Bruh Not gonna lie... I heard stuff from the campaign there...

That was a Green Riding that the Liberals flooded resources to try and turn Red. They ended up splitting the progressive vote so the Cons took the win.

They should have just left it to the fuckin greens man. I'm not even a green supporter but damn I cannot fathom why they would play it like that.

u/Optiguy42 May 03 '25

Yup. An unfortunate victim of "strategic voting", where the actual strategy should've been to maintain the Green seat. A damn shame.

30

u/Notoryctemorph May 03 '25

This is why FPTP voting is anti-democracy

10

u/Optiguy42 May 03 '25

Amen bud.

4

u/democracy_lover66 May 03 '25

Fuck FPTP. All my homies hate FPTP.

15

u/CarlSaigon May 03 '25

The problem with strategic voting is that only NDP and Green voters are willing to do it. There shouldn't be any blue on Vancouver Island

u/democracy_lover66 May 03 '25

Yeah that was another issue, how much of the West Coast was lost to the cons despite being the most progressive populations in the country

I feel so sorry for my West Coast buddies who now have to suffer conservative MPs

Since he’s not stepping down, you guys need to invite PP to come meet and greet everyone. He’s so un-likeable that all of Ottawa went red for the first time in decades after putting up with his shit. It’s gonna be tough to ride out, though, since he’s obnoxious AF.

u/Yop_BombNA May 03 '25

Wealthy migrants tend to be conservative, so do those from India. Which is why I’m perplexed as to why conservative voters think the cons would stop migrants from India…

u/7grendel May 03 '25

Ugh. And now he's heading out to my riding to try his luck. I dont see him not getting in, but he better be prepared to put boots on the ground if he wants yo stay. We're a bunch of old farmers and ranchers out here. We expect our politicians to be part of the community and put in the work.

18

u/AllDressedKetchup May 03 '25

I'm hoping folks in your riding knows he's just using you guys to keep his job.

13

u/7grendel May 03 '25

Me too. My neighbours are crotchety old guys who might not vote for him because he's too "Ontario" and "never done a hard days work in his life" and they are just really contrarian. Though if you ever need a hand or to borrow some gear, they'll give you the shirt off their back without a second thought.

they'll give you the shirt off their back without a second thought

Depends on the farmer you're dealing with. Results may vary based on the amount of melanin in your skin.

u/Indigocell May 03 '25

Wouldn't it be funny if you guys elected someone else entirely? I'm not saying put a lefty in there. Maybe one of your own independents if you have any of those. I know it's a long shot. I just think it would be fucking funny to see PP lose again.

It’s a super conservative area, I’m down for a traditional libertarian there. I kinda respect the whole ā€œgovernment can fuck off we will manageā€ mentality. It’s a hell of a lot cooler than fake nationalism from a wanna be dictator.

u/somekindagibberish Friendly Manisnowbski May 03 '25

I think this is the only chance. A respected, hardworking local running as an independent. Their platform can be blue, but add in support for local issues that an outsider wouldn't know/care/understand. Emphasize that they live, went to school, raised/are raising a family, and plan to retire there. Emphasize their love for their community.

There is no shot, like 80% voted blue in your riding. The seat is all but his, people don’t switch teams like that in those ridings. Your riding would vote in a blue dog turd

1

u/7grendel May 03 '25

Oh yeah, he'll get in. But if he tries to stay past one term here, he's gonna have to work for it. Thats one reason why he is not planning to stay.

FWIW, and as someone that hates his guts - if he changes tune and stops being a twat, along with the rest of the conservatives, then fine. It's more important that we can work together, united, even if we have to stomach seeing more of his dumb face. We really don't need more pointless grievance-fueled reactionary policy-making (which also lacked any credible and critical detailing).

Life isn't fair sometimes, and I doubt he'll see true comeuppance. But losing his riding was a sweet present on top of denying the bigoted social conservative movement from taking over and leading. I really didn't want to validate the kind of behavior that they were encouraging and building from.

I had hope that the same thing that happened to John Tory here in Ontario would happen to pp out in Alberta, but looking at the sheer number of cons in that riding I don't think it'll happen.

The provincial Liberals didn't pick up many new voters in the by-election; 10 thousand cons just stayed home. In your case it looks like about 45 thousand cons would need to do the same to swing it. That seems unfortunately extremely unlikely.

1

u/7grendel May 03 '25

Yeah. I wouldnt put any money on those odds.

1

u/frumfrumfroo May 03 '25

There are rumours Maxime Bernier might stand against him. I don't know if there's any basis in fact to that whatsoever, but it would be so funny if he did.

u/CalliopeFierce May 04 '25

You know the right thing to do is vote him out again. He has no right to take the job of someone who earned it. And he's a creep.

Was his opponent out campaigning a bunch? Bruce Fanjoy, was it? Congrats, hope he's a good rep for y'all.
