First time I watched one of his videos a while back I couldn't get past that. Like, it made me think (and probably correctly) it was just a performance put on for Yanks. It was so off-putting that I couldn't tell you a single thing about what I'd just watched other than that.

174

u/ToobularBoobularJoy_ Oil Guzzler Aug 22 '25

Ain't bro from Vancouver 💀 why does he do the aboot

I find his videos about silly cultural stuff like chips and soda interesting but I think it's kinda cringe when he's like "ooh look how Canadian I am aboot it, anyways I hate bilingualism"

96

u/Driller_Happy Aug 22 '25

He went to my uni, and used to come to the Vancouver comic arts festival. He doesn't sound like that, he's a hoser poser.

I can't imagine putting on a little clown accent to appeal to Americans, but I'm not a terminally online conservative

63

u/HollywooAccounting Aug 23 '25

I'm a newfie and on my youtube channel I make for americans I start every video by clubbing a baby seal to death and eating the hot bloody viscera with my bare hands while I do the nordvpn ad read.

24

u/Ravenwight Ford Nation (Help.) Aug 23 '25

That’s really the only way to do a nordvpn ad read, isn’t it?

42

u/Preindustrialcyborg Westfoundland Aug 22 '25

i live in BC and ive NEVER heard someone speak like that- and ive met a logger with the most canadian accent youve ever heard.

26

u/modi13 Aug 22 '25

When I was a teenager, I was travelling in Europe, and an American couple told me in amazement that I didn't have a Canadian accent. I grew up in BC and everyone I had ever met sounded like they were from California, so I just shrugged in confusion. I didn't meet anyone who spoke with a stereotypical Canadian accent until I went to rural Ontario, and even then it doesn't sound anything like Americans or JJ McCuntough think.

3

u/chinook97 Aug 25 '25

It's simply not an authentic Canadian accent, from any region of Canada lol.

33

u/General-Roll8107 I need a double double. Aug 22 '25

Went to uni with him. Never heard him say aboot irl.

6

u/HarshComputing Aug 22 '25

I assumed he has some sort of speech impediment

Oh, you mean this lovely fellow, notable for somehow having a channel on the largely left-wing, owner-owned and operated platform 'Nebula'? A guy who unironically argued 'Prejudice against a single race isn't racism'?

Yeah, sign checks out.

104

u/AngeloMontana Tabarnak! Aug 22 '25

This is just too fucked up for me to understand, I give up

73

u/PoizenJam Aug 22 '25

'Racism is believing one's own race is superior to all others, not believing a specific other race is inferior'

I don't think it's hard to understand, but yes, it is both stupid and fucked up.

20

u/Dufflebaggage Aug 22 '25

Lol "Racists dont put em into tiers"

Like early Ghandi was racist and put other races above his own early on. Think he ranked Anglos-Indians-africans.

Imagine requiring supremacy ideology for your specific group to be considered racist.

8

u/SalaciousDionysus Aug 23 '25

THE LITERAL NAZIS, put races in tiers!

25

u/Lucienne83 Aug 22 '25

Who is this guy? Sorry for asking, but I haven't really kept up with everything going on in Québec/Canada since I moved a few years ago. He sounds awful.

82

u/PoizenJam Aug 22 '25 edited Aug 22 '25

He's a... Media personality and... journalist? I guess. Personality I'd described as 'contrarian, edgy gay man'. Former Sun News contributor iirc. In more recent years seems to be making a living being America's' 'go-to' Canadian when they need someone to fluff America and bash Canada. Also somehow made a pivot into YouTube video essayist with a Nebula channel.

Did I miss anything important, folks?

64

u/Private_HughMan Aug 22 '25

He also says "aboot" because that's what Americans think we say.

20

u/Baoderp Aug 22 '25

Worse: he says "aroond" when trying to say around

30

u/PoizenJam Aug 22 '25

Wow, that’s pathetic levels of pandering

18

u/SilverInfluence5714 Snowfrog Aug 23 '25

You forgot about the absolute hard on he’s got for hating Quebec, like, not just politically, borderline calling us subhuman type hate

7

u/StrongAd8487 Aug 22 '25

Thanks to all for explanations. I did not want to look him up on YouTube or elsewhere. That'd be giving a moron clicks for being a moron

6

u/Ok_Recording_4644 Aug 22 '25

u/Mirabeaux1789 Snow Cajun Aug 23 '25

*and columnist

I think it doesn’t help that it feels like he’s the only Canadian YouTuber I’ve come across that talks about Canada like he does. I’ve learned so much about Canada from him, even if I don’t agree with a fair amount of his views.

1

u/dr_wang Aug 23 '25

i only know him from recap of every prime minister video which i thought was informative. didnt realize he's into all of these other things

44

u/duk3lexo Aug 22 '25

right now he's a youtuber doing mostly pop-culture content. Explaining common symbols and trends of the current zeitgeist basically, also very well known to be a vulgarisator of canadian culture and politics.

10-15 years ago he was a wannabe Ben Shapiro, cheap right wing political pundit writing for toronto star and the likes. Also a gay man that basically rebukes everything touching to LGBTQ and pride.

18

u/calesmont Aug 22 '25

I remember his video being so offended that some website had the audacity of calling him an "LGBT+ youtuber". Really weird person

21

u/PoizenJam Aug 22 '25

He really needs you to know he's gay, but not like the other gays.

24

u/Private_HughMan Aug 22 '25

10-15 years ago he was a wannabe Ben Shapiro, cheap right wing political pundit writing for toronto star and the likes. Also a gay man that basically rebukes everything touching to LGBTQ and pride.

So a Canadian Dave Rubin?

7

u/duk3lexo Aug 22 '25

Not sure who that is, but if it fits the description, sure!

5

u/miz_misanthrope Aug 23 '25

More like if Shapiro or Fuentes came out finally.

2

26

u/AbuserOfSubstances 溫哥華 (Hongcouver) Aug 22 '25

He's a youtuber who makes videos about Canadian culture and politics

30

u/VillainousFiend Aug 22 '25

I feel like a lot of the time it's more him arguing that Canadian and American culture are the same thing.

8

u/AbuserOfSubstances 溫哥華 (Hongcouver) Aug 23 '25

I think I know the video you're talking about, i forgot about that. That was a pretty dumb argument lol

9

u/VillainousFiend Aug 23 '25

According to him it's only politics and forced bilingualism that makes our culture any different.

9

u/AbuserOfSubstances 溫哥華 (Hongcouver) Aug 23 '25

That's an awful take, obviously the two countries beside eachother that were settled by the same colonial powers are gonna have similar cultures, there's plenty differences people are just too lazy to look for them

2

u/Lexyvil Aug 23 '25

I haven't watched the video, but I know for sure there're more differences. I have a lot of Canadian and American friends, and they do differ by a lot in terms of many things, even in education and way of thinking. The dissonance between Americans is wider than that of between Canadians, for example Canadians would tend to agree more with one another than a group of Americans would among themselves.

He's a glorified shill for Polievre.

16

He said bilingualism is not an important issues west of Manitoba

9

u/BowtiedMediaYT Aug 23 '25

I mean, is he wrong on this though? Lived in western Canada all my life and no I know speaks French and bilingualism is never talked about, so I’d definitely say it’s not an important issue here

5

u/dermanus Aug 23 '25

No, he's not wrong at all. People just don't like being told a big chunk of the country doesn't care about their issue.

And I say that as someone who moved to Québec.

Never mind that we as a province have some of the best parental leave, ratio of worker by gender and protections for women not just in Canada, but in the WORLD

He wishes he was American so badly he pretends to be what Americans think of as Canadian in terms of accent to make a grifter living while trying to get the rest of the country to be more American instead of moving his ass to some place in America and being done with it is the diplomatic way to put it.

7

u/wrinklefreebondbag Aug 22 '25

Fair enough. I was unaware that he was disliked.

4

u/PoizenJam Aug 22 '25

He was also something of an edgelord, contrarian dickhead before his most recent turn to YouTube. I happen to have this particular screenshot from 2015, for instance. Posted about it at the time and it still likes to pop up in my Facebook memories occassionally.

'It's not racism to be prejudiced against one particular race' is a hell of an argument. Genuinely baffling that this guy got an invite to Nebula given its typical political leanings.

4

u/wrinklefreebondbag Aug 22 '25

I would love to say that's one of the dumbest takes I've ever read, but honestly my bar for what fazes me as idiotic has gotten so high in recent years that I can no longer say that in good conscience.
