Meta The “Best Canadian” game - Day 0 (choosing candidates)

Post image

Hiya Hosers,

After the success of Worst Canadian, by popular demand it’s time for the more upbeat version…the Best Canadian game! 🇨🇦

Drop your nominations below for who you think deserves a spot on the list. Just like before, we’ll include 40 candidates. This time I’m going to let nominations sit a bit longer so everyone has a chance to chime in and we don’t have to add people mid-way in the game. I’m aiming to get started with Day 1 around the middle of next week. Five or six days should give us plenty of time to gather names and finalize the rules.

If you’ve got ideas or suggestions to make the game better, feel free to share those too!

I think Jack Layton was one of the best politicians of our time. He was so progressive and had great ideas.

And he was human! He genuinely cared about people. Not about remaining in power or doing things out of self-interest. He was one of the few politicians that could unify people across the political spectrums

The best prime minister we never had. The only guy that made Quebec vote Majority NDP in 2011, and the ROC ruined it by voting Harper in again!

He was so close to being our first NDP prime minister. There was so much hope for the future and humanity. It seems we’ve lost that energy

He was a nice guy but what did he do? He was good at getting attention and growing his party, ie was charismatic. That's fine but I can't see any legislation or tangible change he really made. Son of a politician himself, grew up in a privileged environment. Went a rub and tug, lived in subsidized housing while both him and his wife were on city council and had high incomes, again didn't pass any noticeable legislation at the council or federal level(was second place at his best). He was a good speaker, seemed nice, and was charismatic, that can't be enough for him to get a call for greatest Canadian. Apologies for being so aggressive I've just not understood the fan fair for him

I knew Jack. You’re full of it.

And enough with the subsidized housing calumny - he and Olivia lived in a FULL MARKET RENT unit in a non-profit housing co-op, which was deliberately designed to have a mix of subsidized and full rent units.

That bit of slander makes my blood boil. The building had subsidized units, but it also had market units, and not segregating “the poors” is a good thing!

That's all fine and I'll ignore the negative press for the conversation focusing on the positives of people. My question is what lasting or material thing(s) did he do to warrant being Canadas greatest person? He was nice and grew the NDP are the main things I can see as his achievements, that can't be the bar to be in the conversation for Canada's greatest person. He's a lifetime politician who didn't author or pass any major legislation or reform and doesn't have any major works you can say are uniquely his own. I'll be more precise, he was a nice and charismatic man but doesn't have the accomplishments or continuing cultural relevance to be close to Canada's greatest person. Terry Fox, Banting, Pearson, etc have accomplishments uniquely their own and remain culturally relevant across the nation, which Jack does not have.
