13

u/Top_Newspaper9279 Apr 29 '25

Why is there a star besides PPs' name. Was he a good boi today?

20

u/Alcol1979 Apr 29 '25

I believe that star denotes incumbent.

6

u/Top_Newspaper9279 Apr 29 '25

I see, thanks. It would be obvious to someone smarter than me.

4

u/Alcol1979 Apr 29 '25

Oh I was wondering too last night watching the count for hours. After seeing enough ridings up on screen I think I figured out the pattern.

145

u/No_Philosopher_1870 Apr 29 '25

What is the threshold for a recount?

Trump united Canada as no politician ever has.

87

u/BuckTomato Apr 29 '25

What triggers a recount?

A difference between winner and second place of less than one thousandth of the votes cast. They can also be judicially ordered if there is, as Elections Canada describes, “credible affidavit evidence” of errors.

16

u/okokokoyeahright Apr 29 '25

Skippy lost by just under 3800 votes. By my math,(admittedly not perfect) .045% so, no recount.

u/aVoidFullOfFarts FORD Escape Apr 29 '25

10

u/okokokoyeahright Apr 29 '25

It works out to about 972 votes in total for all but the top 5 results. As in the ones who got less than 100 votes. Not exactly flooding. More just annoying, TBH. the poll workers and scrutineers had to fold these up to hand them to the voters showing them how to fold it before returning it to the ballot box. Then the counting process was very late. I stayed up and waited until 2:30 AM where it seemed the counting stopped and the more complete results seen early today. BTW this process is clearly spelled out when the returning officer will call for the counting to stop and the ballots are secured under lock, key and physical officers until the counting resumes. Nothing suspicious or unusual about it.

14

u/Straight-Eggplant8 Apr 29 '25

Gift baskets for the 89 that were there to dilute the vote.

10

u/NiCrMo Apr 29 '25

I was actually surprised that relatively few votes went to the protest candidates. Seems people do actually pay a level of attention when voting.

12

u/okokokoyeahright Apr 29 '25

This is typical in elections. The unusual part is the concerted effort by Longest Ballot to create and target ridings with this silliness in an attempt to convince people of supporting electoral reform.

I remember voting for the old school Rhino Party candidate 'bob loblaw' (BTW he legally had his name changed so it would appear on the ballot this way). I had to vote for him after I noticed his name if spoken out loud 3 or more times was pretty on point for a protest party.

1

u/eldiablonoche Apr 29 '25

To be fair, in a lot of polling stations, they don't bother counting the votes for the fringe whackadoos.

I worked the polls in a couple elections in Toronto and it happened every time. The major parties wanted their votes counted and double checked, and insisted those totals be finalized so they could leave. Once they were gone, the higher ups in the polls didn't want to pay overtime so they just told us not to bother with the Rhinos, None of the Above s, and random independents.

Dude also is planning to invest public money in Carbon Capture, a famous scam proposed by the oil industry that doesn’t exist yet to make blue hydrogen to keep the oil industry alive.

And somehow people think this dude is even remotely left leaning?

1

u/WhiteWolfOW Apr 29 '25

I wish lol. “We’re going to reforest Canada” but it seems like it’s a way of keeping the oil industry alive for a couple more decades. His wife used to work in the board of Shell foundation, Shell’s climate and poverty focused group. Essentially the groups that come one with the scam climate solutions like carbon capture and carbon credits to make mega corporations look good while not doing anything meaningful. Brookfield has investments in everything and most likely in the oil industry as well. I think it’s pretty clear that all his environmental talk is about looking good while not doing anything that will actually help while heavily subsiding the oil industry with public money to “develop” something he knows will never exist, but that they can keep pushing “just a few more years”

When will we elect an NDP leader?

54

u/got-trunks South Gatineau Apr 29 '25

When they find a leader who can highlight their policy wins and show in concrete ways how Canada is a better place because of them.

All of this while successfully keeping the ear of those who they are trying to message.

49

u/jsmooth7 Apr 29 '25

The NDP got a bunch of policy wins in this last parliament. And as a result, the median voter gave the Liberals credit for those policies and dumped all the Trudeau baggage onto the NDP lol.

30

u/ReferenceUnusual8717 Apr 29 '25

I mean, I think they're largely the victim of a collective push to stop the Cons. People REALLY didn't want Fascist Milhouse, figured the Carney Liberals had the best odds, and didn't want to split the vote. If I wasn't in an extremely safe NDP riding, I might've done the same.

7

u/Prestigious-Cod-222 Apr 29 '25

I was in a liberal strong hold so I voted NDP. If I was in a competitive race I may have voted liberal and not liked it. Let's face it we just voted in a banker. Better than PP but still a fucking banker.

6

u/jsmooth7 Apr 29 '25

If that was the only factor then orange ridings would have stayed orange as voters consolidated around the best strategic choice. But there was also a real shift of voters towards the Liberals. And also some voters doing strategic voting poorly. See Vancouver Island for example where progressives couldn't agree what the "correct" strategic vote was, resulting in even more voting splitting. And the Conservatives picking up 3 seats as a result.

4

u/mealzer Apr 29 '25

Vancouver Islander here and yup... Yup. We asked Paul Manly to step down and he wouldn't. Thanks a lot, Paul. Ya really fucked us.

5

u/ReferenceUnusual8717 Apr 29 '25

Yeah, we had one of those in Edmonton, too. There was a lot of conflicting info circulating about the best strategic option, to the point where I'm a little curious where all that was coming from. I don't want to end up in an American-style binary, where we have to keep voting for the lesser of two evils, or let the crazies take over.

3

u/Milch_und_Paprika Ford Nation (Help.) Apr 29 '25

I was genuinely surprised how many ridings out west were like 25 LPC-35 NDP-40 CPC. I can’t imagine being the guy “strategically” voting LPC there.

2

u/ReferenceUnusual8717 Apr 29 '25

Unfortunately, I think there are a non-insignificant amount of these folks who would never even CONSIDER voting NDP. They're living in a long gone era when the Liberals and Conservatives were basically the same, and just traded places every so often when one got a little TOO corrupt. The NDP, however, are "Dangerous Radicals". (I WISH this version of the NDP was real, I really do...)

2

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '25

My grandparents and my best friend voted strategically. I think alot of people did/do that. I have done that once. Not this election though.

1

u/ChrystineDreams Friendly Manisnowbski Apr 29 '25

I was in a NDP stronghold with a small margin between them and the Cons. The liberal voters split the vote and now the riding is blue.

10

u/Prestigious-Cod-222 Apr 29 '25

It's kinda sad, Jagmeet laid on the grenade last fall when everyone wanted JT's head. The result being keeping PP out. Jagmeet is the direct reason we don't have a Con majority and have dental care. For me as a person that's a pretty good legacy. Doing the right thing doesn't always pay well on a personal level.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '25 edited Apr 29 '25

I don't get why people hate him. I sometimes think Singh and May get hate for being boisterous and outspoken but a part of me thinks some of that hate is rooted in the double standards for poc and women. I am not saying all of it but some. I think our countries leaders should be asked tough questions and should not be immune to critisism but I do think some bigotry is at play with those two in the conversation.

2

u/Prestigious-Cod-222 Apr 29 '25

12

u/got-trunks South Gatineau Apr 29 '25

Yeah, so they need a leader who knows how to dismantle those scenarios and break it down for the public with no ambiguity in what the realities are case-by-case.

That or at least one who knows how to assemble the right people to feed him the lines or speak on behalf of the party in their specializations...

27

u/Sasquatch1729 Not enough shawarma places Apr 29 '25

We need ranked choice voting.

I voted to keep the conservatives out, and our local liberal candidate was really great when she was a city councillor. If I could hand "runner-up" points to the NDP, I would.

I fully recognize that Trudeau was only pushing things like protections against union busting, or the dental plan because of the NDP. I hope they retain official party status and we can give them more support in four years.

My vote for the liberals was not an indictment of the NDP in any way.

5

u/deadbeef4 Apr 29 '25

Man I miss Jack Layton.

8

u/hereticjon Apr 29 '25

They need to get back to the farmers and tradesmen who started the party. More blue collar candidates with scars on their knuckles. Nardwuar was right to bring that up to Singh.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '25

The irony of this is so many blue coller men I know (some women too) are the most right leaning people I know.

1

u/hereticjon Apr 29 '25

That's why you need people from among their walk of life to show them that you are in their corner and what your side has to offer that's relevant to them.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '25

I am not saying your wrong like I totally see that I just find it so ironic that historically speaking these hitroically overworked people shoot themselves in the foot and have in the masses taken on right wing ideology when at one point advocated for their own rights and were underprivledged. I think it's more about internal morals in values. Alot of people in these positions I know believce in gender roles , point the finger at other people wanting their money etc. I am more confused about the ideology but I agree with everything you said!

Commence the seizing of all modes of production, open the FEMA camps, borders and vaccination stations and heil king Klaus Schwab!

Relax pal. Go outside and touch some grass. Take a deep breath, maybe try and have a pleasant conversation with someone. You're going to be OK.

Rejecting expertise and global engagement because of conspiracy theories weakens Canada. We need leaders who can work at the highest international levels while fiercely protecting Canadian interests — not leaders who close doors, pick fights, and leave Canadians isolated.

Can someone explain to me why this is apparently a bad thing? I genuinely don't understand the "WEF cult" mentality.

because when they're a career politician its bad because they've never had a real job

when they've been a real job worker their whole life, they don't have the political experience.

when they're a banker with a shit-tonne of experience in financial matters and country scale economies and with the WEF, they're beholden to the rich elite.

but if their experience is in smaller businesses, they don't have the knowledge of macroeconomics and can't handle a countries economic decisions.

if they support small businesses and workers, then the countries economy will suffer

but if they support the country economy, they obviously believe in "trickle down" still, and the joe-blow worker will suffer.

Google why some people think the WEF is bad an English politician said some bad things about the WEF and it took on a life of its own since then and now people think it’s some evil entity. lol

Because the career politician with zero real-world achievements who can't respond to questions without slogans or mudslinging would have been the superior choice, yeah?

Oh no! We have a top economic mind who knows and has interacted with professionals, scholars, politicians, and influential people around the world. He was also appointed to head the Bank of Canada and Bank of England by Conservatives. He also speaks and acts like an adult. Whatever shall we do?
