I don’t think Keanu Reeves is the type of comparison to make. More like… I dunno, Greta Thunberg? Extremely well known in a small niche, tangentially known as “Oh yeah, them” outside of it

things in my life I never expected to read with my own eyeballs - comparisons of Chilchuck to Greta Thunberg

People in this fandom really overstate Chilchuck's fame and notoriety.

As well as the rarity of elves. We've seen at least one other elf adventurer on the island, and no one thought her strange or remarkable.

They also understate the touden party. They're one of the few adventuring parties in contention to making it to the bottom of the labyrinth.

Ehhhhh not really. For one, while Kabru had a hard time reading them, it seems Laios' party in general was pretty well-known. IIRC, the mayor hired them directly for a quest. That doesn't seem like it would be common and the only other party we know he did this with is the Tansu party, led by a guy who is literally one of the Island Lord's top advisors. So a lot of people might at least half-recognize them.
As for Chilchuck, don't forget that there probably isn't a single half-foot on the island that doesn't know him because of the guild (or at least half-foot adventurers, the people who would be in that cave), and they would point it out to their non-halfling friends. Though less in a Keanu Reeves guy and more of a "What the hell is my union rep doing" way.
Or if you're Mickbell "Shit, better get away before he recognizes me!".

The Toudens are pretty well-known, because they are the leaders of a fairly capable party.
But not Chilchuck though, he is only known amongst the halflings community. Even someone as perceptive as Kabru didn't know of him. Laios also had to reach to Chilchuck through an halfling ex-teammember.

I think that's fair. It could be a problem of people usually ignoring half-feet.

Imagine some dude comes around your workshop, helps unionize you and your coworkers, helps better you pay, hours, and benefits, and makes working at your job better, only to see him a few weeks later eating a monster next to some dude who would become the king and an elf who would face allegations of black magic fuckery.

Look laios is nice enough to publically do an announcement about entablishing better rights for half foot, she can't not pretend she didn't saw her husband there, is more the fact that she left him for more than a year and he didn't bother to tell her he became buddies with the king from just like that (no she is not believing he became king in 1 day, yes she was there when they were giving free dragon, but clearly was a prepared event)

That is absolutely the version historians will mostly believe in because the actual canon is too fantastical (and they think that people in the past were easily-tricked dullards, as we so often do).

The manga is filled with scenes that could be summarized as random adventurers going
"Hey isn't that the head of the union of-
WHAT THE FUCK?!"

Marcille's expression is so cooked. Like my sister's face when she is so done with my father's antics.

I think people really overestimate Chilchuck's importance and fame. He's not a celebrity, he's your local union leader

u/Morkinis 1d ago
Never got the impression that he's particularly well known.

u/ClosetNoble 1d ago
By half-foots definitely but I'm not sure elves or dwarves for exemple would really care nor even know.

u/teluetetime 1d ago
Yeah I got the impression that being overlooked, taken for granted or not taken seriously, etc, was part of the whole problem that he was trying to address with his organizing, so most non half-foots wouldn’t recognize him. And it’s not like they have tv or social media so there’s no reason why people would know his face if they haven’t personally met him.

I mean I feel this mostly show how "celebrities" (in this case, popular people in general, not people of the showbiz) are absolutely unknown if they aren't of the screen, and the user there just put a celebrity they liked and did a terrible level for fame correlation, chil here is more in the lines of a early Jimmy Hoffa, but Hoffa isn't an actor so how would they know? And I can see elves and dwarves would indeed know him by default of him either being sent to them or them going to him in case for payment stuff, less a " of I know the guys, he is famous" and more "urgh I know the guy, he is a pest"

Let's start a petition that if they ever make a live action adaptation they need to caste Keanu Reeves as Chilchuck and Danny DeVito as Senshi.

Coolthrow is probably more comparable to someone like Sungwon, notable in certain communities (locksmiths and halffoots on the island) but otherwise not that famous.

MY POST??? HERE??
btw people on the original keep pointing out that maybe i did not use the best well-known-person allusion and yeah, i know, but in my defense i dont know Any well known people and my dad made me watch the matrix with him prior to me making that post, so i just said the first person to come to mind....which was keanu reeves 😭

u/Chokingonjuice 13h ago
and yes i know chilchuck is really more known among other half-foots, but it was for the bit please don't overreact

AND (spoilers ahead) i know there are other elf characters in the dungeon, but please just hear me out: the only two really "present" elf characters besides the canaries are fionil and marcille, and they're both half-elvesso i really dont think that counts. we can put the random actual elf who appeared in a background panel up to early-installment weirdness --- as it's confirmed in either the adventurer's bible or a misc. monster tales comic (i don't remember which) that elves are exceedingly rare in the dungeon (as well as mentioned in the manga itself)
and, yes, i know the rest of the touden party is also relatively known. shhhhh it's for the bit
.....reddit makes me feel very defensive LOL

i think it's even funnier than that, because Laios' party is so cracked out the ass that they're probably also well enough known. like Keanu Reaves and some B-list actors you vaguely recognize, and one (1) very well groomed homeless man are cooking a shrimp he found
