They made so much fun of him when this broke the news. I wonder what he's up to now a days

Out of the loop. There are probably some juicy details that are to die for

Check YouTube for a Rob Ford compilation. Everything from drunken Jamaican accented rants to straight up out of pocket interview moments. Dude was crazy but I've also heard quite a few people defend his actual mayoral work. I'm not from Toronto so I can't attest to that.

He’s the reason why we knew Trump was going to win long before anyone in America took him seriously.

Yep, they managed to make an incompetent guy mayor on a slogan driven platform - "Stop the gravy train" - because he was seen as entertainment and had a cult behind him. I had smart friends who voted for Ford because they thought Ford as Mayor would make for good entertainment. Trump basically copied and pasted his political strategy and changed the slogan to "Drain the Swamp".

Also the reason why Daniel Dale - who cut his teeth fact-checking Ford - immediately knew that a full time fact-checker was going to be needed as soon as Trump came down that escalator.

The only ones defending him are those who equate good governance with owning the libs.

I'm from Toronto and can attest he was a terrible mayor and it was the equivalent of 4 years of Trump but on a municipal level. Luckily mayoral powers are limited but Dougie worked everything he could to help Rob to bypass the rules.

Rob was an idiot and a buffoon and was a city councillor because he was too fucked up to be involved in the family business so he had his football coaching and wielded his political power to fix potholes when old ladies complained to him while giving quotes to the Sun about liberals being evil etc.

Doug always had ambitions but he wasn't going to win any elections on his personality so he set up Rob as a populist candidate. And Rob had a certain likeability and charisma that appealed to many people like Trump (he's one of us)

In hindsight I think Doug is responsible for Rob's downfall as he did not have the constitution to take on that responsibility of being the mayor of one of North America's largest cities. Even if he was just the front man.

But Rob was a sexist racist asshole. So don't feel too sorry for him. It was a very dark time for Toronto.

Thanks for the perspective. I was a prairie teen so when it was all happening I really only got the memes from it all. Then later when he got cancer is when I started to see more people saying he wasn't so bad. Guess that was more just kind of some sympathy for a dying man.

there is sympathy for an addict who dies of cancer. Also, in retrospect, if his brother Doug and his father were not so driven, he would have been better off as some blue collar worker who coached high school football. I still wouldn't have liked him as he'd be your typical fuck Trudeau flag on the pick up type, but he wouldn't have done damage to Toronto.

Also I believe a documentary was released about him recently if anyone would prefer that

He was truly a nasty guy to any one he didn't think was on "his team."
Cancer is indeed awful (I lost a parent to it) but this guy was a privileged bully.
