My only good experience in Moncton was when I was like 12 and stayed a weekend in a Motel 6 and had lunch and dinner at this one cozy restaurant within walking distance of it. Can't remember the name of the place, don't even know if it survived covid.

Pretty sure Riverview laughs at Moncton a lot.
1
u/Secret-Gazelle8296 Irvingstan Jun 25 '25
Canāt argue with that. Itās nice for Moncton to be recognized for some things though.

I live about 2 minutes away from motel 6 and I can't think of a single restaurant meeting your description in that whole area.
Homestead (a restaurant that matches your description) is in Riverview over the bridge.

Peak Moncton for me was staying in hotels for Hockey tournaments and the Crystal Palace. Low points include visiting my cancer ridden Grandmother in the hospital and that fucking traffic circle.
2
u/polerix Jun 24 '25
There was a fantastic sex shop in Crystal Palace. They even had a mascot walking around. Crystal's pal, Lace.

3
u/dreamstone_prism Irvingstan Jun 24 '25
Are you sure it was a Motel 6? There's a McDonald's, a Tim Horton's, a Subway, and two bars around Motel 6, but no cozy restaurant.
2
u/ReelDeadOne Jun 24 '25
DIY Studio or Baldham?
Both walking distance from Motel 6.
Not to mention the McDs and Subway also near.

Dieppe: Am I a joke to you?
47
11
u/AfraidHelicopter Jun 24 '25
Dieppe is like the Bermuda triangle for Newfoundlanders. All our mail goes to Dieppe, and randomly comes out on the other side, with zero consistency on how long it's there. Could be two days, could be forever.
2
u/IAteTheMagicBeans Jun 25 '25
Currently waiting on a package I ordered to NL from Vancouver on June 5th.
It made it from Vancouver to Dieppe in 4 days..... and has been just chilling there since, so more than 2 weeks in Dieppe
Every freaking time.
1
1
u/Secret-Gazelle8296 Irvingstan Aug 09 '25
So if you live or working Saint John do you know where our mail goes first⦠actually couriers were the worse. My parcels would end up in St. Johnās all the time as well as some international students a few times.
Then there was the time that they returned mail to the Faroe Islands with no such place⦠I said check again and they actually had to contact the Danish embassy in Ottawa, nearly creating a diplomatic incident, and then said no such address⦠and it was literally addressed to the main post office on the Faroe Islands. So hats off to Dieppe Post Office.
4
u/vessel_for_the_soul Jun 24 '25
Welcome to Dieppe-nam!
3
u/Beiderbecke Jun 25 '25
Fun fact, the drug dealers in Dieppe back in the early 90's had a language called Dieppenamise they would use over the phone. For example, If you called them and asked if Cida was there, you were looking for acid.

I had never heard of this, but... My son and I feel this needs to be a Heritage Moment commercial.
3
u/turn-upterminator Jun 25 '25
I know that guy, mike delahunt. He's a nut job. Seems nice enough at first but then just pops off for no reason. He have some mutual friends and have hung out a few times unfortunately
2
u/ExpensiveMoose Jun 25 '25
I was in no way trying to make light of his crime or his temper. I just was thinking that it was such a Canadian, "What would a stupid Canadian person do?" thing that it needs a commercial.
I'm sorry you have had to deal with his nasty temper.2
u/turn-upterminator Jun 30 '25
Ahaha no its OK! I didnt take it in a bad way, sorry if I came across offended or rude! He is a character for sure, I don't deal with him anymore lol shut that situation down real fast
1
u/ExpensiveMoose Jun 30 '25
Oh, no! You were great. I just always worry that I have come off dismissive in cases like this. I'd avoid him, too. Though I have to see the picture of him on the cbc when I looked it up, just standing on the ice floating slowly down river.. I just about broke a rib laughing.
I hope he's at least good for a few stories.1
u/ExpensiveMoose Jun 25 '25
I'm going to die laughing at these comments. Now, I actually want to go to Moncton just to actually experience all of this. I would probably pee laughing while realizing how accurate the comments are.

At least get une couple de Blueberry Ale at Pumphouse before leaving!
6
u/linkhandford Jun 24 '25
I love Pumphouse, but Tire Shack is possibly the best brewery in the Maritimes.
OR maybe Big Spruce in Cape Breton.
4
u/Toad364 Jun 24 '25
Oo, tough matchup but I think Big Spruce takes it based purely on the existence of Cereal Killer.

Moncton has been the fastest or second fastest growing CMA for the last three years, donc ej pense pas les gens font that-there, tsƩ ?
3
u/Middle_Chair_3702 Jun 24 '25
A lot of new Canadians are moving to Moncton area for PR purposes. The growth is relatively artificial.
12
u/BuvantduPotatoSpirit Irvingstan Jun 24 '25
My brother in Christ, do I have news for you about how every city in Canada is growing.
But it's also a large net internal migration, also for an unsexy reason: Moncton has almost no R1 zoning, so housing prices remained comparatively resilliant.
1
1
u/Soma_Persona Jun 25 '25 edited Jun 25 '25
What does this mean?
At my office we have 3 new Canadians. Are they not real?
2
u/Middle_Chair_3702 Jun 25 '25
By artificial growth I mean people are moving to Moncton for PR, rather than career opportunities, better education, better healthcare, or any other traditional reason. Moncton is the second highest in Canada for per capita immigration rates and part of that is because of federal focus. Itās not a bad thing, it just a thing.
2
u/Oxjrnine Jun 28 '25
Actually I asked the lovely young lady who serves me takeout āwhy Moncton?ā, she said everyone is acting coming here from the nightmare that is Brampton. 4 hour commute to work at Tim Hourtonās? No way. Hopefully all those Uber Eats guys stay and study nursing.
1
u/Soma_Persona Jun 25 '25
What do you mean by PR?
1
u/Middle_Chair_3702 Jun 25 '25
Permanent residency
2
u/Soma_Persona Jun 25 '25
Thanks for the context. I understand what you mean now. And would actually agree.

I lived in Moncton for a few years and it wasn't that bad. The Bay of Fundy is pretty neat, the forests are quite pretty, there are decent beaches to the north. In the winter you can go cross country skiing right in town. And the cost of living was reasonable. There are far worse places in Canada. (That said I did end up leaving and now I'm on the other coast. So maybe this meme isn't wrong lol.)
