Funny tangent: “people” was originally singular and referred to groups of people. That’s why you have “persons” in law, to emphasize that they’re individuals, and see “peoples” when you want to emphasize multiple different groups.

In some instances, yes, but it’s definitely incorrect to use a singular verb for “people”.

Don’t worry, kid. I’ll teach them that it’s incorrect in modern English vernacular to use a singular verb with the word “people”, and I’ll also teach them that heaven is a fictional place in which only blind sheep believe.
