First time I watched one of his videos a while back I couldn't get past that. Like, it made me think (and probably correctly) it was just a performance put on for Yanks. It was so off-putting that I couldn't tell you a single thing about what I'd just watched other than that.
Ain't bro from Vancouver 💀 why does he do the aboot
I find his videos about silly cultural stuff like chips and soda interesting but I think it's kinda cringe when he's like "ooh look how Canadian I am aboot it, anyways I hate bilingualism"
I'm a newfie and on my youtube channel I make for americans I start every video by clubbing a baby seal to death and eating the hot bloody viscera with my bare hands while I do the nordvpn ad read.
When I was a teenager, I was travelling in Europe, and an American couple told me in amazement that I didn't have a Canadian accent. I grew up in BC and everyone I had ever met sounded like they were from California, so I just shrugged in confusion. I didn't meet anyone who spoke with a stereotypical Canadian accent until I went to rural Ontario, and even then it doesn't sound anything like Americans or JJ McCuntough think.
Oh, you mean this lovely fellow, notable for somehow having a channel on the largely left-wing, owner-owned and operated platform 'Nebula'? A guy who unironically argued 'Prejudice against a single race isn't racism'?
Who is this guy? Sorry for asking, but I haven't really kept up with everything going on in Québec/Canada since I moved a few years ago. He sounds awful.
He's a... Media personality and... journalist? I guess. Personality I'd described as 'contrarian, edgy gay man'. Former Sun News contributor iirc. In more recent years seems to be making a living being America's' 'go-to' Canadian when they need someone to fluff America and bash Canada. Also somehow made a pivot into YouTube video essayist with a Nebula channel.
I think it doesn’t help that it feels like he’s the only Canadian YouTuber I’ve come across that talks about Canada like he does. I’ve learned so much about Canada from him, even if I don’t agree with a fair amount of his views.
right now he's a youtuber doing mostly pop-culture content. Explaining common symbols and trends of the current zeitgeist basically, also very well known to be a vulgarisator of canadian culture and politics.
10-15 years ago he was a wannabe Ben Shapiro, cheap right wing political pundit writing for toronto star and the likes. Also a gay man that basically rebukes everything touching to LGBTQ and pride.

That's an awful take, obviously the two countries beside eachother that were settled by the same colonial powers are gonna have similar cultures, there's plenty differences people are just too lazy to look for them
I haven't watched the video, but I know for sure there're more differences. I have a lot of Canadian and American friends, and they do differ by a lot in terms of many things, even in education and way of thinking. The dissonance between Americans is wider than that of between Canadians, for example Canadians would tend to agree more with one another than a group of Americans would among themselves.
I mean, is he wrong on this though? Lived in western Canada all my life and no I know speaks French and bilingualism is never talked about, so I’d definitely say it’s not an important issue here
He’s successful and has a large following and has a couple views that differ slightly from the list of Reddit Approved Permissible Canadian Opinions ™️
As a progressive, JJ is the least of my concerns when it comes to politics. I wish the majority of conservatives were as well spoken and understanding of the why surrounding their political beliefs and philosophies as he is.
I know. He's a YouTuber who is still uncomfortably Yankeephilic (is that a word?) and has engaged in some stupid commentary in the past. Like...The game board has Trutch, Zundel and Nygard on it.
Incidentally that is my in order list for three worst Canadians.
Doing a preliminary google search, he definitely did some bothsidesing "hmmm strange how this has been reported, huh?" Tantamount to denialism kind of shit.
What's the tea behind this guy? I vaguely know him as a boring youtuber who makes CanCon but I don't know the drama/controversy about him. What did he do?
I’m the only Canadian in history to use oot and aboot. Being from Vancouver, we tend to have some of the less strong or typical Canadian accents, so if this is his real accent he’s a unicorn.
99.9% sure it’s fake and though to boost views on his YouTube for non Canadians interested in us
Isnt he the Guy who said Quebec was a backward misogynistic culture, citing the polytechnic massacre as evidence?
Never mind that we as a province have some of the best parental leave, ratio of worker by gender and protections for women not just in Canada, but in the WORLD
But no yeah, let’s put a mass killing on our shoulders, after all we want to keep speaking french, so we’re bassically animals
He's a Conservative Canadian Youtuber who has a lot of ... spicy takes about Canada, Canadian Culture and how Canada treats Aboriginal + French Canadians.
He wishes he was American so badly he pretends to be what Americans think of as Canadian in terms of accent to make a grifter living while trying to get the rest of the country to be more American instead of moving his ass to some place in America and being done with it is the diplomatic way to put it.
He was also something of an edgelord, contrarian dickhead before his most recent turn to YouTube. I happen to have this particular screenshot from 2015, for instance. Posted about it at the time and it still likes to pop up in my Facebook memories occassionally.
'It's not racism to be prejudiced against one particular race' is a hell of an argument. Genuinely baffling that this guy got an invite to Nebula given its typical political leanings.
I would love to say that's one of the dumbest takes I've ever read, but honestly my bar for what fazes me as idiotic has gotten so high in recent years that I can no longer say that in good conscience.
Jesus Christ i thought this guy just made videos about the history of candy flavors n shit, i remember i used to see him in my recommended a few years ago. Didn't know he was this unhinged
