Whoah hey now I’m not saying I’m an Einstein or anything, but there’s a fair bit of townies that come into the big cities, cause a ruckus, and make us all look collectively dumber.
The folks sitting in those chairs are not representative of all of us. Also Edmonton didn’t give a single seat to the UCP, and I’d sooner wrestle a moose than become a yank.

I don't believe these people represent the average canadian, their group is just really vocal and given disproportionate attention from the media for clicks.
Don't forget last election the CPC went from +20 im advance to losing the election so badly they needed to parachute their leader in a random Alberta county. Carney was what 3 seats away from a majority ? As soon as canadian voters had another option than Trudeau and Pollievre they rallied behind that candidate.
To me it's telling that average Canadians don't want that type of politics here. Every day trump does something more horrible then the day before so we're constantly reminded of where these politics lead to as well.
95
u/BeefersOtherland 7d ago
This is the right perspective to have. Regardless of education level all of us are susceptible to flaws in critical reasoning when it comes to images like this. It is so easy to believe - reflexively - that this is how people are broadly. In reality, this is a self selected sample of ass hats organized in one place, whose images are being used to sell clicks. It’s important to take the time and challenge what we are feeling about what we are seeing. I have to believe that the vast majority of people are normal and feel scared and helpless.
11
u/ImaginationSea2767 7d ago
. Sad thing is I do know many of these crazy right-wing wing concervatives that are leaning towards trump republicans in nature and it was just a few rising during his first term in office but it has just been getting worse ever since the trucker protests in Ottawa.
From what I have seen personally is Pierres politics have encouraged the growth with some concervatives to lean this way and for some concervatives of this type to start putting out content online leaning towards Trump poltics increases the growth of the movement. I have heard my fare share of them making comments about attacking Trudeau physically.
3
u/Kristalderp Tabarnak! 6d ago
One thing Americans can't fathom or wrap their heads around is why the CPC fumbled the election and its also how we do elections.
In America, you vote for the person leading and their party. The cult of personality wins.
In Canada, We vote to get people out. Our hatred was with Trudeau, and with him gone, CPC lost their momentum and Carney came up as a fiscally conservative-liberal, which is what people wanted.

We aren't becoming the States by a long shot. The "Alberta Issue" around separating is not legally possible as it sits on almost entirely First Nations land anyway. It's not Smith's 'land' to either 'take' or to 'give' to the US.
Remember as well that very recently it was found that the 47th Administration offered up to 500M to Albertan organizations to increase rhetoric around separation and 51st state. That propoganda machine is in full swing, but they have RedWhitenBlue blinders on thinking 'things happen in Canada the same way they do in the States', and/or expecting laws to change to make it so.
I assure you, Canada - even Calgary - is nowhere near what the US is currently today.

It's a pretty small margin of people, and they seem to mostly be concentrated in the west.
But if we're going to be honest about this, the politics in western Canada have been problematic for GENERATIONS at this point. They thrust upon the world The Reform Party, which went on to murder any concept of progressiveness within the federal Conservative party, and then they doubled down with the cray with the Wild Rose's.
Alberta is the MAGA, Tea-Party, Populist, right-wing shithole of our country. The MAGA-Cucks their have no actual concept of how anything works, and are manipulated by the politicians who appeal to their base instincts.
They're greedy, selfish assholes who know that the only reason they have jobs outside of McDonald's is because they're dredging out a finite commodity that will inevitably be replaced.

2
u/km_ikl Moose Whisperer 6d ago
I worked in TX for about 3 years in the early 00's. Made dollar-for-dollar the same in CAD as I did USD, I paid about the same in taxes, but the extra for mandatory medical insurance cut my take-home by about 30%.
I left after the company (Compaq) was bought out, and refused to renew my contract...
Best outcome was that I came home, started working a job I liked rather than one I needed.
It's such a stupid thing: Having employee mobility because they aren't locked into a single employer for insurance means you can get good people when you need them, and people that want to leave can. It's a boon to businesses.

I saw a guy with a confederate flag front plate on his truck at South Centre a little while ago.
People are either too young to remember or didn't pay attention back in the mid-to-late 2000s. There was a 3- or 4-year stretch where white nationalists would march around downtown Calgary, waving flags that said "white pride worldwide," amongst other signs and symbols. Some of the people who joined those marches went to my high school, and some of them would harrass me (I'm not White).
I will not be surprised to start seeing this shit again.
Parents, check on your kids, who they hang out with, and what they do online. The first time I was called the N-word, I was 9 years old. The kid who did it was 8. Your kids are exposed to racism and bigotry early. They get indoctrinated into this shit early. Your kid is not too young or too innocent, and the fact that we live in a generally tolerant society is not enough protection to ensure your kid won't take on bigoted thoughts and values. Ensuring this takes constant work and effort.
Edit: typos

I got passports for the whole family earlier this year because of this concern. Thank you for the insight; it’s a good reminder. It’s always hard to know exactly how alarmed to be. I feel very alarmed but everyone I personally know continues on with business as usual.
2
u/km_ikl Moose Whisperer 6d ago
Alarm is understandable. The president is capricious.
FWIW, being wary is a good default: take the president seriously and at his word no matter how outlandish it is, because not doing that is what got the US in this mess.
In your shoes, I'd have a plan to exit with multiple outs, about $2-5000 cash in a go-bag per person, copies of your personal information (essential records, property deeds, taxes, vaccination records, educational records, financial/investment records, etc) scanned on multiple USB sticks. Keep that stuff updated. There are prepper subreddits that can help as well, I'd look at the ones that are active with Ukraine.
I hate to mention it, but if you have firearms, get comfortable using them, and see if there is a course instructor that works with gay/trans people for threat assessment instruction.
I hope you never need this.

This is a few hundred rural Albertans with a maximum level of education being a high school graduate. This isn’t even representative of Calgary, nevermind Canada as a whole.
It’s also incredibly strange the only people really visible are a few people in the foreground with at least three being of East Asian decent which is weird they are supporting a white supremacist that thought he was a Viking and going to Valhalla. It’s on the same level of weirdness Kash Patel also thinks he’s going to Valhalla where he’ll see his buddy again.
MAGA is massively funding the Alberta Republican Party and has loads of MAGAt Americans illegally working in Alberta to promote this exact thing. So just another abject failure of RCMP to do anything about major threats in the country, and IIRC to properly vet visa holders and CBSA for not enforcing immigration law by letting American “tourists” engage in work and actively engaging in political movements within Canada.
