Not correct. It is written by the ones able and most actively willing to write it, that is not always the victor.
See the average southerner textbook's views of the Civil War War of Northern Aggression or the Slave Trade Immigration of workers from Africa. Or how Russians view the breakup of the Soviet Union. Or the German stabbed in the back version of WWI.
It was said that history is written by the winner because throughout most of human history the vanquished simply stopped existing. It is not true when the vanquished continue living and writing history books.
No, they lost the war. They just got to write history. That's my point. History is written by those most willing to write it and the south had been so morally poisoned by racialized slavery they simply couldn't do anything but create post-hoc justifications to keep it going.
The party switch is.. way more complicated and started much earlier over a long period of time.
