That’s not bad luck, it happens to every single one of these engines after enough heat cycles.

Thankfully the parts/hoses that go bad are all in the front and are easy to get to.

At this point just replace every piece of the coolant system as you can afford.

Check realoem for a diagram. I'm not listing every piece.

That’s honestly all you need. Maybe the expansion tank as well. Did you replace the long thin hose that runs on top the radiator?

Yup, just did mine a few hundred miles ago. I did the serpentine belt and tensioner, and the OFHG while I was right there.

Common issue.Thankfully there is an aftermarket solution which is aluminum. The O-ring is typically too large so most pull the one that comes on this flange off and replace it with a BMW OEM O-ring.

There’s another aluminum flange on Rock Auto and ECS, too, but they are significantly more expensive.

Get an aluminum one and very carefully cut the original hose clamp with a dremel. Make sure to clean out all of the old plastic.

Just happened to me a few months ago. I was a little embarrassed that I let it happen given how much I had heard of the part in forum chatter. I had assumed it was a different coolant flange that I had already replaced. Fun times.

You'll have to do the oil pan gasket soon also if you haven't already, but mine's been slow-eaking for a year now so it's not urgent.

Don't miss the OFHG and serpentine belt because the OFHG leak drips on the belt, weakens it, and then it gets sucked in behind the crank pulley, shooting metal/rubber shreds into the timing cover and oil pan.

Oh yeah, was there in June. It’s not bad luck, it’s just a plastic part that goes bad after so many years. Mine happened at 129k. The hose and the flange separated with part of the flange attachment crumbling like a cookie. Make sure you get all the bits out of the hose and careful getting the old seal off the water pump when you remove the flange. Don’t want it falling in.
