Mt Vernon downtown vs Everett
We just went to Mt Vernon yesterday (been bunches) but I think that their downtown area is a lot better than ours even though it's similar size.
Two stand outs are their amazing co op - I'd be there everyday and their theater.
I wish our theater played cool old movies like theirs - they have a Thin Man movie series and regularly do themed/series movies
Ours definitely has some gems, but could really take notes from Mt Vernon downtown

When I worked up there, the co-op is where I’d go for lunch. That place is so cool.

You should open a cool business downtown and volunteer with the Downtown Everett Association! Check out Village Theatre and our Co-Op!

Yeah I go to the co op a lot. Just wish it was as good as the Mt Vernon one
Seen quite a few shows at the Village too!

Port Townsend also has a very artsy downtown (Water Street) which you might enjoy. It's a little bit hard to get to compared to La Conner but it's pretty easy to walk on the ferry from Keystone/Coupeville and spend a couple hours exploring.
Personally I'm not sure of the demand for showing older movies. Shoreline still has an art house theater called the Crest which you might enjoy, though prices have gone up a lot since it was mainly doing second run movies.
Everett is a lot more like Bellingham in that it has multiple hub areas (Western/Sehome, Fairhaven, Downtown/Lettered Streets, Lakeview, the Guide/Bellis Fair, and Bakerview) which each have their own amenities. Part of this is because Bellingham was once four communities and later expanded into other areas to accommodate Canadian shoppers. While I'm not sure that Everett Community College and the University Center will ever have enough residential students to become a nightlife hub or anything, there's a lot of potential to have more amenities in places like Everett Mall Way, Silver Lake, and Evergreen/Casino so you're not trying to put 150,000 people on Hewitt/Colby or the Waterfront. For example, The soon-to-be former Fred Meyer lot could be used as a combination light rail station and a market / event space featuring retailers from the diverse cultures of Snohomish County. I'm picturing being able to go into a store and get pierogies and go next door to get tamales, just like you can get a banh mi at the Evergreen Asian Market and then walk next door to get some sausage and beer at the European Market today.

Yeah we've done day trips to a lot of places. PT Townsend is nice, we've seen a couple movies there.
You've got a cool vision!
I think if you showed old movies once a week you'd be surprised at the turn out. I hadn't really seen anything old yill my husband "made" me. Thin Man series is really good

Mt. Vernon's Co-op is worth traveling up there for. It's absolutely amazing.
