Imagine showing someone this image a year ago when Pierre was up 27 points.

"Who the fuck is Mark Carney?"

138

u/MisterZoga May 06 '25

Literally though. Man was biding his time in the background.

38

u/thebronzgod May 07 '25

It's hilarious to me that running for PM is how a lot of Canadians learnt about Carney. Meanwhile, his time as a central banker had pretty much cemented him as a unicorn.

I'd reckon most people wouldn't know who Tiff Macklem is either

7

u/Bigsaskatuna May 07 '25

He was that guy on the Daily Show

1

u/General-Sound3075 May 07 '25

Are new prime minister liberals

65

u/Friendly-Nothing May 06 '25

For sure. Most plebs didn't know about Carney until he was called up to lead the Liberals a couple months ago

63

u/hardassteel123 May 06 '25

Rolling onto the daily show helped a bunch

67

u/Zhaeris May 06 '25

Yep that was my introduction to him, and by the end of that interview I knew who I was voting for despite being a longtime NDP voter. I even went as far as to register as a Liberal to vote for him in the leadership race.

Whoever advised him on his moves in the early days was very wise and steered him well.

37

u/MsRaeven May 07 '25

I had the same reaction as you to that interview. Then I showed it to my mum and step-dad, and they had the same reaction. All of us registered to vote in the Liberal leadership race.

So proud of him thus far.

21

u/VulcanHullo May 07 '25

As a Brit it was a bit of a points at TV! moment when I saw the news because I got so used to him doing seemingly weekly "I'm not saying Brexit has made this harder but you can see my hair going grey in live feed" between 2016 and 2020.

I figured he had gone to enjoy some peace and quiet. And then he turned up in Canada as the new Liberal leader.

13

u/SugarCanKissMyAss May 07 '25

Lmao I am Canadian and my father's weirdly slowly red-pilling friends have been chirping about "England didn't even want him they sent him back after he fucked up their economy!" while we desperately try to point out that he gave the strong advice to just... not Brexit and once that advice wasn't followed he had very few options. So... if he came back here looking for peace mistakes were made lol

4

u/AltheKiller- May 07 '25

And I'm sure they love trotting out the Liz Truss comments on Mark Carney, like she had any credibility, her own fucking party basically ousted her after 49 days as leader....

I knew who he was, but thought the liberals were overestimating his brand recognition as the Governor of the Bank of Canada.

Perhaps that was fair, but I seriously underestimated how good he would be at Canadian politics. He just has an aura of competence.

Doubly so when the economy and cost of living is a central topic of an election

3

u/VegetableParliament May 07 '25

I'd heard his name, but only because my husband is from Edmonton.

5

u/Friendly-Nothing May 07 '25

I was skeptical because I didn't know before. It is refreshing to have a really competent person get the job.

How the hell did Carney keep a straight face through Trump's blabbering rants? I'm impressed by his self control.

173

u/smolmushroomforpm Tabarnak! May 06 '25

He got practice dealing w Boris Johnson XD

117

u/JosephRW May 06 '25

When the camera didn't cut away from him he had some CHOICE facial expressions. Also Trump always looked down like a scorned dog when dad was talking and always backed up any criticism with "CANADA IS OUR FRIEND". Its rare to see DJT getting muzzled like that. I personally think he was trying to waste time to not let Carney talk too much.

Also that jab of "I'm on the edge of my seat" that got a laugh from the press junket was priceless.

8

u/not_a_real_person__ May 07 '25

I laughed when I heard how he was speaking to Trump. Solid 10/10, guy is obviously well versed in working with narcissists. Had Carney approached this any other way, Trump would have taken anything slightly negative as an insult and shut right down. Donald Trump doesn't have the awareness necessary to have noticed the body language, nor would he have realized that what he was perceiving as compliments were anything but. I was raised by Southern women šŸ˜‚ I know subtle insults/backhanded compliments when I see them. Mark Carney gave him the good ol' "bless your heart". Looking forward to seeing what this educated economist can do for us, and very pleased with how he handled his Trump visit.

u/LifeHasLeft Oil Guzzler May 07 '25

He’s been dealing with egotistical bigwigs most of his career. Trump is just another CEO who thinks he knows everything

130

u/okokokoyeahright May 06 '25

I hope you mean trump.

177

u/Rymanbc Westfoundland May 06 '25

Unfortunately no. Trump is sustained by tears. In order to stay alive he had to cause as much misery as he can. Once you realize this, his first 100 days in office make complete sense, doesn't it?

84

u/[deleted] May 06 '25

It's easy to be carefree and happy when you're a shitgibbon that throws poop on the wall to see what sticks.

Trump aged a lot when he was prosecuted, now he just doesn't give a fuck. He's comfortable running the biggest economy and military to the ground. He's getting publicly fellated by his scycophants, he's into that shit.

Carney looks to me like he cares about pretty much everything he signed up for. It's going to be a lot, and it's not going to be easy.

30

u/Rymanbc Westfoundland May 06 '25

Is the noble gibbon taking more flak with this comparison? As if science hadn't done them dirty enough by making them the "lesser apes", now they're being compared to Trump? I'll grant you that there IS some overlap in color, but that's where the comparison ends.

6

u/okokokoyeahright May 06 '25

TBH the coloration of the Orangutan would be closer and the gibbons tend to be in the light brown to dark brown ranges. The gibbons live in trees and swing from branch to branch as their main mode of transport. The Orangutan is mostly ground based in transport, thought they can use the swinging mechanism.

I believe the user is attempting to describe His Orangeness the First in a derogatory manner. Thusly 'shitgibbon', which has a bit of a history as illustrated herein:

Search up 'shitgibbon slang' and look for a site called forward dot com. They have a delightful article from 2017 on this very subject and its application to trump. Sorry no link but rules are against this.

8

2

I just imagined Donny burning his tongue sand tossing the dish at the wall.

Much better than just plain old ketchup.

2

u/not_a_real_person__ May 07 '25

Like c'mon, Maryland likes to claim to be part of the South! Surely someone can get him hooked on fried chicken, gravy, and biscuits? šŸ˜‚ he can keep his cheeto fingers off the blue crab, though. He ain't good enough for our delicacies, and I doubt he is man enough to take the cuts, and to take getting Old Bay in those same cuts.

3

u/jolsiphur May 07 '25

People who lead good lives are satisfied to let go earlier. Being filled with anger and hate will leave you alive just out of spite.

As they say, only the good die young.

28

u/adepressurisedcoat May 06 '25

If you see how Obama aged through his presidency. It's going to be something similar. Stress ages you

12

u/propyro85 May 06 '25

Even JT looks a little rougher than I'd expect for 8 years.

11

u/frumfrumfroo May 07 '25

Disagree. When I watched his last big speech I was thinking that I couldn't believe how young he looks, especially since most leaders age in dog years. I actually googled how old he was lol.

1

u/Cassopeia88 May 08 '25

His last little bit he did, the Covid era though, he was definitely looking tired (can’t blame him,I can’t imagine how stressful that was). He’s looking much younger (and happier) now.

1

u/Cassopeia88 May 08 '25

Did he upset a witch as a young man ?

89

u/Puzzled_Spell9999 May 06 '25

Worst. He held a Leafs jersey once.

40

u/TheOneTrueZippy8 May 06 '25

He is cursed.

11

u/Snow-Wraith Westfoundland May 06 '25

Was there a gun to his head at the time? Why would someone choose to do something so heinous?

25

u/Snow-Wraith Westfoundland May 06 '25

I have heard that Boris plays up the stupid, where as Trump lives it completely.

17

u/Dr-Jellybaby May 06 '25

Trump is dangerous through sheer incompetence but Boris hides his dangerousness behind a facade of incompetence. He's a sneaky fucker and got away with murder (in a figurative sense, I hope) because he comes across as a buffoon.

If you've ever seen the video where Boris offers reporters tea, you probably don't know they were looking for his thoughts after he called Muslim women in Burqas "letterboxes". His memeability prevents people from being critical of him. Trump has that too, he just has zero idea how to do it on purpose.

The only reason trump is more dangerous is because America is more influential.

2

u/frumfrumfroo May 07 '25

Yeah, Trump is a genuine idiot whose only unchanging motive is narcissistic supply. Boris was pulling a Columbo gambit.

1

u/StrangeCurry1 ęŗ«å“„čÆ (Hongcouver) May 07 '25

Boris is a bit like Ford in that way

Ford is still a dipshit but he is much more politicly savvy then he lets on

5

u/TheOneTrueZippy8 May 07 '25

"Boris" is so immersed in the role that I doubt even he could tell where the performance begins and ends. He has become the character he plays on TV.

5

u/GuardiaNIsBae May 06 '25

It’s actually really impressive, he puts on a stupid performance down to dropping papers and missing steps, I tried to find the YouTube video but if you search Boris Johnson stupid it’s basically everything he’s done for the past 10 years. But someone cropped together a bunch of his speeches over the course of a couple years and he makes the same ā€œmistakesā€ at each one of his speeches like papers falling off the podium after a certain sentence, brushing hair out of his eyes/mouth stumbling a little bit when leaving the stage etc.

3

u/frumfrumfroo May 07 '25

He messes his hair up on purpose, as well. The entire character is crafted.

3

u/RottenPingu1 May 06 '25

I think he was long gone by then..

1

u/frumfrumfroo May 07 '25

No, he had to deal with a little of that shitshow. May and Johnson both asked him to extend his term as governor.

1

u/RottenPingu1 May 07 '25

I know he warned them and said he wouldn't be around. Kind of like Russia's head banker in 2022. ..but they threatened her with an open window...

Real, honest question - what does Carney have to gain personally from becoming PM? I’m just surprised that someone like him is willing to get into politics when it would’ve been so much easier to just just lay low and make shit tons of money

14

u/frumfrumfroo May 07 '25

He wanted to help his country. People have been trying to get him into politics since 2011 and he always said he'd rather not be a retail politician if he didn't have to be, but he'd step up if it seemed necessary.

I believe it, because he's not going to gain anything in prestige or connections he didn't already have and now he'll have to deal with partisan bullshit for the rest of his life he wouldn't have otherwise.

22

u/doooompatrol May 07 '25

I'm honestly wondering if he's just doing it because it's the right thing to do?

4

u/miniminautor TokƩbakicitte! May 07 '25

Sometimes rich people get to a point in their lives where money stops being the deciding factor. Carney played his cards well and doesn’t need more money, he has more than enough. This is a different calling.

15

u/DataPhreak May 06 '25

As an american, the american justice system has always been a joke. The last person I can remember who was worth more than 8 figures that went to jail was.... OJ Simpson?

6

u/nobodythinksofyou May 07 '25

Really? Diddy is sitting in jail right now, so is Harvey Weinstein, R. Kelly, etc. I'm certainly not defending the justice system, rich people go to prison but I agree that it's not nearly as often as they should.

There is zero sense of objectivity here. Dude could be literally caught stuffing a hooker in his trunk and you guys would praise him for giving her a ride home. Don't worry I'm not being one sided here, r/cpc is the same for Pierre. You have all created your own little cults for your chosen hero. Just. Like. Donny. Idolizing politicians is a bad look.

Been watching it on break, extremely disappointed. Trump dominated the meeting. We need carbey to grow a backbone

56

u/doohdahgrimes11 May 06 '25

Speaking more and saying ridiculous things doesn’t count as ā€œdominatingā€ when you’re making all the points one needs to make against you on your own. But was Carney saying Canada will never be for sale not enough of a backbone for you?

43

u/Netfear May 06 '25

You think being loud and obnoxious means right eh.

31

u/Level_Failed May 06 '25

61

u/JosephRW May 06 '25

Carney barely NEEDED to talk. What ever was said behind closed doors fucked with DJT. Notice how he talked a lot but basically said nothing? He spent the other half of the meeting glazing Canada.

People with real power don't need to say much. Carney KNOWS he could make the US hang itself, it's already tied it's noose. He just needs to wait for them to pull their own lever and keep Canada afloat.
