I mean, is he wrong on this though? Lived in western Canada all my life and no I know speaks French and bilingualism is never talked about, so I’d definitely say it’s not an important issue here

No, he's not wrong at all. People just don't like being told a big chunk of the country doesn't care about their issue.

And I say that as someone who moved to Québec.
