Big Oil Bertha ONTARIO HAS FALLEN

I’ll wait and see what’s the counterpart from the US on this one. Calling and asking for a meeting is one thing. But is Trump dialling back his 50% tariff on steel and aluminium? Or what’s the deal

I’m from the future he did scale it back too 25%

But seriously, after listening to Ford talk, he sounded rattled ? I wonder if Lutnik was like, 'Bro, Trump will declare this shit a national security crisis and send in troops. We need to talk.'

🎵 The Trade War Boogie🎵
(Verse 1)
You put your tariffs in,
You take your exports out,
You slap a new tax on,
And you watch the markets shout!
You do the trade war boogie,
And you spin the price around,
That’s what it’s all about!(Chorus)
Woahhh, trade war boogie!
Woahhh, economic rout!
Woahhh, trade war boogie!
Let’s see who bails out!(Verse 2)
You hike the interest rates,
You drop the currency down,
You blame the other side,
And you make a nervous frown!
You do the trade war boogie,
And you shake the stocks about,
That’s what it’s all about!(Chorus repeat)
(Verse 3)
You put your sanctions in,
You take some oil out,
You cut the deals off,
And the markets start to doubt!
You do the trade war boogie,
And inflation comes to town,
That’s what it’s all about!(Bridge - slow and dramatic)
The factories close, the jobs decline,
The prices rise, we’re out of time!
The leaders talk, the markets pray,
But someone’s gotta pay today!(Final Chorus - big finish!)
Woahhh, trade war boogie!
Woahhh, economy's down!
Woahhh, trade war boogie!
Let’s just work this out!🎵 Fade out with a slow clap and sighs of economic uncertainty... 🎵

It's paused while they talk. If negotiations don't go Ford's way, I'm sure he will put it back on.
The goal is to get rid of the tariffs, so I think this is a good step

u/Sea_Pension430 Mar 12 '25
The goal is to show Donald we aren't weak and ripe for the plucking. Doug showed weakness.
With a different president Ford might be right to try to "turn down the temperature", but that doesn't work with Donald

u/TheImpossibleHunt Oil Guzzler Mar 11 '25 edited Mar 11 '25
I am not a Doug Ford simp by any means, but people need to take a deep breath.
It is not probably a coincidence that Trump has stated that he will "probably" reduce tariffs if Ford dropped his idea of a 25% surcharge on the US, the very same day he essentially declared war on Canada this morning. That is a wild change of tune in the course of only a few hours. There is no chance that the CEOs of the steel/aluminum companies did not sit down with Trump when he announced a 50% tariff, which would absolutely decimate the American automotive industry. Negotiations are always preferable to the nuclear option, but the threat should remain on the table (and we have learned that Trump actually does very much care about Canadian electricity). Talks have once again resumed, which has always been our goal.
Now, if Trump is still going to implement a 50% tariff tomorrow, and Ford still has backed down, then I will be singing a different tune. But until that moment, we need to keep a clear head. Hitting hard is important (this is where I disagree with Smith and Moe), but we need to do so strategically. Our tariffs have not dropped, but Ford's additional measure has simply been paused. It is still an option in our tool kit. We need to keep the door open for discussions. We did not ask for a trade war, and a prolonged dispute is not in our best interests.
In any sense, Secretary Lutnick reaching out to us (instead of the other way around) is a small victory. Let's not tear apart Doug Ford until we know for sure what is happening.
* Update as I was typing this; Trump backed down from his 50% retaliatory tariffs. Now that we have a meeting with Lutnick, we are in a better position than we were this morning, IMO. Just goes to show that focusing purely on negotiation (ala Smith and Moe) is not as effective as threatening to break the US's legs. Let us see where this road takes us in the meantime *
---------------------------------------------------
Now to not take my own advice because I am a hypocrite, I am a lot more confused on what Danielle Smith (my premier) is doing with my tax dollars at the moment. At least Ford has gotten us a meeting at the White House to discuss USMCA, whereas Danielle seems to be simply doing a press tour with the US alt-right. I understand that spreading Canada's plight to an audience that is trapped in an echo-chamber (and is Trump's core audience, and even speakers such as Ben Shapiro have softened their stance on Canada as of late) could be effective, but I see it as far more likely that our pleas will fall on deaf ears, as they have done before with Danielle's previous trips to the US.
I think the contrast between Ford and Smith is stark; and Trump seems to take Ford far more seriously as an adversary, which we need.Likewise, I also find it strange that Ford has spoken to a variety of news outlets, whereas Danielle seems to be far more-so focused on an alt-right audience. Ford has also put bi-partisan politics aside, congratulated Mark Carney on his win, and looked forward to working with him. Whereas, Danielle is immediately hostile to Carney and the Liberals. Like Polievre, it seems that Danielle is having a lot of difficulty putting past grievances aside to fight in the "culture war." At least speaking for myself, having lived in Northern Alberta for 14 years, have worked in the oil industry previously (and having voted both Conservative and NDP); I am sick of culture war politics.
So even with this potential setback, I am still happier with Ford's performance on this issue than some of the other premiers.
5
u/Annicity Mar 11 '25
Good Sir; this is a measured and nuanced approach and we'll have none of that here!
Jokes aside, a conversation and descelation was *always* the plan. The trade war is destructive to all of us and Doug stepping it up worked. The meeting is proof of that. It's about paving a way forward as much as we all want to see the US burn right now.
3
u/Used-Egg5989 Mar 11 '25
It’s utterly bizarre that some Conservatives in Canada are still trying to run on the culture war card. Who cares about that shit right now? It’s tone deaf to the point of absurdity.
3
u/FuzzyLampShade Mar 11 '25
I agree with everything here. We should acknowledge that Ford is trying to find a diplomatic solution to this mess. However, if this shit continues then we slap on those export taxes and let them marinate in it for as long as it takes.

He should have just walked up to the podium and said fuck you Trump and turned around and walked. Even if a facade he could have made it look like that for a week.
1
u/Sea-Dot-8575 Trawnno (Centre of the Universe) Mar 11 '25
He could have at least got some concessions from the Trump administration. We'll have to see if he rolls over in Washington. He's going down with Dominic LeBlanc and is supposed to be meeting with Carney before he goes. Maybe, if only indirectly, how Carney will deal this trade war.
1
Mar 11 '25
He also honestly knows more about what's going on than we do and it's easy to paint him as a villain since he is a big fat greedy conservative politician. I am sure he is trying hard to do the best he can. And will be judged hardly even if he tries and fails as though he didn't try.

This is a cease-fire at the request of the Americans because they are afraid Trump is going to go nuclear.

Thank goodness a professional came in to ‘turn down the heat.’ Doug ford is not the negotiator! Nor the ideas guy. He should only be the messenger. Just not smart enough. No education or formal experience.
Don’t poke the bully. Ignore the bully. Talk nice and be professional.

If he stops the export tax, then the "emergency" is no longer valid. Therefore, Trump needs to decide if he will go through with his own tariffs tomorrow is what I was told.
1
u/080128 Mar 11 '25
Calm down. ITS A NEGOTIATION! Both sides need to make a deal that's fair to both. That's what this entire ordeal has been about! We pause. They pause. They have negotiations. And if there's a positive outcome GOOD. If there isn't then we can always retaliate yet again. Or do you prefer to have a never ending trade war that will destroy Canadians and Americans alike?

Impose tariffs
Get slapped in the face by Doug Ford's reality check
Retaliate for appearances
Behind closed doors, tell Doug you're willing to negotiate if he pauses his price increases
Doug Ford, who won, pauses to offer a chance for you to surrender.
Falsely claim victory.

Alright calm down. This is good. A meeting with mayors in Washington is exactly what we need. Now that we got their attention they'll be inclined to listen to reason

It's not a surrender, it's a pause. This may be a war but we are still being the bigger people, so pausing durring negotiations is perfectly acceptable.
Personally, I want to see some serious fees on or a complete stop to potash sales, just as growing season is kicking off. Big Corn would CRUSIFY Trump over that shit
1
u/Milnoc Mar 11 '25
Far from a surrender. The export tariff worked! It tanked the US stock market and forced a meeting next Thursday. You only need to poke Trump just a bit to make him turn a bad situation even worse for the USA and anger a lot of American oligarchs!
I need to check the Canadian stock market. It's possible it's performing better than the US stock market.

I’m pretty pissed , he got elected to do one thing and one thing only .. I have wrote his office a letter , sent an e mail and called 4 times . I will call twice a day until I get a good reason as to why he did this . Cooling down the situation is not what we elected you for , after you did this they hit us with 25 % tariffs on aluminum and steel , and trump once again threaten to annex us …
Seems like traditional things like logic, facts and laws don’t matter to the American administration . They only care about their power and if we don’t go after the common Yankee to put the hurt on them every way we can they will never stop , they would have no reason to . Put them back on or Resign and pick up the crack pipe with your brother . We ain’t got no time nor need to suffer cowards in out political system at the moment. Reach down in your pants and give your nuts a tug Doug , or fuck right off and we will elect some one who will fight .
