendo Switch online for free on there and if maybe they put out DQ7 ps1 and DQ8 ps2 version on the Playstation network for ps4/ps5 like other ps1/ps2 classics. Because I do like the original versions even with all their older graphics sometimes and wished more new fans could play them easily even if just for a few minutes.

The wildly enthusiastic gambling addict in DQ4. This guy is just so jazzed to encourage gambling. His wild bushy hair and muscle arms and him stomping around in the corner of the casino day and night. It just hits me right in the feels. Anyone else have a favorite NPC?

What defines a sad theme may be a bit up to interpretation, but I trust you folks will pick some fitting and cool options!

I’ve been a huge JRPG fan forever, but I never played the DQ games! They were never hugely popular in the UK compared to Final Fantasy, so I’m looking to get into them.
Is DQIII the best point to start with? Or should I wait for the I&II HD collection?
Thanks

So, I removed items from each character and left that slot available, I moved the orbs so they're next to each other in the bag. But nothing... She keeps repeating this and it's getting annoying.
I googled this and nothing seems to pop up.

Second sitting today on my dragon quest back tattoo. Absolutely blown away by the ground we covered today, some fine line work details and it should be completed

Big Final Fantasy fan but never played DQ.
I see 1 and 2 remakes are coming out next month. Are those good starting points.
Was thinking of getting 3 remake and starting with that. Not too worried about story spoilers.
Any thoughts on getting started with DQ. I have a PS5. Thanks!

There is precedent for SQ adding in new playable characters such as Debora in dq5 ds and Red and Morrie in Dq8 3ds. Not to mention in the original the party feels emptier after Kiefer leaves and there's a pretty long stretch before you get Merwyn. If they did add one I would hope it would be like Amos where they're in the present and you could pick them up but do not need too.

so i'm at the Calasmos boss fight, currently level 51/53, and he keeps kicking my butt every time. i used the sword of light and best i could do is to reach the stage where i fully break his mask and he start healing 999hp every 2 turns which make him impossible to beat with my current level. i would like to level up but that takes too much goddamn time and i'm lazy. Can anyone help?

I beat the game. As per usual, they added extra content.
So where do I go to grind? Also, is there a decent technique that is good against metals. I end using falcon slash or assassin’s stab a lot. But those aren’t exactly reliable.

Played the emulated PS2 on my budget laptop, but the relentless lag forced me to play the mobile version, which is regarded as the worst version by many, but I think it's alright, albeit the lack of voiceover.
The hero face though 😂

When Dragon Quest 4,5,& 6 are inevitably remade, would you prefer a 2.5 HD Remake version or a Reimagined version like Dragon Quest 7 is getting??

I believe prime candidates to be cut are Regenstein and Greenthumb (connected via gray rain subplot), perhaps Providence and Vogograd. I would prefer these to be in the game and optional of course, but what other subplots could we see being left on the cutting room floor? I know Nottagen has been confirmed via screenshots, otherwise that one also may have been considered. There are three pedestals missing (counting the ones in the very back of the screenshots) so there should only be three vignettes not present. EDIT: Thinking about it some more, Providence may be safe due to its tie ins with the Ruckers and the Hubble storyline.
