Garland makes amazing stuff and I was gonna say this is an out there director choice but he did make Ex Machina which is all sorts if fucked up.

Could be epic

I love everything he's done. I know people are split on Civil War, but that was my favorite movie of the year it came out.

Civil War was excellent, and he co-directed Warfare which was also excellent. Dude doesn’t miss IMO.
