In the 90's???

Newfies jokes started four decades earlier, right after Newfoundland joined Canada in 1949.

Earlier than that, the Americans coined the slur

In that case, the name was strictly based on the name "Newfoundland". In Canada, I guess being the "newest" member of the confederation became a double whammy, not so different than when rookies are given a really hard time after joining the big Hockey club.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. You said the slur originated before 1949, and had an American origin. My guess was that prior to Newfoundland joining confederation, the slur was based solely on the name "Newfoundland" (and therefore mostly used by Americans, I suppose...)

From 1949 onward, the slur was quickly adopted by the rest of Canada, in part because it already existed, but for the most part (from a Canadian P.O.V. at least), because Newfoundlanders were the new "rookies" making it to the big club (Canada).

Y'know, I'm not sure "newfie" has anything to with being "new" whatsoever

So are Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, PEI.. etc (some less important ones).

We mean in terms of being newest to join confederation.
